Getting swing weight on the number, Club Champion

So if an oem is like that, is it acceptable that club champion is within 1 point?

Let's all remember my original question.

Sorry dude. Wasn’t trying to be pedantic. Just find that crazy that you’d spend the time to go to the course, start the round, then walk off because you could tell something was wrong with your clubs. I would have enjoyed it, regardless, but I totally get your frustration since you just invested in new clubs and were hoping for the best. Glad they fixed your issue

Cheers mate.

I was very satisfied with my Club Champion driver fitting and extremely unsatisfied with my build. Specs were all over. I ended up selling the driver and building my own over again. Needless to say, I'll be going to TXG or True Spec

What is an acceptable range to expect from an expert club builder?

I would assume +-.25 is acceptable.

I dry-build by own clubs to a targeted SW, after much testing of what I personally like from a feel perspective ( L-PW wedges SL at 36.25", then the rest in 1/4" length increments, and 0.5 SW per club ). This dry-assembly includes the shaft, ferrule, tip weights, and head only. I will grind the tip weights such that I am dead-on my targeted SW number. If my target is E1.5 I'll get to exactly E1.5. I will re-measure the dry sets a couple times over a few days before epoxying, to guard against any sort of drift in my day-to-day measuring, and to guard against any mental lapses on my part. I can control that part of trying to achieve assembly perfection, along with my tape build-up routine.

What is up to chance is how much epoxy weighs per club, and the randomness in how much a grip weighs. Go to any store, buy 10 new grips, and weigh them each, and you can find a +/ 1g spread.

So when your factory ordered clubs may exhibit some error in SW, be mindful how SW can be so easily changed, via a mere 1mm in club length, to how much epoxy ended up being used, to whatever tape brand/thickness they used, to the variation in grip weight, and if the grip is actually 100% seated into the butt.

Agree. I play Ping irons and they always come with a 1 sw tolerance (+- .5 sw). My question is what do these people do when they re-grip their clubs? SW will not be anywhere near that tight so do they break the clubs down and re-weight them? Even keeping the same model grip but changing the color has an impact. Yes! Since I do most of my own work what I do is check them on my swingweight scale, then take the new grips I'm installing and weight sort them putting heaviest grip on heaviest iron on down to the lightest grip on lightest iron. This keeps everything close enough for my skill level.

The way I see it all:

You're the paying customer, expecting a product that you paid for. If you feel that you did not get that product, talk to the company you paid. Put the ball in their court to see how they respond. You have some risk/responsibility in it. because you allowed them to do the work and may have to just deal with it if they choose to not redo the build. When all is said and done, you will have an experience that you will talk about to others, Club Champion has the ability to turn your experience into a great one or a poor one.

There are club builders that will build clubs to the tightest of tolerances, but you can and should expect to pay a premium. The conversation about Club Champion's pricing comes up a lot and its a very divided topic. I build my clients clubs to an extremely tight tolerance, but there is a cost to spend that much time ensuring they are correct.

Yes a tolerance of plus minus 0.25" SWP or better is good, while plus minus 0.5" is not better than standard OEM who might be plus minus 1

Think of this as if we talk Head weight, that makes it easier. The rule of thumb matches a #3 iron where 2.0 grams is 1.0 SWP, while a #9 needs 2.26 Grams pr SWP, but lets use the lightest and 2.0 grams

Tolerance SWP - Tolerance as Grams Head weight - Lie angle - Play length error

Plus minus 1 SWP = Plus minus 2 grams Head weight - 4* change on Lie angle

Plus minus 0.75 SWP - Plus minus 1.5 grams head weight - 3* change on Lie angle - 1/8" on Play length.

Plus minus 0.5 SWP = Plus minus 1.0 grams head weight - 2* change on Lie angle

Plus minus 0.375 SWP - Plus minus 0.,75 Grams head weight - 1.5*on Lie angle - 1/16" on Play length

Plus minus 0.25 SWP = Plus minus 0.5 grams of head weight. - 1* change on Lie angle

Plus minus 0.125 SWP = Plus minus 0.25 grams of head weight. - 0.5* change on Lie angle

Plus minus 0.0625 SWP = Plus minus 0.125 grams of head wight - 0.25* change on lie - (Suggested dry fit tolerances)

DRY FIT ERROR EXAMPLE - Including a Grip tolerance of plus minus 3.5 grams (5 grams 1.0 SWP)

Play length 1 mm (1/8" = 3.17 mm) = 0.25 SWP

1* Lie angle = 0.25 SWP

0.5 Grams head weight = 0.25 SWP

3.5 grams grip weight = 0.7 SWP

SUM OFF TARGET = 1.5 SWP or Plus minus 0.75 SWP

BLUEPRINTING TOLERANCES

Play length - Better than plus minus 1.0 mm - 0.25 SWP

Head weight - Better than plus minus 0.125 grams - 0.0625 SWP

Lie angles - Better than plus minus 0.25* - 0.0625 SWPSUM Tolerance - BETTER than plus minus 0.375 SWP or better than 1/3 of a SWP

Thats why we should leave grips as the last we add. We measure TOTAL weight on the clubs build without grips, and use tolerances in grip weight to even out total weight progression who will vary due to shaft weight tolerances, and small plus minus on head weight. If we think on shaft , grip and grip tape as 1 unit, and we play constant weight shafts, Sum shaft + grip + tape should be as constant as possible. On Descending weight shafts, we use the lightest grip on the longest club, and the heaviest grip on the shortest club....We simply take advantage of the variables there is from production on each component, so by good sorting, we can make a set with very tight tolerances who feels good since we have blue printed all specs

It should be no problems at all to anyone to build a set with a tolerance of plus minus 0.5 SWP like CC claims is "unmatched", but it demands that we start with Loft and Lie angle since we have a relationship of about 4* to 1* so 4 off on lie = 1 SWP, who also means 1 off on lie is 0.25" SWP, so we cant afford to leave lie and loft to the end, thats the first we do to make sure we dont spoil our own dry fit job.

For lowest possible tolerance, dry fit and adjust tip weights / head weight into a tolerance of plus minus 0.1 gram. If you need a tip weight of 3.7, grams, you take a 4 grams and grind it down to 3.7, if you dont, you already got off track by more than "plus minus 0.25 grams or 0.125 SWP". Equal amount epoxy for all (0.35 used - 0.5 grams mixed pr club. 0.15 lost pr club /wiped off)

We also need a SW scale thats a bit better than many ive seen out there, the rulers on them is anything but easy to read "between points" so many is almost impossible for anything else than full or half SWP. If the SW scale ruler is good, we should be able to "see" values like 1/3 and 1/4 of a SWP .

Its also a MUST that we leave grips out of it all, and use a constant offset of 9 SWP higher tha targed when we use standard grips, and 10 SWP above target for Mid size. Dont even think of using "split grips" for this job if you want the best tolerance possible. If the split grip is only 1.0 mm from beeing fully inserted, we trick the SW scale and made the club 1.0 mm longer than it is - return value during dryfit becomes 0.25 SWP higher than it actually is, and that makes us to go 0.5 grams lower on head weight than we should, so to avoid both grip weight who becomes head wgt adjustment (light or heavy grips included on the scale during dri fit.), and variable play lenght on the scale depending on how good we got the split grip seated....leave the grips out of it, they have no part of the dry fit session for anything but finding a offset factor from the actual club with this grip to un-gripped, then dry fit all without grips, thats how we can make ALL parameters blue printed, even total weight progression from club to club, who on a BLUEPRINTED club should be BETTER than plus minus 0.5%

Total weight for a Dynamic Gold X100 #8 iron is plus minus 350 grams, and 0.5% is plus minus 1.75 grams on total wgt. or 3.5 grams pr inch., and we can do better than that when we take advantage of grip weight tolerances to even out the summary of Shaft + Grip + grip tape.
