Who hates putting short putts with the flag in?

Recommended Posts

Agree with all of this. The only time o take the stick out now is of it is leaning toward me and would effectively reduce the amount of room at the front of the cup. I would say with some confidence that those I’ve lipped out but caught any part of the stick have come to rest closer to the hole than those that just get slung around the cup. I don’t feel like I have to be an less aggressive than before. I mean, if you’re hitting a 4’ putt so hard it would come to rest 6’ past the hole maybe you get some bounce effect off of the stick but I can’t believe this to be the most effective approach to making short putts.

Our club uses pool noodles cut off and put over the bottom of the flagsticks just above the fat end. They come to about 1-2 inches below the top of the cup. A made putt will rest on the noodle and the flagstick making it easy to pick up your ball without touching the flagstick. I think I’ve missed a few putts when the ball is diving into the cup and hits the top of the noodle and spins out. As others have said at least we’re getting to play.

Very Kim Possible-like under battle conditions!

I’d have to pick up somewhere on 17 most of the time but someday I’m breaking 70!

I’m a flag out golfer but our course has the holes modified so at least they drop in a bit. Can’t play for real so don’t care right now and just hitting little pitches. Anything that allows us on the course!

Countdown to The Masters has begun!

Typical for me that my game was really coming into form just in time to not be able to play real golf. We have been shutdown for about 1 1/2 weeks. Just reopened Saturday. I am not playing, but just range work and chipping. Playing with the cups the way they are is just frustrating and my hubby and I are trying to stay as isolated as possible.

I envy you. My game had been going well over winter and now we’ve had six weeks of no golf over here. It’ll take a miracle to get my swing back in shape before the end of the season as I can’t practice into nets, it just seems to make me worse.

We are very fortunate here in S. TX. We have had low infection rates and are slowly phasing back toward normalcy starting tomorrow. Raised cups will transition to upside down cups next week which is progress. We have already had multiple triple digit heat index days (hot and humid) which will also be helpful although generally miserable to play golf in. Hopefully things get better for you folks soon as well.

I'm going to commit to getting over this mental block by just hammering puts into the flagstick. Can't be any worse, I don't think...

Tournament round yesterday. Greens were absolute crap so that factors in but I had four 3putts through 12 holes. Tough going when you hit 7 greens on the front and shoot +3. Three 3putts through 9 holes.

I have to get over this mental block or just stop playing competitively until we can pull pins.

I'm amending my answer. Now that I've played with a cut off swimming pool noodle in the cup, I don't mind it at all. I think what I previously most disliked about putting with the pin in was the awkward reaching into the hole to pull the ball out when it was at the bottom of the cup with the pin inserted. Now I just pluck it off the noodle. Easy peasy.

I really don't care for the short cup flag mandate. I understand why but that doesn't mean, regarding golf, that I like it. I have had a handful of chips hit the flag and not go in. I have had several putts hit the flag and bounce away. I generally leave the pin out so the flag doesn't deflect the ball, exception being a downhill putt. I agree with all those who are just thankful we can get out and play.

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
