What's wrong with 10 year old clubs?

Recommended Posts

I have been playing Titleist 712 AP1's since they came out.

I have been taking a series of lessons with a guy who is also in the business of selling clubs. Not a problem.

We were talking about my equipment a couple months ago, and I was saying I would like to start playing more of a "players" iron, a little smaller profile than my AP1's.

I found a set of Callaway 2009 X Forged. Always liked the look and feel of them. He says he sold a lot of those, 11 years ago.

These are in great shape, have a shaft that we know fits me well, lofts that I can play without having to get used to new distances or buy new wedges.

What difference does it make? Is that there much difference with a solid one piece forged chunk of metal on a shaft from 2009 to a set from 2020?

Lofts and lies can be jacked around on a 10 year old set of forged clubs. Very likely they were hit off of mats at some point in their lives ... so you'll want to have those checked out.

Grooves can be worn on forged scoring clubs, especially if someone hit a lot of balls on a sandy range.

Grips may need to be replaced. I've also seen more than a few iron shafts that were not straight after 10 years.

There isn't a major difference. But be aware there is potential someone has done something to alter the club in a negative way over the years of smashing them into the ground and/or mat.

As long as they are in good condition, you aren't losing a thing.

Don't buy into these anti corporate statements? What do you loose? Forgiveness, precision and workability all in one club. About 10 yards per year, so right at 100 yards. Or just plain feeling like a BOSS! /s

Yea I picked up a set of MP33s for some fun testing and as long as you get something that fits your specs well you can get something that treats you well. Like others have mentioned lofts may be weaker then new some weighting may be different with forgiveness but if your moving to more players clubs your expecting less forgiveness anyway.

If you don't know, read Jerry Tarde's article from 2018 Golf Digest. Editor's Letter: New Versus Old Stuff - Golf Digest@gdb99, when the Covid19 virus danger has passed, Tarde and pal Mike Stachura will visit your house to confiscate all your clubs more than five years old. They're probably electronically tracing the path of your initial post right now.
If you object to this, see if you can contact Johnny Miller for an exemption. (JM won the 1973 US Open with a club mix that included vintage Tommy Armour long irons from circa 1949).
=============On a more serious note... As Mike S. noted, there's benefit to changing your wedges when the grooves start to disappear. And, get new grips when you feel the cold steel of the shaft through your glove.
Other than that, if you wake up one season and part of last year's mix just doesn't work anymore, go get fitted. Find out what equipment change might help your ball flight. That said, you don't have spend $600 for this year's hot new driver - you may be able to get the same benefit from different drivers from the past two cycles. But, the best way to exploit the recent super stuff is doing a side-by-side with current club on the launch monitor.
And, in golfdom what is hot this year may also have been hot 10 years ago. Consider the Titleist Z Blend from 2008.
Z Blend Forged Irons Cavity back long irons transitioning to musclebacks in short irons and wedges. Several OEMs are doing similar things today - although with smoother head blending.

I do not think you are giving up much. I recently switched from irons from 2009. Just switched because wanted something newer. Loft for loft about a 3 yard difference which is nothing for me. Just had to adjust hitting different irons for my distances. So now I hit my 6 iron instead of my old 5 but they are the same loft.

Whats wrong with 10 year old clubs? The fact that they are not as proven as 20 year old clubs. Does the gain in technology surpass the familiarity of what you are playing now. Thats a tough question, some people are playing junk and some clubs don't fit their fit profile, but if they where good clubs that worked 10 years ago[or longer] they should be fine.

Nothing wrong with any club. But sometimes you're giving up some performance by not upgrading.

As everyone else has said - you wont lose a lot really, just make sure the faces & grooves arent too worn down before you buy them

You may also need to factor in the cost of getting the lofts, lies & grips checked and replaced

Irons are comfort/precision clubs, so use what works, not what is new. Loft for loft, the only thing you could technically be considered to be "giving up" is some ball speed IF you are comparing the older irons to the hot faced distance irons like P790's, T-MB's, Z585 etc etc. But again, its not about distance. As long as the older irons are in good shape and fitted to you and your swing then you're fine.

Adam Scott would say absolutely nothing is wrong with them. He’s in a 15(?) year old iron.

I do think that the Taylormade 790 et al type clubs are revolutionary. The long irons are just easier to hit. I think a 3-pw set was just one club at various lofts, now theres 8 different clubs. Especially 7-pw, everything is pretty similar.

I just replaced 26 year old taylor made oversize with 9 year old Adams CMBs... I'm a 5 handicap and my iron play isn't what's holding me back.

Play the irons you want. Unless you are getting extreme results, they probably aren't costing many strokes.
