The last few times I've changed my irons I've told myself to just play the set wedge since I only use the gap for full swing shots....it usually only lasts a couple rounds and then I'm back to special

Depends on the set Gap wedge and what you want to do with it. A soft forged gap from Mizuno or Bridgestone, you might want to hang onto it. If you hit mostly full shots with your gap then the set wedge is fine. If you're a finesse player who uses the gap for touch shots as much as your other wedges, you should definitely move on.

When I bought my Mizzy JPX 825 Pros (2014 I think), I took the GW out of the bag in favor of an MP-T4 in 52*. Sent that GW up north with a set of old MX-23s to live at my buddy's house, so I wouldnt have to travel with my clubs. The last few times I've played up there, that gap has become my go-to for anything outside of about 20yds.

I agree with most of the posters here, I think you'll get more use out of the specialty wedge. But give your gap a try, especially on full shots. You might be surprised at the results.

I’m a huge fan of vokey in the wedges. I used mainly full swing but also for flighting shots in the wind and is easier than the set gw I’ve found. Plus I change clubs all the time and the only constant is 50, 54 58 Vokeys.

With gap wedge, I go for a speciality wedge, the added versatility comes in to be more useful than a set wedge.

If you don’t chip with your 50 then match the PW .. if you do then DEFINITELY go and match the S and L and SL wedges

Use a true “wedge” for your GW. I’ve never been a fan of any of the set-matched GWs I’ve gotten with the rest of the set. Like others above have said, they’re fine for full shots, but I could never get my touch right with the set GW. They’ve always felt too chunky to me to properly use for 1/2 shots and around the green. I’ve even gone so far as to replace my PW with a Vokey. Granted, that’s when PWs were 48*, so the 48* Vokey PW wasn’t all that different than my current 50* GW. Not sure if I have the stones to play a 46* Vokey to replace my current PW.

I play ping ie1's and use the gap wedge (U) that came with the set but I also use a 52 Cleveland Wedge. The Ping U wedge is 50*. The guy that fit me told me that Cleveland wedges are typically 2 degrees weak and put my 52 wedge in his loft machine and it showed to be 54*.

I've been rethinking this issue recently as I have struggled with distances with the 49/50* set GW's since I left my Adams CB3's behind a couple of years ago.

Contemplating trying a Vokey or Ping Glide 2 Stealth 50* in that spot for a bit.

The Adams GW's from A4 Forged. CB2 and CB3 all worked great for me over the years, so most likely more of a swing issue, but change has been in my head a bit as of late.
