What don’t you like about your current irons besides chunky. What are you expecting out of a new set? More distance? Tighter dispersion? What shafts are in your current set? How is the ball flight on your current irons? You haven’t given enough info to really make recommendations.

I do best with GI irons with lighter weight shafts (sub-100 gram) for several years. And, rough demo day fittings show the same thing.

Ping i200 landed in the inaugural Players Distance category in the 2018 GD Hot List.

That said, I had hit the Ping i200 irons at two different demo days. With the AWT 2.0 R-flex shafts, I got solid hits and distance. The longer irons shafts of the AWT are lighter than the shorter ones, and I got good launch down to the 4i.

790's were on my list but I did finally go with the Ping i500's based on my fitting. Much thinner topline and minimal offset. I was currently playing Pings and the feel was normal for me. Played a par 3 with them so far and I'm getting used to them. Can't blame the clubs, as most shots were off the toe.

So my $.02 is an example of one hole. 196 yards slight uphill. This used to be a hybrid shot for me. I went with the 5i just to see what I could do. My old 5i (Ping i15) was 175. Caught the ball so far on the toe I don't even think I got any groves. Ball wound up 10 yards short left of the green. Dropped a second ball and caught it toe, but at least on the groves. It went 5 yards left of the green and caught a tree branch. This ball was just passed the green, left. So... 20+ yards off a toe shot and only about 10 yards to the left.

With all that, I vote anyone looking for players distance try the i500s.

This is my experience too. I have not found any club of the same lofts that are longer than the P790's and I have hit a few. However, distance control if difficult. I had a tricky shot onto a green surrounded by water and other trouble this weekend. Was playing around 175 and my 7i carry is around 180 in the summer with this club. bear in mind it was 6/7 degree C outside and the ball is not travelling as far. From the fairway my shot completely airmailed the green into OOB, carrying at least 185 and probably closer to 190. In fairness I believe this is an issue with all distance irons though, which is why I think they are better suited in the longer irons.

Epon has some options that would fit at all. Cannot tell you how much I love mine. I play AF-703 which many on here would consider shovels, but amazing feel, workability and much better profile than a normal SGI iron.

I can't believe no one has mentioned these.......check out the Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF2 forged irons. Great looking, feel, forgiveness, and distance that's consistent. They have a medium top line, modest offset, and average blade length. Wide choice of shafts. And read online reviews; you won't find a negative one. All reviewers rave about them; they're a real sleeper. I recently purchased a set and I love them. And I have to say; they look better in person than in the photos!

I blind ordered Mizuno 919 Hot Metal Pros last year and really like the overall look, feel and forgiveness. But I’ve only played a couple of rounds with them and am wondering if my shaft choice of Modus 105 is too light for me. I played C-Taper Lite 110 S in my previous couple of sets. I am a big Mizuno iron fan, as many on here are, and recommend checking them out. I haven’t been on here much the last few months and the convo seems to have shifted more toward the HMB, and I even am seeing more mentions of the 919 Forged than I recall last year. They all have decent forgiveness and could be a potential fit for you.

I hit a friend’s P790 with C-Taper 120 last year and wasn’t a huge fan. Didn’t love them, didn’t hate them. But many people do love them. I’ve just never been a big TM guy.

The best thing you could do is go to a good fitter if there’s one in your area. You might be surprised what you get fit into. I went to Club Champion in 2014 and was quite surprised at what worked and what didn’t.

I think the PING i210's are the probably the best all around irons out there for looks, feel, performance, custom availability and price. They are not too big, not too small, not crazy low spin rocket launchers, you can get the lofts in a couple different configurations, they have put a ton of conscious thought into gapping between clubs. The only thing is that maybe the long irons have too much visual offset for some tastes and the soles might be a bit wide for some swings. I would probably get a set if there weren't rumors of something new from PING coming in a few months.

There are so many good sets out there in this category these days, you really can't go wrong with a good fitting. If you really have a brand preference or really like the look of something you can probably get it built into a good set for you.

I know that no Humana spokesperson would play with 15 clubs so which of the two utility long irons do you play, chisag?

I can't imagine having five longer-than-a-four-iron clubs in the bag, but maybe you're a real bomber!

I like the P790's. They are currently in play for me until my ball-striking gets better.

... I am also not a doctor but play one on TV so no Coronavirus questions please. The GAPR is new so I haven't played it yet and I will need to see how it compares to my UDi 2 iron that I love using off the tee but could use a little more height from the fairway. I am hoping the GAPR is the best of both worlds (if that exists) I also carry 2 fairway woods here in the Chicago burbs with the soft conditions, but I dial down my 5 wood to 17* and exclusively play it in Phoenix because I get more roll as well as a little more carry. In Orlando it depends on what course I am playing. So the top of my bag is fluid depending on location and conditions.

My memorable TV appearance was on the news, decades ago, and my parents were none too pleased about it.

I behave much better now in my dotage, thankfully.

Titleist T100s irons are reasonably playable for a variety of skill levels, I would opine, although I do not represent myself as an expert.

They're my third consecutive set of Titleist irons, but if Spalding ever returns to golf...

  • 3 months later...

Definitely my category right here playing to a 10index. I have 3 sets, 2 of which I go back and forth from and thats really my only problem. I have been gaming my P790 4-PW in my travel bag and the Mizuno 919F weekly for home rounds and really enjoy both. They are very similar in distance and trajectory with the shafts I have selected, with no clear winner. Thats the only issue here, I can't settle on one and only one LOL

In the end I would give a slight preference to the 919F for the sound and feedback but its really so minimal as the P790 feels great too. I do like the P790 when I play courses that are wet and a little mushy due to the seemingly higher bounce and wider sole, but living in AZ thats really never a problem. Almost every lie is tight which does push me to favor the 919F and the sharper/less width in the sole.
