Getting swing weight on the number, Club Champion

crapula

Recommended Posts

Recently got fit at Club Champion in Willowbrook, IL. I was told that when they build a club the have a 1 swing weight point tolerance. My 6 iron gamer came in at D3.5 and the club I was hitting the best came in at D3.9. The fitter said that's the same because they are within 1 swing weight point.

I had them reshaft my 3 and 4 iron. The 4 iron is D4.5, the 3 iron is closer to D4 and is not as heavy though still feels heavier than the rest of my clubs (which is understandable, longer club longer swing always feels heavier to me). For some reason they built the new clubs to D4 on paper, even though srixon specs are D3 and all my clubs come in between d3 and d3.5. I was told they put tip weights in the shaft of the 4 iron to get swing weight up. They also installed a midsize grip which I had them change to standard when I picked it up, I asked won't that mess with swing weight? They said yes and put it on the swing weight machine and said perfect, D4.5.

Is this acceptable? Should I ask that they are done again closer to the rest of my set, D3 - D3.5? Or is this 1 swing weight point tolerance a standard thing among club builders?

Am I just asking for too much?

Lead tape in tiny amounts and you can make them all d4.1 if you want ... d4.5 maybe a heavier grip to lighten that club SW wise

If you are asking too much depend on many things, first of all was this a "standard build" or was it a Custom build to high end pricing?....Next they have told your their tolerances , was that up from or after? you would most likely have to accept it anyway, and next is, what really fits you ON EACH CLUB in the set? SW matching to the same flat value DONT give the same resistance on all, but progressive the longer the club is. And at last its grips...grips has a weight tolerance of plus minus 3.5 grams as the norm, so unless this was a "high end custom build" you want get weight sorted grips, and we should not judge SW values with grips anyway....its really a big mess, and in the end, values on the paper means nothing, only feel and performance does. And to the last question, is 1 SWP a "Standard"...for some it might be, for others its not, but OEMs is hardly ever any better than this, and then we are back to my first question...was it a high end custom build and pricing? or just a normal set?

PS! its not a problem to make all clubs spot on a certain value, but it demands more of the one doing the job from the start and all the way to they are done, and the Customer would have to pay a higher price than a normal standard build.

The clubs that are around d3 are fine, those are from the manufacturer. The 4 iron from club champion that I had them reshaft is d4.5, and I know they added tip weights. I think they just added too much weight to the 4 iron because they erroneously installed a midsize grip.

Is Club Champion considered a high end club builder?

The 3-pw came from srixon and they were all d3-d3.5. I had cc reshaft the 3 and 4 iron.

Sorry, but tbh you won’t notice 1SW at all once you start playing.

Last year I games a set of irons at D5/D6 for months unknowingly as they just felt like D4 which I was traditionally used to.

I never even noticed, until I put them on a scale.

99% of the golfing world couldn’t tell between 1 SW point, or even know what SW is for that matter.

It’s your hard earned money, so if it bothers you that much ask them to redo it or get a partial refund.

"To ensure the swing weight hit in the bay matches your actual clubs, we use the same calibration club to make certain that the scale is within a half of a swing weight tolerance."

That means PLUS MINUS 0.5 SWP or a tolerance on Iron heads of plus minus 1 gram......thats not "high end" in my book, but it seems clear pricing is to the higher end....https://clubchampiongolf.com/newsletters/club-champions-tolerances-are-unmatched

On this forum there is many amateur club makers who MOI match their own clubs, and most of them is able to build clubs with a tolerance of less than 5 MOI points or plus minus 0.4 grams. The latest post was from one today, he ended with plus minus 3 MOI points who is GOOD. (plus minus 0.25-0.30 grams). Thats where we should be to call it a high end build. plus minus 1 gram is no better than OEM standard, so when CC state their tolerances is un-matched, its "empty words" and marketing BS.

I noticed the 4i right away. Compare it to my 5 iron at d3 and the 4 feels like one of my wedges.

I agree that I can't feel half points, but full points are easy to feel especially in the long irons.

Take it back and have them redo it. Without a frame of reference (assuming you didn't take in your 5i and SW it there) they likely just measured the SW of their demo shaft and head and got D4-D4.5 or whatever and went "okay cool" and built from there. If you did tell them D3 and they didn't hit that is a different story.

If you paid $110 for a steel shaft plus installation, it better be perfect. Take it back and ask them to make it right. It would be very easy to do.

My experience with CC was less than ideal as well. I normally do my own club work, but thought I'd let them do one since I was feeling lazy. Big mistake. Their tolerances are not "high end" at all. They weren't even the specs that they fit me for and recommended!! I like the ability to test everything out there at their store and the guys are always nice, but I'll leave the building to myself. Heck, for those costs, you can do it yourself and buy all the equipment to do so!

I had all my clubs with me. They checked swing weight of my 6i, D3.5. Then said they would build my 3 and 4 to D4 and the 4 ended up 4.5.

I'll bring the 3 and 4 back when they are open again, hopefully in 2 weeks.

When they told me the tolerance they abide to I should have walked out. But they're professionals so I took their word for it.

The SW system delivers progressive resistance as we go longer, TOO much for many players, so if your #5 was D3.5 it makes no sense what so ever to have D4 as target for clubs thats longer.

if you pay money for a service then you should expect that service to be done to your satisfaction.

I received 919 Tours on release day, so excited, played straight away, walked off the golf course after 3 holes; swing weights were far too light. I complained had a new sent built at Mizuno Scotland that day and I got them two days later, all at the desired D4. Mizuno managed it perfectly.

When I was at Artisan for my wedge fitting; they measured my 2 year old RAW Wegeworks SM7 wedges(4) and they were all almost perfect spec after 2 years of play.

That was my first thought. If their tolerance is 1pt then they should have been aiming for D3. Aiming for a heavier sw in a longer club is more of a red flag than missing by 1pt imo.

Midsize grip was a mistake. I brought it back and they put on a standard.

CC told me if they say d4, d5 is acceptable. That is not +- .5.

I'm a mid handicap player, so I don't need aerospace tolerances on my club specs, however I am meticulous. Your specs are your specs, and if I can get my irons within 0.25 SW point (maybe even 0.1) in my garage with a manual golfworks swingweight I got off craigslist and tip weights only, they damn sure better be able to nail your specs if they claim high accuracy club making.
