Combo up 2 different brands of irons?

Recommended Posts

So I love the blueprint irons but I just don’t get to play enough anymore to play a full set. That being said no other Ping irons really trip my fancy right now to try and combo up. Was thinking possibly 718 T-Mb irons to go with it. Am I crazy thinking of going two different companies to make a set. If I’m not crazy what would you make for a Frankenset.

I guess you could play a different iron 4 to PW as long as the gapping was what you want.

Exactly, it looks like a mixed bag of irons in a bargain bin. But if it works it works.

I use Mizuno SC but bagged Callaway Rogue Pro's in the 4 and 5 iron a couple rounds and it really did help get my height up. Same shaft as well.

I play Callaway Apex MBs 7 to GW and Titleist 716 AP2s 4 to 6 iron. The lofts match up perfectly and clubs are similar in size and top line. The biggest dimensional difference is the bottom. I much prefer the thinner bottom of the Apex MB irons. I have better distance control with the Apex MB irons but know for a fact I don't want to play the 4 iron and the 5 to 6 iron are up for debate. Titleist AP2s are very forgiving in the long irons.

People play different brand hybrids/irons all the time so why not? I’ve even thought about taking that further and trying to find long/medium/short irons that each perform the best for their intended purpose regardless of brand. As long as the gapping fits and there are no transition issues from one to the next it shouldn’t be a problem.

Play what you want if it works. Like this guy. Excellent article. How Bernhard Langer scored irons from Tiger's longtime clubmakerBernhard Langer employs a “mixed iron” setup, but it’s the kind of equipment concoction that would drive anyone with OCD crazy. The set begins with cavity-back long irons (4-5) from Artisan, followed by an Adam’s Idea Pro Black 6-iron, three Artisan mid and short irons (7-9) and TaylorMade’s RSi pitching wedge.

I play the Ping Blueprint irons in 5-PW and the Wilson Staff FG Tour V6 irons in 3-4, the V6 long irons are an absolute dream to hit with very good forgiveness levels, medium to high launch and plenty of spin plus they compliment the Blueprint irons very well (they have similar lofts and a compact head size although not quite as small as the Blueprints), btw I have KBS C-Taper 125 S+ shafts in all my irons and really like them.
