Combo set

For this golf year I would like to try a combo set of irons. I play 5-PW and am thinking of 5,,6,7 cavity and 8,9,PW blades. What brand is best for this? Callaway, Titleist or Mizuno? If anyone is gaming a similar set up why did you chose your particular brand?

Callaway Mavrik Max 10.5, set at 9.5 stock R-flex
Taylormade M2 3 wood R-flex stock shaft.
Tour Edge Exotic EX9 hybrids, 2 and 5 Recoil R-flex shaft.
Taylormade P790 5-PW Modus 105 R-flex shafts
Titleist Vokey 50,54 and 58 wedges
Odyssey 2 ball.

Between those three, I can't give you a quick response. But the transitional club slot - in yours that 7 to 8 iron, has to not face a huge loft gap.

I've only played Mizuno and Callaway in recent times of your options. You may need to look at weakening the lofts of the cavities in the long irons to blend better into blades.

I'm also going to get a combo set and it will likely be Callaway. I like the Mav Pro line for a possible 4-7, then the 8-PW in X-Forged. To do so, I should go 2 deg. weak on Mav Pro, but may just go 1 deg weak to keep their total distance advantage at the top and dump my annoying 25 deg. hybrid in favor of a four iron again. Maybe I'll go 2 weak on the 6/7, just 1 on the 4/5.

The next test in a combo set is how they blend in looks. Is the topline/offset/blade size & shape a good work between the two lines? Without trials or even store rack browsing, you could also look at the many Pros WITB and find some possible combo sets being played today that do work. For sure, the Pros have their lofts/lies blended in well by the OEM fitters that they have easy access to.

Edit:

Researched specs @ Titleist and I like the blend from a T100 into a 620CB possibly better than the Cally set above I had proposed for me. My bottom line is getting graphite shafts in all my irons this season due to injury wear on older body!

Titleist probably has the most options for combo'ing a set. Something like MB, CB, TMB would appeal to me.

That being said I combo'd PING blueprints but I'm not sure if the i500 is going to work as my 4i. I am considering throwing a TMB in as my 4iron if it gaps. That iron is by far my favorite long iron replacement.

I'm playing an older mixed mizuno set. Their fli-hi's 3-5, JPX 900 tour's in 6-9, then T-7 46°-58°. Gaps are fairly consistent with the exception of the 5 to 6 iron. That is usually in the 15-20 yard range. Most the course I play I don't need a 180-190 yard shot so there's so real downside to the larger gap. Could easily be fixed by adjusting lofts if needed though.

In my opinion Mizuno lends its self pretty well to blending sets. Just focus on gaps in your fitting and adjust lofts if needed.

I would think the i500 would work fine, however you might need to do something like get the i500 5i. It's the same length as the Blueprint 4i and only a degree weaker. You could easily bend it a degree stronger if you needed to for gaps. As long as you can get past the OCD of having two 5i's in the bag.

I'm running 4-7 MP64 then 8-PW MP4 Mizuno. They're still in my bag because I haven't found anything that can knock them out. Wonderful look, feel and performance. What else do you need?

I know that I could be labeled a Mizuno fan boy, but Mark Crossfield and Dan Hendrickson did a gapping/blending test with the entire Mizuno MP-20 line a few months ago. Even though the MMC and HMB are stronger lofted than the MP-20 blade, in the video it appeared that the clubs were designed to fly and gap from MB, to MMC, to HMB without too much adjustment.

I think the toughest part of it would be to find the transition point from MB to non-MB. 7 iron? 6? 5? The nice thing about the HMBs and MMCs is that they bend so easy. If you do find a gapping issue with your transition point, there should be no issue with a loft adjustment after the fact.

Right now, I'm contemplating my next iron purchase: MP-20 8 iron (MB) or MP-20 HMB 5 iron...

I just looked at another brand which looks interesting. Srixon 785 along with the Srixon Z forged. They look really nice and I hope to hit some this weekend. Anyone gaming either of these Srixon models?

I game the Z-Forged 5-P and Z-785 3-4i (4i bent 1° weak). Coming from a Mizuno MP 5/25 combo set as well and I really like the Srixons. The V-Sole is great for me, but it's really something you need to test. Some people love it, some people don't, some don't notice much at all. The Z-Forged I would say is ever so slightly bigger than most of the other MBs mentioned in this thread so far and if you want some forgivness (as much as you can in a blade anyway) then it's a really good option. The 785s are good and quite forgiving with good ball speed I've found. The Srixons do tend to be a bit lower spinning heads than the others as well, so keep that in mind (I'm a high spin player to begin with so I like it, but if you're not then they might not work as well, but again that's why it's worth testing them first).

Mizuno MP 64s are my standard iron set.

Sometimes when I'm feeling bold, I put MP 4's in the 8-pw, and sometimes 7-pw spot. They make a great combo.

Hit em good

I went to a fitting today at PGA superstore. I tried MP20MB, Ping blueprint, Srixon Z785, Callaway Apex Pro, MP 20 MMC, Ping I210. Everything with stiff graphite shafts. The MP20MB felt the best and performed well, but I was surprised about how nice the Ping blueprint looked and how well it performed. Unfortunately they did not have a fitting club for that iron so I hit it with a 120 gram stiff DG shaft. Nothing really gave me better numbers than my current CF16's, so I think I will stick with these for another year. I really wanted to get a blade style club but why change what I have if nothing else performed better. However the Ping blueprint was really nice!

@peazyEntering this thread late...I'm considering the exact split that you you have on the MP-20 and was struggling with how to gaps the lofts.  Now that you've gamed these longer, do you feel like the stock lofts on the MB's and MMC's are working for you?  I'm still gaming Ping i3's from 20 years ago so I'm used to more traditional lofts anyway...but would love to keep the 10 yard gaps I'm used to.

Side question - do you still like the split you have or would you consider splitting elsewhere in the set?  I know the tungsten drops off from 8 to PW so that seems like a natural breaking point.  But I know a lot of people seem to split at 7i.
