Who Uses The Ten-Finger Grip?

Recommended Posts

I usually check out golf swings on video and when I checked out Madeline Sagstrom's swing I noticed that she uses the ten-finger grip. The last time I saw a pro use that grip was Tommy Tolles way back in 1995. Who else uses the ten-finger grip, and is there any benefit to trying it to help one's golf swing?

Ten-finger gripper here. Always a Vardon style through college and amateur days. Left the game for almost a decade, and when I came back started trying the 10 finger for grins. Have never gone back and the game is as good as it was in the old days. Sure I'll get flamed here for saying this, but IT DOESN'T MATTER. To the observer my grip looks like a bog standard overlap unless they look from behind or pay close attention. Now it's so comfortable I never think about it. Funnily enough I use a Vardon grip for putting. I use a reverse overlap for chipping. Go figure. In the end if it helps you to relax and swing with the hands working together, then I would say go for it. It will not make any real difference once it's comfortable for you than the overlap however. It may make you think about fewer things though, and that is golden IMO. I think doing something unconventional but fundamentally sound can be very liberating.

I use it because using other, more traditional grips were causing me too much pain (I have arthritis in my left wrist). I can now go out and play a round without having to worry about my wrist slowing me down.

When I was little I played baseball so the 10 finger grip was natural for me, but as I got into golf more I found out that Tiger interlocked, so I switched. Found out I hit my drives better with the baseball so I stayed with that.

So after experimenting I use baseball with my woods, interlocking with my irons, and baseball for wedges.

10-finger here. I've played good golf with overlap, interlock, and reverse overlap (yes, this works) over the years, but 10-finger is the grip I started with and the only grip I can heavily play/practice with without eventually having pain from previous finger injuries.

The benefits are the same as the detriments: More comfortable for some and less for others. Adds speed for some and costs speed for others. Gives better face control for some and decreases it for others. Etc., etc..

Harvey Penick recommended it for certain players. Moe Normal used it. Jim Waldron teaches it. Still need to take a "proper" grip and keep the hands scrunched together. It's easier to get sloppy and separated with the 10-finger if you don't pay attention.

I have been tinkering with it on the range this past weekend and honestly it felt really comfortable and I felt like I hit the ball slightly better than normal. Will keep you posted if I stick with it.

I'm considering it. I randomly used a form of it to hit a short putt on the 17th hole yesterday and I had much control of the putter face. I grabbed a couple of crappy balls out of my bag and hit them into the range with a 6 iron using basically the vardon without the overlap. Club face control was way better and comfort level was very pleasant. I'm gonna see how it plays for a bit. I have odd size hands. My palm is a large, but fingers are shorter than they should be. The vardon is impossible for me to use on a full swing. I've been interlocked for ever, but struggle to square the face with irons. I'll probably stay interlocked with woods though, I have no problem with them .

I play a modified 10 finger grip. I do because I don't have the flexibility to get my hands any closer or I feel tight in my arms. I suppose maybe being to a little stocky with no too long arms and weightlifting many years hasn't helped my use a more standard grip.

I can only hit 10 finger. Anything else and it feels to me like I’m hitting 1 handed.
