10 - 18 handicap - Non set wedges that you play?

jjfcpa

Recommended Posts

12-15 handicap depending on how rusty I am.

I've played a number of non set wedges in the past and the ones that I've always come back to are the Callaway Mack Daddy's.

Currently, I play a 54* MD5 W Grind (12* bounce) for my sand wedge with Project X Catalyst 80 graphite shaft.

I also play a 48* MD5 S Grind (10* bounce) as my approach wedge.

I decide some time ago that I would use a non set wedge instead of a set wedge because then I wouldn't have to adapt to new wedges every time I changed my iron set, which I did way too much the first 4 years I played golf. I do play the PW that comes with the set.

I am bouncing around(pun intended) between SM7's and Glides. I pulled the 50* Glide for a Vokey, but find the Glide more forgiving on long shots, so back in the bag it goes. I really like the 58* Vokey D grind and 12* bounce. I need more time on the Vokey 56* F grind w/14* bounce sand wedge.

Bag is in overhaul mode

Cleveland CBX2 wedges. Absolute game changers for me. My instructor had suggested the originals and I was lukewarm to them. After working on my short game a lot last year, I bought the 54*. I quickly ran and got the 50*.

Cleveland did a great job of creating a cavity backed wedge that is great on full shots and excels in the short game. I just got the CBX Full Face 58* (need to update the signature). I haven't had a chance to actually hit it yet.

I had Mizuno MP T4 wedges (52* and 58*) in the bag for a number of years.

Finally thought it was time to upgrade late last year, went with the S18 models over the T20. 50*, 54* and 58*. The 54 has become my club of choice on almost everything inside 50 yards. As comfortable as I was with the MP T4s, I can pull off shots with the S18 that I wouldnt have done previously. Amazing spin and hold.

I have an older set of Vokeys with my spare set up north and they are fine wedges. I have friends who swear by Vokey, Callaway and/or Cleveland.

I think you need to hit a few (different brand, but same loft/bounce/grind) and see which work best for you.

Currently my handicap is 15.3...I was using Vokey SM7 but went back to my favorite wedges...CBX2 52, 56 and 60...I am more confident with these wedges, I used to play with CBXs and now I have returned to CBX2...I really love of these wedges.

Slightly out of range as a 19 index, but I play Mizuno S5, 52*, 56*, 60*. I love the soft feel.

56/60 need to be replaced, ordered T20‘s. Might ditch the 52 again for another club at the top of my bag.

My PW is my set PW in the Srixon 785, might change that out as I don't play it well, my other wedges are a mixed bag.

51° Callaway MD3 - love this wedge btw for full shots.

56° Ping Glide 2.0 Stealth

60° Ping Glide

Plan on swapping out my 60° with a TM High Toe just for more versatility compared to the Ping.

I play SM7 all with Project x 6.5 shafts. I play F grind in 50, and M grind in 54,58.

My 50 is my favorite approach shot club. It is my 130-135 club and is my best point and shoot club in the bag for sure.

@jjfcpaI decide some time ago that I would use a non set wedge instead of a set wedge because then I wouldn't have to adapt to new wedges every time I changed my iron set,
This is actually an interesting reason. There is probably less variation in new models of MD, Vokey, etc vs changing iron sets. Of course, this assumes someone is disciplined enough to keep playing basically the same club year after year (ie Spieth with certain model/grind of Vokey).
I prefer the set wedge through the SW (only available in GI clubs) but never thought of it this way.

I am a ten handicap. I normally carry just two Wedges. A 54* 14* of bounce and 58* 16* of bounce Miura Y wedge with KBS Tour Stiff shaft. I was struggling with the gap left between the PW and the 54* wedge. Picked up a CBX RTX4 50* 10* bounce to bridge the gap and I am loving it. It has become my goto wedge for the short game from100 and in.

Current wedge lineup is AP3 PW and GW (48) with Tensei Red Shafts Reg, Mizuno S18 51 bent to 53 and 56 bent to 57 both with Project X LZ 5.5.....although my irons are graphite still like the feel of steel in the wedges and the softer flex from 6.0 really gives me better feel and control around the greens....I also have an S18 60 same shaft but found the lob wedge in the bag leads to bad decisions and using it at the wrong time...
