I couldn't resist Ping Anser F

I wanted another Anser while I adapt to new blood pressure medication and putting is going to be poor for awhile. I have grips and shafts any ideas on how to clean up this head?

My first pass at cleaning this head up. I started with lemon juice and baking soda. Then used a little brasso on some badly oxidized spots and a toothbrush. Then it spent the night in a 40% white vinegar 60% water plastic jar.

My next step will be a little ketchup in the cavity and a few other spots. Then finish sanding with Scotch-Brite pads.

They nice part of a temporary putter is if you get one pulled from a lake it can always go back.

Then it will back to the good stuff, Wilson 8802s, a Wilson 8813, Anser 020s and a Dalehead.

Wow. The head looks great. Can you do anything with the shaft or is that too far gone?

I would not clean that head anymore than what's in the photos. That looks spectacular!

It was a joke, however one of my dream putters a Ping KBI BeNi Anser is at the bottom of lake in Southern Oregon. And no I didn't do it the son of a golf professional did.

The shaft is too far gone, it was in water a long time.

I don't know for a fact but suspect that Anser is one of those with the ball bearing down the shaft. Pulling the head is NOT easy. Easiest way to get the shaft out is to drill a hole in the hosel below the shaft and then insert a punch and drive the ball, and shaft, upward and out.

I'm going to clean a few small places with ketchup and call it good. A light sanding with Scotch-Brite will just smooth out some very minor scratches. I'm happy with how the head turned out. The rest is easy, reshaft, bend to my specs, cut to length and put on a grip.

Unlikely the putter is too new. Actually easiest way for me to remove a shaft that has a ball bearing down the shaft is to get in my car and drive to the Ping factory. They have done it for me several times.

Nice idea, know of any .580 butt black shafts with .355 tips? Actually a Royal cord putter grip is the current plan.

If you pull the shaft will you weigh the head? Assume around 330g but curious. I’ve got a numbered Anser F in my collection but when I bought it, it showed up so pristine I haven’t been able to bring myself to put any wear on it, and I’ve been assuming it’s too light for me anyway.

I will weigh it but I expect a number around 310 grams. Still more than 15 grams heavier than the last 020 Anser I weighed. My numbered Anser F was too light unless I was putting on very fast Poa in the Pacific Northwest. I sold it years ago.

Dammit! I saw this putter on Ebay as well and considered bidding for a resto project. But I thought it was too far gone. It obviously sat in water for quite some time. Now I'm jealous! Looks great right now. Keep us updated.

I thought so too until I pulled it out of the white vinegar and water Tuesday morning. Love the slight pitting everywhere but the face.

I have been buying Ping putters on the cheap for years. I just realized I have this putter. Wow.

Here are some pics:

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the crud out from the 90-degree 'seam' under the back Ping logo? A Dremel tool seems too harsh, and Q-tips seems like ten years of rubbing with little result. Just ask my wife.

 

Any ideas or suggestions?

We could have a restore-off contest between us. I envision a TV reality show called "Which Dummy Restores a Putter Slightly Better".

No club making professionals allowed. Just average golfers with some sand-paper, paint, vinegar, and time.

How about using an “air-gun” similar to those used at golf courses to clean your shoes ? (Or similar)

This would require some sort of physical abrasion. Blowing air won't work unless we've got about 376 years to wait.

Dish soap and water scrub with toothbrush. Then ketchup in those areas, wait half an hour scrub with toothbrush. Worked on mine.

Update

I played with the putter yesterday. Looked good behind the ball, rolled it well and the sound and feel was pretty good. It sure looks big next to an 020 or Dale head.
