Already addressed this. Longer courses tend to attract longer hitters. Just as I would not expect too many single digit players on the local executive 56 rated course, I would not expect too many 300 yard hitters either.

6600 yards is on the cusp for some. It’s a perfect distance for me if I want to hit some mid or long iron approaches, but my son and his old teammates used to play short courses to hone their accuracy and the 7000+ yard courses to hit more driver.

I did this a couple weeks ago. Landed over the bunkers where there is a down slope. 15mph tailwind and frozen fairways.

I've done it a handful of times in last few years, I'm 56. My expectations on the course are 250 for poor/middling and 285 solid.

But came across a guy at the range last Spring, he was urbane mid 40's & slightly round. The back of range is 240 to the net. The guy's ball was careening near the top of it. It's tall net too around 100 feet. He was the real deal, his PW even had an incredible thump to it. Seen two other guys with that capability and control. Came across another guy who had little control but hit the ball so hard you had to look out at 200 to catch it and then it was barreling into the top of treeline which was 250 out. So 300 guys are out there, the real cue is the sound off impact. Completely different.

I live in NW NJ, we don't have many who hit it 300+. I've certainly never played with one. I've seen 280 by a kid going to college the following semester.

My favorite is the guy who thinks he hits it far and doesn't. 3rd hole at my home course, the fairway bunker to the left is 265 out. I've already played 2 holes with him, a par 5 and par 4, so I have a sense of how long he is. We are on the tee box and he's waiting and waiting. Til finally I say "That bunker is 265 yards away, you aren't going to reach it."

He was quite perturbed with me.

I wasn't, when he came up 30 yards short of it.

Great posts Gents and I couldn’t agree more with both of ya?

I don’t notice many guys just comin on the board and tootin off about hittin it three bills and change, though there are quite a few that do and as Hawk stated, the guys that can rock’n roll, don’t do a lot of chirpin, only speaking to it if asked or in contributing to a thread.

I don’t believe in that phrase “humble brag,” cuz if someone indeed did, can do or does something, then it’s not bragging at all, passive, aggressive or in any other form, it’s simply stating a fact.

Though the faces and names change, the courses change and the equipment changes, this game does not change......

After 52 years in and around the game, there is one fact that I believe to be immutable...

At the end of the day, the ONLY number that counts is the number in the box?

To concern oneself with anything else but lowering that number is a waste of one’s time, energy & efforts.

As always, just my .03 worth?

Hah, wish I could post this in the USGA distance thread. It’s exactly what I’m worried about. Slower play.

I’ve played many people who wait forever, then I’d get on the tee box first saying I’m not a long hitter and end up generally a safe distance and 40 yards past their tee shots. By the 5th hole or so, they tee up sooner.

Thing is, it’s fair game to roll past people, some of the time. They generally don’t mind as long as it’s not every hole.

In my experience I have played just one round with a guy who could hit it 300ish. I was stunned at how effortless he made it look.

Conversely, I have run into countless s**t-talkers off the course who claim they hit 300 yard drives, but as you probe deeper and ask about their technique you often get "oh you know, it's just a natural thing for me...never took lessons." and the BS starts to get layered on even thicker.

I'm ecstatic to get a 230 yd. carry with the ball sitting in the fairway. I will never be in the 300 club and I'm okay with that.

Played yesterday afternoon with this guy. This is what over 300 looks like. (180+ ball speeds)

The beauty of the internet is that everybody can drive the ball as long as they want.

On real world grass, I average (according to GPS) about 225-230, which is bombing for a senior, and I'm not first to hit my next shot very often at all.

The funny thing is that its true for most of the long hitters I know. Its not tough to hit it 300 (not saying average, but regularly hit it 300) if you are reasonably athletic, understand how to use your body, and have decent hand eye coordination.

I’ve hit many to 280s but not so much 300 without wind and roll on my side. 107mph swing just doesn’t get out there without some help. 110 might roll out to 300.

All those charts showing 105 can get 300 yards are assuming perfect ball, strike and path.

Real 300 yards is really tough unless you swing 120.

Your comment about distance charts sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole. It’s a bit interesting with lots of incomplete data.

Assuming there are 60 million male golfers in the world and average club head speed of 106+ is capable of occasionally hitting a 300+ drive. That would mean there are 4.8 million golfers capable of 300+ driving distances.

I also found a data source that had a chart that 110mph was only the 25th percentile for 17-29 year olds. I think the players skew to better players but it still shows that lots of people have sufficient clubhead speed.

I didn't read the entire thread, so sorry if redundant....

Because it's GolfWRX, and all forum members are Loooooong! Seriously, depending on conditions, it's possible, but I've read enough on how most of us golfers (NOT WRXers, of course) over estimate how far actually hit the ball.

Exactly, the “Rabbit Hole” analogy seems appropriate, and the statistics don’t seem to reflect what many of us have seen.

There are a lot less than 10% with 106+ CHS, but you don’t need those speeds to score well and higher swing speeds don’t guarantee good scores.

I would expect 10% or more on this forum could hit 300 yards at least some of the time, and that seems about right.

Keep in mind that Trackman numbers are a bit biased towards people with higher swing speeds, but I suppose anything is possible?

Age plays a big part, and more than 25% of males who play between 17-25 having that swing speed is completely believable. Maybe even more?

Given that, I suppose 8% is not impossible. Maybe even believable?

Yep, and seemingly effortless speed. Not a big guy either, 5'8 and 160 lbs. Carries it 3 bills easily.

It's a sight (and sound) to behold. He can play too! I hover around a 0 hc and he has no issue giving me 7 or 8 shots in a match.

Playing a course you know with a long hitter is eye-opening. I played in a scramble with a young chap who could hit it over 300 yards. It made some holes a lot easier. At our par 3 2nd he just used a 5i to drop the ball onto the green from 230 yards. Everyone else struggles to reach it with their driver or more likely has better sense than to let loose with such a dangerous club on that hole. It made the 3rd harder for us because the tree that we usually go around was now so close that we couldn't get over and to the green because we needed a wedge (he didn't need a wedge) and going under would never work. We all laughed when he sent one so astray that it had clearly left the course completely. We applauded at the 15th when his ball went so far that he cleared the hillock we were all used to dealing with. Very educational. He is a very good player and a great lad so we enjoyed it immensely. But he admitted that there were times when he'd prefer to be a shorter hitter because when it goes wrong it can go seriously wrong for him.

As many stated, there's a lot that goes into this. With a mediocre swing speed of 96mph and my Epic Flash SZ, I get around 250 on average including rollout at an elevation of around 600ft. Give me an elevated tee in the mountains of New Mexico, a nice 15mph tail wind, a rock hard summer fairway and a solid hit and I can definitely go 300. I think that's what you see a lot - people hit that 300 yard drive a couple times a season in very specific circumstances then they adopt that as their standard even though their true average is considerable less.
