Maxfli Softfli. Just a good, soft, 2-piece ball that you can usually get from GG/DSG 3 for $30 or less if you time the sales right. I think that most people think its just because its a GG/DSG brand and because of the Maxfli name but its a really solid ball.

Like @NRJyzr , favorite under radar ball is the Precept U-Tri Extra Spin, after couldn’t find those anymore, was fortunate enough to stumble upon a stash of Nike Tour Accuracy DD, which was “somewhat” similar.? Played the first version of B330s for quite a few years, before switching over to the previous year and current models of Tour B XS - anybody see a theme here??

Underrated in terms of sales. The TP5 is the best ball on the market and the Pro V1X should sell way more than it does. The Maxfli was the best balata ball back then but sales were miniscule compared to the Titlest balata.

The Maxfli Tour CG balls that are sold at Golf Galaxy and DSG are better than most will give them credit for.

The Maxfli HT caused a lot of Titleist players, including me, to switch. Oh, also a couple of guys named Nicklaus and Palmer. It didn’t knock Titleist out of the number one slot, but no other ball has done that either. Then something happened with the HT. I don’t remember what, but it disappeared off the shelves. Maybe someone can refresh my memory. The only reason the Pro V1x doesn’t sell more is most Titleist players, including their staff, prefer the Pro V1. I think there are makers of other balls who would trade their sales for the V1x. As for the TP5, I wish I was getting a dollar royalty for every dozen they sell.

 

Edit: I did a little on line research, which reminded me that other Maxfli HT players were Greg Norman, Fred Couples, Jay Haas, and Tom Watson. Also the event I couldn’t recall was an earthquake in 1995 in Japan which shut down the only plant making the ball. Soon after the urethane cover Titleist Professional was launched, followed by the Pro V1 and the Maxfli HT never made a comeback.

Titleist DT Wound, I got clowned the first time I put the (OG) K-Sig in play (they paid for lunch btw) then I gave each a ball and they were sold!!!, the OG TM TP Red/Black were awesome and the Nike Tour D loved that ball.

MG Golf C4. It's time to restock on balls and I had to talk myself into Snells and out of the $19.99/dozen C4. If the C4 were available in yellow, I'd play them all the time.

Hard to quantify the "underrated" part of the label, but I'd argue that the TP Red didn't really gain it's cult status until it became a heavily discounted ball. ProV1 performance at 1/3 the price.

Several Wilson balls have been surprisingly good when I subbed them in for an over the water shot. The DUO still is a strong performer in the winter.

I really liked the Wilson FG Tour X. I held on to my last half dozen for about 3 years until I finally hit the last one in the water about 8 months ago.

Was about to come on this thread and post the same thing. I played the Maxflis all winter and really really like the balls. The X just does everything well for my game. On the BOGO deals or even the 2/$50, they are highly underrated.

It was the longest ball I ever played and spun a lot around the greens. I remember buying 3 dozen from rock bottom for about $20 each. Had no idea they were on close out until I went to buy more next year and they were gone. I’ve played future iterations of the FG Tour when budget golf would blow them out. That was a good ball as well but the X version was noticeably better. Too bad Wilson cannot market their premium line as they were fantastic. I cannot recall ever seeing any FG Tour ball in a DSG / GG / pro shop, etc

I also think they hurt themselves by pricing it similar to the big boys I would’ve said, look we have a ball that can perform better than the others but because we are paying so few pros (insert joke there) we are passing the savings on to you. Fight the perception that lower cost equals lower performance / quality. Instead they did / said nothing.

Funny you say that - I just pulled out a doz of the Nike tour platinum and a sleeve of Tour Black, in the last three weeks. Lost 10 of the 12 platinums, the Black get played after I lose the last two rzn.

I think the Srixon QStar Tour balls are underrated. Soft, urethane cover, launch high and fly for miles.

The TM Burner TP/LDP was insanely good for a non-urethane ball. So good that if you gave one to someone who didn't know anything about it they might think it was. Best performance from 150 yds in of any non-urethane ball I've ever played. Was sorry to see it go.

The Burner TP was an amazing ball wasn't it. I think RBZ Soft is great ball for the money, I love the way it feels off the putter and wedges, but it doesn't quite have the same spin that the Burner TP had.

this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nike Distance balls (red one) were superb when it came to distance. I really think they were almost illegal, nothing today comes closes to that type of distance. I still remember my longest driver ever and it was with a nike red distance ball, 390 yards on a 400 yard par 4. of course it was downwind and dry, but the course was always like that, only variable was the ball.

I see a few posts about the Dunlop DDH - I always liked those. Another one I haven't seen much of is the Ultra Metalmatrix. I hit my first 200 yard drive on one of those (at age 12, with my dad's old, cut-down persimmon driver!).
