What’s your prediction for when the PGA Tour resumes?

Recommended Posts

Unless they are going to go with the "old school" method of just having some ropes out there with no stands, corp hospitality, etc. it will be 3 to 4 weeks after we are given the okay to start allowing groups over a certain number again. Assuming that this is all able to slow down, go another 4 to 6 weeks after that, your guess may not be too far off. Will be interesting to see what the resumption of the season looks like, for sure!

I'll play :-)

Optimistic: PGA Championship. Be the most anticipated PGA since... um, erm... ever?

Otherwise: The Memorial. Start at Jack's place with an excellent field and give them two weeks before the US Open. Pretty much everyone skips Canadian Open - including the RBC guys - and Graham Delaet finally gets a PGA tour victory!

Edit: that didn't last long, my rose-tinted glasses guess already done.

Probably no earlier than June or even July. I'm thinking we as a society will be treating this very very cautiously, so I would guess large gatherings of thousands of people won't be able to resume until it can be proven the peak of infections has passed. From graphs I'm seeing with social distancing, that is around the summer time.

At first, I thought you guys are crazy. Isn't RBC Heritage (Apr-16) the next one on deck? Now, I thought a bit more. I think June or July 2020 sounds about right. We are looking at postponed Masters/PGA Championship/US Open. I think in 2016, the Open Championship and PGA Championship were 2 weeks apart. In 2020, we may be looking at back-to-back-to-back majors. I'm certainly not complaining ...

Many businesses need to start picking up before we can have large gathering. So many logistics. Will airlines be able to fly? Will hotels have people to work?

I have some doubts we won't see spectator golf until August, after the Olympics, if there is one.

I know it’s a logistical nightmare and won’t happen for many reasons, but if there’s no spectators, it would be cool to mix up the usual courses and play some gems that don’t get played much due to not being able to accommodate a lot of spectators. Imagine a beautiful mountain course in 4K being played by the world’s best (look up Greywolf in Panorama British Columbia for what I’m thinking).

Back on topic. I’m optimistic about having no spectator golf back by June. Really hoping for an October or November Masters. That would be a once in a lifetime experience that would be a treat after enduring quite a pandemic.

I don’t see spectators back until 2021. It will take time for society to go back to how things used to be.

I'd be surprised to see a tournament in 2020...if I'm a top 100 player, am I going to start travelling with all the risks? My wife wouldn't let me go to Vegas a month ago...I can't imagine these tour spouses are much different. Even without spectators, players would still be exposed to dozens of people over the week.

Sports may be the least essential business/activity right now...people tend to forget that organized and professional sports didn't even really exist until 150 years or so...and didn't really take off until the 20th century.

A silver lining might be a reality check for the insanity that is youth sports. Amazingly, this week I got an email for my sons soccer club (15 years) saying dues were going up despite having paid for a full year for 2019/2020...and with the virus half of the year was cancelled...no mention of any type of refund or adjustment (clearly not paying for tournament fees/field fees). I'm still waiting to hear from my daughters college regarding room/board for half a semester.

With the global economy entering a recession and millions now jobless, professional sports are delusional thinking that people will have tons of disposable funds to throw at their business.

As unimportant as sports is relative to the health and economic challenges, they will be and indicator of the “health” of both as they return .

Further, they can make an impact, fans or no fans attending initially, on our “health” as a nation and around the world.

Seeing Spring Training in baseball, guys in the cage and shagging fly balls, nothing more “normal” than that.

Seems we need a month to see, with expanded testing, how many cases there are. Another month to to see a hopeful flattening of the curve. Another month for restrictions on work and travel to ease up.

So, what’s that, Mid-June for a semblance of normalcy?

Maybe they can get started with some events with no fans late summer.

Yea I agree. Sports are more essential than Most want to accept. Studies have been done on sports effecting suicide rates etc. and it’s alL positive stuff. Let’s not forget the competitive outlet that sports provide ....that collective outlet that Keeps the male urge to conquer and explore at bay. If sports die , your going to see wayyyy more lawnmower races in the subdivision with fights to the death at the end. Funny. But serious. Most males need an outlet. Unless we’re suggesting that outlet becomes killing for food again , sports returning is the best idea for normalcy outside of returning to work and earning a living.

ibe said it before. But today’s true sports greats. Gretzky , Tiger , Jack , Brady , Ali , etc are yesterday’s conquering generals. Same same.

I grew up in Manhattan...and many of my friends had zero interest in sports. My dad's an academic...I recall being around many adults who couldn't have named more than a handful of professional athletes.

I agree that getting exercise is important. But not everyone is competitive and needs to assert their physical dominance and compete.

I went to Vassar...sports were a true afterthought...I can't recall a fistfight or brawl in my four years there. We did have the best looking girls on the East Coast, and more drug dealers per student than any other campus.

I'll take getting laid and getting high any day over watching a bunch of dudes sweat.

Lol. Yep. But watch what happens when it breaks down. You’ll need the other skills. I hope it doesn’t. But my point is...and you’ve helped me prove it.... that sports play a vital role in societies very polite existence. You’re describing you not ever having the need for exerting dominance . A lot of the population has had that need once or twice. As you can’t unsee or unlearn that. The need for the outlet is real.

It's going to be the dismissiveness of so many that is going to drag this out for much longer than I think anybody was ever going to hope for. Hopefully there's just enough of a scare with things that are coming out of places around the world that even some of the more stubborn folks listen. I would love to think that we are able to get back to at least a little more of a "normal" in 6-8 weeks, but because of those who aren't going to take it seriously until things get worse, that may be more like 3-4 months.

Whether it’s sports, music/concerts, museums, my point was around entertainment value with the things we love and associate with as normal and the outlets we all need.

I can see how if you associate seeing athletic performance with “watching dudes sweat”, you wouldn’t be interested in sports. But, from a sports fans perspective, that’s an odd way to look at it and far removed from the motivation of watching sports ; )
