Cobra F9 driver shaft question

Recommended Posts

Hello all I have recently gotten an F9 Driver from Cobra, love the look and everything. It came with a generic shaft so I decided to upgrade to the Atmos Black 6s Tour Spec shaft. Although I love the look of this combo I am having a hard time launching the ball with this combo. I know the Tour Spec and black atmos are for lower launch low spinning but it seems like I am hitting stingers most of the time with this. Not sure if anyone else has had this problem or have any ideas? I have my F8+ still I was hitting that and thinking about going back to that. That has an adila nv 2kxv mlt stiff shaft which is also a lower launching shaft. I can hit this great, mostly down the middle but I really want my F9 to work. I've tried the adila shaft in the F9 and it kinda works but didnt know if there was a better shaft to really try, maybe the atmos blue (non tour) shaft?

My misses with the F9 are usually a hook left, not sure if maybe the shape of the head or the weight difference in the F8+ VS the F9 are throwing me off or what, just seems the F8+ is easier to get in the air. Just thought I'd ask, maybe I'll be going back to the F8.

Usual swing speed is 102-106, ball speed usually in the 145-150.

Have a 9* head. Set it at 10*

The generic shaft it came with was a Prolaunch red.

thank you for your time and ideas.

Derek

Heavier weight in the front(near the face)promotes a fade. Maybe try that? Might have to play with the loft settings too? Hard to say without seeing ball flight and numbers.

Did you get the shaft from Cobra?

I won a shaft from an online retailer a couple years ago. I put it in my LTD.

I was hitting it a lower than normal, so I increased the loft. I kept hitting it lower. Turns out they put a left handed sleeve on it.

The tip will have an LH etched into it near the lofts.

@derekmunster you don't say which loft F9 you have or what you have it set to.
I'm curious what shaft actually came with the F9. I'm not sure what "generic" means.

Just saw that.

Setting it to 10* actually closes the face. As a starting point you can use the same settings as your F8+.

You might also want to double check that the head weights of the F9 and F8+ are the same. They should be close, but it's possible that they are different and that's throwing off your delivery.

Does the F9 feel excessively lighter or heavier than your F8+? Curious about the adapter too. I got a Mizuno with a LH adapter once and it drove me nuts till I noticed. Adjusted the loft to the oposite of what I wanted and it hit fine.

@jvincent Yeah I'll have to weight the two, I know the F9 head is larger which could be more weight and I know the weights in the head are slightly heavier, the F8 is 2 - 12g and the F9 is 2 - 14g. I have my F8 set at 9.5, but the F9 can only be 9, 10 or 10.5. I am going to have to check the weight, that is true. Maybe I'll try lighter weights if heavier with the F9 with the aldila shaft, maybe that is the key...hmmm. So many options! I will I could go to the store now and just have them tell me lol. Damn virus!
And I'm curious about if the atmos black is a LH shaft, if thats the can that solves that lol. But probably should of went with the atmos blue shaft for more launch.

Just so you know, the numbers on the Cobra adapters only matter when matched to specific heads. In your example if you have the F8 set at 9.5 then when you put that shaft into the F9 just have it show 9.5. That means that it has the same face angle settings as you had on the F8.

Regarding the shafts, there is really no such thing as a low-launch or high-launch shaft. Launch is completely dependent on the dynamic loft at impact. What can happen is that a specific shaft allows you deliver more or less dynamic loft because of its weight or bend profile.

People don't swing the same as robots and we react to what we feel during the swing.

... I loved the Atmos Tour Spec Blue in my F9 and thought what the heck, I'm swinging great in Phoenix for another couple months so why not see if the Atmos TS Black will lower my spin and get some more roll. It launched a little lower but not night and day different, but I really felt like I had to attack it to get the feel I am used to and that led to all kinds of trouble. Went back to the TS Blue and was quite content until I tried a Tensei Orange (non pro) and liked it even more. Still in it now. I have picked up the Xtreme and installed an Aldila White 130 in s flex so when the Covid rules allow us to play again I will see if it can out perform my F9.

@chisag I'm jealous! Haha, I really do love the F9 on the way it looks and feels, but thats a good point with the TS black really going after it. When I got ahold of one it was a good one, but not very often. Thats why I would think the blue would be a good fit for me. The Adila that I have in my F8 seems like it has a higher torque which might be helping me with launch too. I have an atmos blue 7s in my 3wood and it is incredible! I knew I should of followed that and went with one of those lol.

I also have an F9 9* degree head with the HZRDUS SMOKE 6.5 at 44.75". I found that when I got it, I also struggled with getting height and carry out of the stock set up. I switched the head to 10* with the 18g in the back, 6 up front and noticed a difference. What really help me was adding a 12g Tour Lock Counterbalance plug (7$). It added a lot of stability and really aided in feel of "Launching" the ball. Also, it added static weight to the club without raising the SW. Felt "faster". It has been the best driver I have ever owned. I tried out the SZ Extreme in a 10.5* and that lasted two rounds. Best of luck. Cheers.

F8 adatpers fit in F9 (just the markings are different), so swap the shaft and see what happens.

I had an F9 with tour length weights (18g and 6g) and the head was nice and heavy (about 201g without adapter). My current Ping G410 LST very similar but launches a good bit lower.
