whats the strength of field for the olympics....or how does the field compare to other pga events. olympics would be likely a smaller, less skilled field and yet they give medals to second and third place. awkward. no other pga event do they celebrate a finish outside of winning the tournament.

 

hard to blame pga guys for skipping with the condensed schedule as it is. just make olympics golf an amateur event and i'd be eager to watch.

Quite frankly, I forgot Rose even won the Olympics. In fact, it wasn't until I watched Feherty talk to Stenson the other night, that I remembered Kuchar won the Bronze.

DJ, like most of them, probably don't want to be bothered with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with the Olympics. They like to show up on Tuesday, play a practice 9, do the same Wednesday and then play their tournaments.

And with this CoronaVirus thing, especially in the far east, I honestly can't say I blame him.

You're actually comparing winning the 1987 Canada Cup to winning the Gold medal in Ice Hockey for the 1980 Winter Olympics? There are 2 issues with Pebble, IMO: 1st and foremost, it's a Pro Am. I think most of the guys don't want to bother with it. Rory doesn't want to be in the group behind Larry the Cable Guy, I promise you that.

And 2nd, it's now wedged between San Diego and L.A. on the calendar. So Torrey Pines has kind of become the "First big" event of the year recently and then the Genesis 2 weeks later. And of course, right after that is a WGC Event, so if someone wanted to play Pebble, you're looking at 4 weeks straight. Which goes back to your point of the schedule just being brutal.

If given the chance, I would shoot for the Olympic medal if it means only playing an extra week before the playoffs. Imagine if you won a gold medal. I would sport that bling every day as an old man.

Honestly, call me old fashioned but I thinks it's a disgrace that the Olympics are being undermined by a solid portion of the biggest stars in golf. Yeah I understand they've got extremely busy schedules that have been mapped out for x amount of months, but IMO participating in the Olympics is one of the highest honors an athlete can have. Don't sit here and tell me you've never pictured what it'd be like to hold an Olympic gold medal. With what happened with the course in Brazil (last I heard it was closed down?? not sure on the validity of that) and the wavering support from the best in the world I wouldn't be surprised if they end up yanking golf from the Olympics all together.

 

Long story short I enjoyed watching in Rio and wish the event got a bit more support and enthusiasm from the golf world.

I think DJ has made it pretty clear that his golf priority is cashing cheques, and I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. Olympic golf clearly doesn’t fit into that priority.

I still believe that an Olympic Gold medalist has more clout in the sporting world than 1x major winner. It’s why I believe Tiger will make a run at making and winning at the Olympics at the expense of the FedEx Cup, because he cares about trophies more than money (he has a lot of both).

Say what you want about the IOC, but Olympic gold still earns you lifelong and beyond respect in the sporting world.

I have a hard time believing Tiger will forfeit chances to win #83 (84, 85, 86...) in the FedEx Playoffs and another FedEx Cup. But time will possibly prove me wrong on that one. Just can't see him with the limited amount of tournaments left to put more stress on his body down the stretch of another season and the Ryder Cup.

 

IMHO, when they asked Tiger about it I think he knew unless people back out, he probably won't qualify so he was able to leave the door appearing slightly open to the media. It'd be a bad look right away if he said no, Tiger knowing that and always being pretty well calculated knew he was around 6-7th American and would have work to do with Xander and Bryson right behind him, his chances are low. So he was able to embellish a little with his answer.

I don’t know Tiger personally, but I’m willing to bet that he’d skip the Ryder Cup if he didn’t get such horrible negative press for doing it.

With the rare mindset that he has, that he shares with few sporting greats, you just know he wants Olympic Gold. He’s won absolutely everything else. It would be like Hogan making the trek to Carnoustie to win his one and only appearance in the Open Championship.

Well, OP has been reluctant to mention anything exept drug testing, so Imma say he thinks Tiger wants to avoid drug testing. He has no problem poking DJ but no guts to poke the Tiger. weird.

 

 

That said, I'm not embarrassed to say that I still like the Olympics. Also I don't really give a hoot about professional athletes in them. I want to see the best athletes a country has to offer. If your country's best athletes happen to be professional athletes then so be it.
