2019 Taylor Made P790 Long Term Reviews??

Hello All,

Im looking to make the move to bigger irons. I've gotten older, don't practice have lots of kids ... I want to make the move.

Problem is I'm a low spin player. But I almost dont' care about the numbers. I love the look of the P790. I hit them once and yes they were long but I didn't get the numbers.

 

Anyone have a long term review of the new 790s?

I do not think these are the answer to someone looking for an "easy to hit" iron SGI type setup. While they are quite large they are not going to mask a bad swing as much as more game improvement irons will. Couple that with the low spin and potential distance and that could be disaster. Something like the T300 or M5 iron would be more what someone looking to cover up bad contact would want. The P790 is still best handled by someone swinging pretty well, they help preserve ball speed on slight mishits. Not to say they won't work for you, but that's my opinion. I have been playing them for a year and when my swing is on they are great, almost too long... when its off there is no extra help.

Going to echo what DrScott266 mentions above - if you are a low spin player I think there is a higher likelihood that this isn't a good fit. I have been playing the P790s for many of the same reasons you mention (older, practice, kids...) - but high spin was one of the issues they have really helped address. I love them but think there are other options out there that offer some of the same benefits - forgiveness, distance, player iron looks that don't spin low. Have heard good things on the Cobra irons....

I totally agree with Drscott266 is saying, These are for better players that want some technology, these are not for people hoping technology helps them with bad swings.

Now after that they are great irons and with proper fitting with correct shafts and gapping done they are great!

I have a set from 2017 with Recoil shafts and love them. I just can't imagine that the 2019 version of the P790 are that much better and worth an upgrade

I remember a fitting video that stated even with the stronger lofts, the newer clubs will launch the ball higher and with less spin. This is supposed to result in a steeper angle of descent and less roll out.

 

For those of you that have been hitting the P790's have you found this to be true? example: do you hit the lower lofted 7 iron higher than your previous 7 iron? Does it roll out any less?

I had the original P790's and now have the newer version. The important thing is to get fit for the correct shaft to make sure your spin numbers aren't too low. I got fit with Modus 105 stiff and they launch nice and high with a steeper descent angle and have no problems stopping them on the greens.

I came from Hogan blades (4 seasons) and the 790's aren't that big. They are bigger, but not that much- I wanted to make the move to the distance players iron.

 

I got fitted and went head to head with all the distance players irons Cobra/Titleist/PXG/Ping and these came out on top. Shafting is paramount to any club you get.

 

I'm skewed coming from blades so these are more forgiving than blades obviously.

 

I play 1,2 or sometimes 3 times every week and they have been great performers and consistent to my yardages- If anything a tad bit longer on excellent strikes -

 

Coming from blades where you can move them left or right pretty much- These are pretty straight- hard to move for me at least- Easy to elevate if needed or knock down

 

I like them - exactly what I was looking for and they are great performers.
