Open Championship to be Cancelled

Is The European Open taken? With Brexit, is it the British Open once again? It’s a mystery.

I for one would really like to see an October Masters

They can afford to host the event without fans and perhaps would love to signify a "return to golf"

They gotta get the majors in this year even if it’s in the fall. If it’s safe enough for the players to travel and distance themselves, they should play even if the courses are not perfect, there are no fans, and the coverage is not as good.

 

Plus, there should be enough testing available by fall for everyone to see that they are negative or already had it.

Regardless of whether or not anybody's health is in jeopardy the optics would be terrible.

Forgetting for the moment what the general public would say you'd have plenty of golfers that would say "Why am I "locked up then ?" Why can't I play if they can ? I play by MYSELF"

Exactly Dale! They should be putting the offenders (often the same people) in timeout, not killing the entire thread.

Someone else will probably have pointed out that there never has been a British Open. The Open Championship. however, has been around for a long time. I'm guessing it won't be played this year.

Even overseas press and TV announcers used to refer to it as British Open at times.

Growing up I never heard it called anything else. Not until 2014 when I joined here did I find out it was THE open.

Common in newspapers throughout England forever to refer to British Open, heck just found an online London news outlet with "British Open" as part of the headline that was published within the last couple of days.

I've "evolved" and it's really just been a point in very recent history to get the "Open Championship" out there as a concerted effort, IMO, and that is the name and I want to try to be correct. But the suggestion it was "always" that isn't consistent with the practice of how it was referred to even across the pond.

Peter Alliss refers to it as "British Open" throughout his entire book! Case closed!

 

Again, I now try to call it by it's correct name, but no reason to have battle lines drawn or call people "pedants" - better not comment on that one.

Exactly! It's called the British Open in many parts of the world to resolve ambiguity with other Opens.

St. Andrew's has it for 2021 because it is the 150th British Open. So they might move everything back a year so St. Andrew's still hosts the 150th rendition.

On tv in the 1980s both Jim McKay and Peter Alliss on ABC would refer to the US Open as the "Open Championship" during the broadcasts.

I’m sure they just lose their spot. But I wouldn’t bet on it mattering.
