COVID-19 and local golf (NO POLITICS)

I live next door to Sun City and practice and play there a fair bit very disappointing they closed but 100% agree it was the right thing to do. I see White Wing promptly punched and sanded the greens already!

The exact same thing can be said for the flu. Many people get the flu and don't get tested so they are not part of the statistics.

This is a fresh virus that nobody has been vaccinated for like the majority of us are for the flu virus. Once the medical powers get a handle on this you'll probably see that it is equal in status as far as mortality rate to the flu. This took the World by surprise and we didn't have much in the way of defense built up against it to fight it. One positive that may come out of all of this is the realization that it is a good thing to be vaccinated against the flu and Coronavirus. I just don't understand why people refuse to get a flu shot, primarily out of fear.

True, but the CDC takes that into consideration when they publish their statistics. The numbers for the flu in relationship to the mortality rate are an estimated number.

I will be 65 soon. Fortunately I can still hike if any more courses close down. Got in 64 miles last week.

Don't know about the private clubs, but this seems about it for the public courses for the near term - unless they all of a sudden open up a grocery store onsite.

Wonder if Solano, Napa, Santa Cruz, Monterey counties will need to follow suit. If for no other reason than to keep all us Bay Area folks from driving up to them on the weekend. If not, teetimes at Rancho, Paradise, Eagle Vines etc... just got a lot harder.

After seeing the news conference, looks like only essential businesses (grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, gas stations) and services will still be operating. I don't think government officials consider golf courses to be essential. I guess I'll be catching up on my reading.

TGA (Texas Golf Association) just canceled all competitions and qualifiers between now and April 12th.

Course remains open, but the restaurant is carry out only. Crowd today was lighter than normal. Lots of kids, though.

I understand that. But Newsom said he was asking places to close to to slow the spread of the flu. Higher mortality doesn't have anything to do with the spread. People over 65 don't spread the virus any faster.

San Francisco Bay Area has ordered Shelter In Place till Apr-6. I'm pretty sure golf courses will be closed.

I hope I'm wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if more counties, especially those heavily impacted ones, would take similar measures. There goes more golf during the virus plan ...

I don't think anyone is saying that older people are more likely to spread the virus. Newsome is asking people over 65 to stay at home so that they (me) will be in contact with less people. To reduce the likelyhood of coming in contact with people that are carriers. Older people seem to react to the virus more seriously.

Yes. Indecision may or may not be their problem. Actually probably just a response to federal govt most recent recommendations. State organization like TGA would get crucified for ignoring those.

Agreed, but it is frustrating. I’m now worried that the private clubs I play at are going to have an excuse to close, which I don’t want.

Here in Western NY state the courses are opening since winter has fizzled. Clubhouses, bars are closed. Pins are to be left in (use the 2 finger method for retrieving ball from cup). Some courses limiting 1 person per cart or just walk.

 

Golf's a natural for maintaining social distance with little effort, getting exercise and fresh air. It's still a bit too cold for me but I will be out there sooner than later now that the ski mountains have closed due to the virus. I'm taking this virus VERY seriously, but golfing with friends wouldn't worry me.

Same concern here. Maybe I will be spending the next few months fishing in the Lower Laguna Madre. Casting is sort of like a golf swing.

If there's one thing we can do and keep our distance from others that would be playing golf.

I've been social distancing for decades and I love golf cuz I only have to share 4.5 hours of my time with three other people, then I can rip back home and keep to myself for the rest of the day/weekend.

MG, which course in MD? Desperately hoping the County courses stay open. Played Northwest Sunday and it was fairly busy. Weird to see people still sharing golf carts

But that's not what Newsome said. He said to " in an effort to slow the spread". I think he is full of BS. Older people don't spread the virus more than younger people.

Older people have a greater chance at dying from this than a person in their 30s or 40s maybe he didn't word it that way but that's what he meant. He is advising they stay in so they don't contract it

You're an utter pillock or simply spouting your own bias... or you genuinely know better and are lying by conflating the two. If you watched the presser they were two distinct things:

protect older people and have them stay home to prevent them getting itlimit access to non-essential places like restaurants and bars to try and reduce the spread of the virusBTW, which course is California are you now not playing because of this? Which is your local Californian course? If you want to keep trying to take politic swings, even if you keep on missing, go find another outlet.

Apparently I didn’t interpret what Newsom said in his press conference the same way you did. I’m going to turn 70 next month, and I don’t remember being offended by anything he said. Maybe my brain processed the Cliff Notes version of his speech.

P.S. I was going to play my old home course in San Benito County. But received an email that they are shutting down, starting tomorrow.

And Yoche Dehe in Yolo Co. is also shutting down.

Well, shelter in place order is in effect for Santa Cruz County as of this evening so no golf for me. I was planning on getting out tomorrow but that is not going to happen now.
