Oh. I gotcha. Then yes. My fault. I misunderstood ( shocker ) Was tiresome all the newbies who reacted to the name and not actually reading what I said. Particularly in iron threads. Irony is , when I chose that name , it referred to putters. And I had zero clue that blades vs CB was a thing.

As long as they don't starting calling the Canadian Open the America Jr. Open... it's bad enough being prefaced with RBC

Assuming conditions allow it, it's be cool to have an Autumn of Majors. 4 in 6 weeks would be a neat playoff-esque run.

Right. So they re-marketed the Championship. As it is by far the oldest open championship (nothing before 1860) and the first to let non-gentry, non-club members (caddies) play; I go along with their marketing.

Yes, growing up in the 1960's - 1970's, we called it the British Open. When I went to Scotland in the late 1970's, we still called it the British Open. I changed when the powers that be started calling it the Open Championship. I have no problem with that. It's their tournament. The Masters was named the Spring Invitational Tournament when it was first played. Clifford Roberts changed the name.

When did the US Open start? 1895, it was played on a nine-hole course in Newport Country Club - the "Junior Open." The Open Championship? 1860 on the 12-hole Prestwick golf course. History, and democracy, thanks to the Scots.

I am not up on my World Golf History, but were the Open's during WWII vacated and counted in that number and will #149 go the same way...I do understand wanting to uphold tradition and #150 is a must at St Andrews

Not counted, but their records show nothing from 1940-1945. Can't find what I'm looking for but pretty sure it simply wasn't contested. Some of the courses were used for the war effort.

From what I gather, in the UK they refer to the PGA Championship as the USPGA Championship. Doesn't make me peeved.

That's weird. I've seen highlights of older British Open Championships and "British Open" was prominent on the large, yellow scoreboard. You'd think they wouldn't make such a mistake.

It's really sad that they cancelled this event for insurance money. Maybe it's time to cancel it forever, make the Players the 4th major.

guys, its 3.5 months away. It's not cancelled yet. They will give it some more time before they make this decision.

The big problem is the preparations are hampered with the lockdown, these type of events require months of lead up time with regards to course prep, temporary structures for fans etc etc. They probably still have time at the moment but there is no sign that the lockdown will end anytime soon so the original date is looking unlikely.

Now talk it could be played in September the week before the Ryder Cup.

yea, I agree but they still have a bit of time. Wonder how they would do it in the fall with the Masters also possibly going to the fall. Pga tour is going to be busy in fall if that is the case.

Masters is being pencilled in for November. I'm hopeful/optimistic but not counting on it. Just to add this is an anonymous source and not official. Report: New major dates, revised schedule close to being unveiled

Golf's governing bodies just simply do not understand. In the words of Dr. Fauci..."The Virus dictates the timeline".

 

I simply do not see the majors happening in the fall, especially if there is a second wave of the COVID-19. I hope I am proven wrong but this is the reality of the time we are living in.

Definitely agree. I think the Masters is the only one that has a chance at this point. They already have a lot of infrastructure in place and they probably can execute the plan more efficiently than anyone given it's done annually. Obviously the pandemic status will be the gating factor.

my take is always been it’s their tournament, if they want to call it “the Open” then that’s what it is.

Yea, if things are shutdown the same way in 2-3 months as now, golf tournaments being cancelled would be least of concerns. Global economy would be in shambles and change history as we know it, possibly worse than the virus itself but people dont think about that.
