I remember watching Monty on Sky Golf in the UK and they were doing a pre-Masters piece. On the in studio simulator they had the 10th hole at Augusta set up and Rob Lee asked Monty to hit a tee shot. Monty was obviously uncomfortable as Lee had great pleasure in stressing that the tee shot needed a draw. Monty said something along the lines that the tee shot never suited his eye and he just tried to play for the right side of the fairway and play from there. He hit one exactly where he said he would, to the right side of the fairway. Lee pressed him to hit a draw and Monty basically said he couldn’t, he could just play a ‘less fade’ shot by closing the face. Lee kept the pressure on and got Monty to hit another shot. He hit it again with a little less fade to the right side of the fairway. Lee asked him to hit another shot that was actually a draw. Monty, irascible at the best of times, harrumphed a bit but hit another one. It drew about a yard iirc and said that’s the best you’re going to get and walked back to his seat with Lee laughing and shaking his head.

A heck of a golfer who got the maximum out of his game...mental strength only seemed to falter in the Majors. Darth Monty on Twitter is well worth a follow if that’s your sort of thing.

Yep lol, that’s why he won a bunch of order of merits but just not good enough to win a major.

You know, at the time, I thought he would have been better off with MB's.

As for me, I'm what I am with whatever, I would be a better me if I lived in a sunny climate, if I saw a solid teaching pro. If I switched out of wrong shafts many years earlier maybe my index would be whole better. If I realized how big tee and green game matter earlier on I might be seeking CB's to cut my index in half instead of a quibbling improvement. Blades keep my mediocrity fun in a way a Big Bertha iron never ever could. To each his own.

I hear ya and agree. When it comes to a guy like Monty I think he played what was absolutely the best for his game.

... I see these kinds of comments and always wonder why anyone would go from MB's to SGI's? I find a big enough difference between my Z Forged and Tour Forged and P760 irons. Especially from the 6-4. I certainly don't need a ton of forgiveness but appreciate some forgiveness on my off days. If I had a choice between Z Forged and BB Irons I'd chose the MB's every time. Of course I would chose a good players iron over both. I have q set of T100-S coming soon and expect them to be the best of all worlds with the playability and look at address of an MB but the forgiveness in the heel toe weighting of a GI.

So? In the big picture people place way too much value on major wins. Shaun Micheel won a major for his only professional golf victory with one of the clutch shots in a major of all time. Does that make him a better player than CM over his career? No bleepin way. My favorite golfer was David Duval when he played. He won 1 major. Better career than Monty? Not a chance.

Most people know Johnny as major winner and announcer.

Paddy, the Irish guy with a few majors, which werent many at the time up until the Irish just poured major winners of Clark, McDoweel, Rorry and now Lowry.

People will always remember Monty as the the guy who never won a major.

An order of merit is nothing more or nothing less than its own league.

Now any major, its a championship, history and prestige. To an extent, a legacy for those elite who have won multiple majors.

Majors define a career, not order of merits.

courses are open here but you have to putt to an imaginary hole and avoid other players (even more than usual) and if you accidentally make it you have to Lysol the ball before picking it up. You're better off hitting into a net at this point.

Thank you! There is a giant difference in many types of “cavity” backs. The cavities pros play arent far off from blades at all. Monty is the exception.

Is it not comparing two different leagues?

Majors are championships (past champions and the highest ranking players) and order of merits are b-sides.

Lets keep it apples to apples and take money out of the equation (the root of all evil).

Majors are the biggest events, yes. But winning one does not make a great career. Many events have better fields than some of the majors. Since you mention that as the “why” does that make them higher ranking? Past champions, a la the Masters old guys, are fun to see but do nothing to enhance the quality of the field.

 

I fail to see how anyone could believe that Micheel had a better CAREER than a Montgomerie because of one great week in their life. Three top 5 finishes in 397 events. I am sure he is a wonderful guy and clearly a good golfer. Way better than anyone on this thread. But he did not have a better career than Monty. And I am guessing he would agree.

 

My Padraig or Miller example would probably be more of a dead heat for me. Anyone that wanted to use the extra major to lift Padraid would not get an argument here. As an older guy who watched Johnny in his prime? The way he played here in the desert in the early 70’s was sublime. It rivaled the best of Tiger when on. Blowing away fields with ball striking displays that really had not been seen before.b

 

edited to add...I know nothing about soccer so did not address that...and the Masters is not a Championship of anything. It is a club invitational that grew beyond anyone’s wildest expectations.

Everyone should play a few rounds with a set of blades (ideally with the correct shaft) a lot of people might surprise themselves.
