? Warning fire inside ? 1 of 1 Odyssey RIP TriForce 3

Been awhile since my last putter project...this one takes the cake! It all started with the purchase of a minty Odyssey TriForce 3 off the BST. I knew instantly the black insert had to go...so I removed it and the tungsten flange via the screws behind the face. Decided to go with a torched finish on the head leaving the flange stock to give it a slight versa look. Then I sent the head off to SpryEvo for a custom aircraft grade aluminum deep milled face. He killed it as usual. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND! 

Once I got her back I started thinking of what I wanted to shaft her with...I wanted to go with a black shaft as it’s all the craze right now and I kinda like the look myself. But I wanted something unique and different. I wanted an Aldila RIP in this beauty!!! The hosel takes a .370 shaft so easy peezy just get a hybrid RIP off the bay right??? NOT!!!! I did the calculations and if you went that route, after butt trim to playing length you would chop some of the graphics off and the grip would cover the rest. 

The answer was to go with a .335 shaft, cut the tip off where it becomes .370 and butt trim the rest to playing length. Ended up with a playing length of 35.5” and every bit of those killer RIP graphics! One problem...shaft now weighs 45g!!! 

Went back to the drawing board to decide on my next steps. I can add tungsten powder and cork, a bunch of weights in the tip section, a load of lead tape or tungsten plugs to the head, etc... The head was at a comfortable 340g so I wanted another 10 in the shaft tip to bring it to 350g. The rest would need to be a mix of the grip and something else....I don’t like the look of the counter weights through the grip, and I didn’t want to pay up for a tour lock pro. So I made this...

I wanted a total overall club weight of between 515g and 530g. I needed 50 grams in the butt section and this was perfect...5 10 gram tip weights taped together with some packaging foam over the top to get the fit right. Stuck it in the butt and it was perfect. Installed a Lamkin deep etched grip on her last night and boom she’s ready for the course! This thing feels unreal smooth throughout the Stroke, I can’t wait to see how she performs. Total overall weight is right at 523.6g!

FWIW: There are a few graphite iron shafts that already have 120g (or more) of weight even after cutting to putter length and they already come in .355 or .370 depending on what you're looking at -- personally, I used an old Matrix Program 130 7.0 flex 8 iron shaft for a fun TP Mills Huey build and it turned out pretty awesome -- will post pics later!!

Looks killer though! Did you counter weight it in the butt/grip section???

I followed the formula of the stroke lab putter. The head weighs 350g and the grip weighs 77g. The shaft was around 44 grams cut so I added 30g more weight using 3 tip weights taped together. I placed them closer to the tip end to mimic the steel shafted section that a stroke lab putter would have. The Stroke Lab has a 40 gram grip and a 30 gram counterweight but since I used a 77g grip it matches.

Sounds like you nailed it...give it some time, it will feel odd at first but it has quickly become my favorite feeling putter

The balance feels nice but I think the shaft doesn't feel that great. It's somewhat dead and hollow feeling and I wonder if it's due to the RIP I used.

I will say I noticed you used the RIP Gamma and the OP used the Alpha.

 

Pretty sure the gamma was counterbalanced, but I cant remember. That could cause a feel issue when you cut that much at the tip.

I also noticed the walls of the Gamma were very thin in the tip area which could also be why it feels so hollow.

Could very well be the case...The walls of the Alpha at the .370 mark were very thick. Thick enough that I had no way of getting a tip weight in there.

Really like the black paint fill. Very nice. I just bought a Triforce 3 off Ebay for dirt cheap. Not as good shape as yours, but you inspired me to restore, torch it and install a new insert. Beautiful.

Would this work with any parallel .350 graphite iron shaft? I.E the RIP Iron Tour shaft.

In theory I guess it would work...you would have to figure out the diameter issue however. As in at what point along the shaft is it the size you need to fit the putter hosel. And after you find that, how much shaft is left and is it enough to use (34”, 35”, etc...)
