And 300-yarders are now commonplace here at WRX.

We begin finding our men.  We found them sometimes without their gloves... and sometimes much, much worst.

"El que hace trofeos de los compo de golf" means "the demon who makes trophies of golf courses".

We call them "tres hundos."

I've always thought that a trained Orangutan would make an excellent driver of the golf ball.  Really long and immensely strong arms.

But you would need to do the putting.

What about an elephant?

They're really strong, and he could grip the club with his trunk and really smash the ball.

As a bonus, he'd work for peanuts...

I'll be here all week.

Go watch some 13 year old boys golf tournaments.   You’ll find plenty of 5-1 to 5-6 boys hitting it 265-280.

So true.  There are more "kids" now who can hit it 270+ off the tee yet still can't break 90.  Kinda puts the USGA's definition that "A male scratch golfer, for rating purposes, can hit tee shots an average of 250 yards and can reach a 470-yard hole in two shots at sea level"  in perspective.  You still have to be sharp with the wedges, able to scramble when not, and make short (3'-8') putts.

I’m telling ya.  There’s an army of them coming.    Just watch the drive chip putt. There’s 10 year olds on there flying it 230.

very true.  You need the rest to do anything.  But this idea that you need to be big to launch a modern driver is wrong.

heck look at the Korda sisters. Would they weigh 200 lbs together ?  Maybe. Barely. Lol.

It's not just a "now" thing though.

I'll never forget - we were at a random junior tournament when I was 17. Most of the decent players in the area were there. After the tournament they had a fun LD competition on one of the holes for a $50 gift certificate.

One guy had recently tried to play more with this group - but he started out thinking he was a long driver and had competed in it before taking on tournament golf. He thought he was a big deal because he'd made a couple more regional competitions. He talked a lot of random junk despite not having won anything and not having played with or against many of us. So he of course thought he was going to win the LD competition.

About 20 of us competed. He hit one hard for him, was pretty pleased...and finished in the bottom third. Wasn't even close. Everyone who was a high level tournament player knocked it past him. There are always kids who can smash it. And a ton more than people realize. Part of the reason everyone thinks this is such an exceptional thing or a big issue now is that the videos and forums and social posts just weren't a thing then. It was just word of mouth mostly. And better players didn't do long drive back then - they just won the LD hole in the Junior Open - or the Men's Open.
