So for people with a net are you using the larger 3x5 mats? Anyone just using the smaller mat and standing on concrete or grass? is there a large difference in levels?

If there is a significant height difference, you could pick up a 4x6 horse stall mat, ~$45 from a farm supply store, to stand on. Stall mats are .75 inch thick.

Here is my setup:

It't hard to even see the net in this pic, but its there, across the garage opening. Actually, its a carriage house, built out of scrap wood in about 1903. The net is by Dynamax Sports. The mat is a real driving range mat, scavenged from my local muni when they were replacing all of theirs. I was able to pick the best of the discards, which was pretty good for a long while, but is now getting pretty bare. I set up the target to be at an appropriate launch angle for a 6-iron. I'm so glad I have this setup available right now. The course closures hit just after I went to Monte's clinic, and am working on a couple of really promising changes. It would really suck to not be able to even hit a ball. I'm really tempted to get a Mevo.

This is my "putting green:"

It's your basic "felt-like" indoor/outdoor carpeting (like you would staple to the porch of your double-wide). It lays directly on the concrete pool deck. Rolls surprisingly well - fast and smooth. Depending on where I put it on the pool deck, I can have various breaks.

I've got no short game options at the moment, except 8' chips in the family room. But I have 8 or 10 of those floating range balls. I think I'll set up a floating target once the pool is open for the season.

Classic carriage house!! How about the time needed to nail all those 2" or 3" boards for the walls instead of using plywood! That would be an ideal time killer for a virus lock down event!

The "boards" actually look like 4 x 8 sheets of sheetlap.

I was going by the irregular bottom edge of the boards on the left of the doorway......looked like individual boards to me. Either way i like the look of old buildings.

There was no such thing as plywood when this building was built. The "siding" is mostly rough-cut redwood 1" x 6" or 1" x 8". Post and beam construction with concrete footings at the posts, but with 4" x 4" redwood footers directly on the ground under the walls. Originally a dirt floor, but now has a concrete floor, poured inside the footers. The doors are tongue and groove pine.

Edit: I just looked again, and the front wall is indeed made of tongue and groove pine, but those may have been purchased as pre-assembled panels. Is that what is meant by sheet lap? The other three walls are 1" redwood boards, with narrow battens covering the gaps.

I shredded a Pelz 'Short Game' mat, which did much better when I was only taking partial swings in the basement. Apparently it's time to invest in a nicer mat. Or get plenty of practice hitting out of lousy lies.

Legit question for you guys showing snow still on the ground, how do you have a decent game without an indoor set up? It takes me till about mid-July before I finally have my swing under control each year coming out of winter and I could technically play all year here.

 

This thread has me thinking though. I have a framework of 4x4 treated posts in the ground from the previous owner of the house where I guess they had a swing or something. I think I will hang a good heavy net for both golf and soft toss as my oldest girl was supposed to start playing softball this year.

Here's my setup. Tried hitting a real ball, straight through the moving blanket. Figured it would happen, but mainly bought it for sound purposes. I also want to get an overhang and extend it a little bit on the sides. I'm going to look into a big mat. I have a couple of these small ones and they feel good but the size makes it difficult for the top of the bag. The blanket absorbs chips and I really need to get my chipping distances down so hopefully it will work out, at the very least, I can swing a club at a ball (foam unfortunately). I did try out my cheap Japanese launch monitor and it did read decent distance off the foam balls that seemed equivalent to the readings I got at my local top golf range.

It's called the yupiteru Atlas g5 or something like that, it's similar to the new prgr. Main downside is it's completely Japanese, so you I had to use translation on my phone to read the manual.
