The longest ball I ever hit was the Titleist Gran Z (GranZ). I think they were only released in Asia - I heard they might have been same as the "NXT Tour" relased in America.

With that said, none of the NXT Tours I hit over the years were as long as that Gran Z I played. I am convinced they were non-conforming I was hitting them so far. Not sure about that though.

Maxfli XS Tour. Only drawback was that it scuffed easily, but was half the cost of the real performance balls.

I hated that ball. Felt like I was hitting a sponge and spun way too much.

It had a 'Zynthane' cover according to Spalding. It certainly took off all right, trouble was, it kept coming back! Spun like crazy and greg Norman suffered on more than one occasion because of its lack of control.

My favourite 'sleepers' FWIW, the Hogan tour deep and the FG tour and Duo more recently. Liking the CS tru vis but hardly under-rated?

I am taking underrated to be the balls that weren't ever found on the 'top shelf' of the ball rack in our pro shop. I also completely agree with quite a few members here that Wilson balls (Duo U in particular) are underrated, and I would be very interested to try the new Staff Models...

The Wilson staff black golfball form about 6 years ago. There probably wasn't a better ball off the tee for controlling spin. Iron spin was good too, but they were hard as a rock.

Can't believe Taylormade LETHAL hasn't been mentioned yet! TM continued to sell old stock of these for $2/ball for years after it's initial release. These things were long and cut right through the wind, they also did not want to ballooon. Urethane cover so spun plenty. Had a pretty firm feel.

Currently using Srixon XV's which actually perform very similarly in my opinion.

I can't figure out if this thread is about balls from the past that were great or underrated balls that you can get now. I started playing in the 70s and fondly remember the Molitor. We'd only use it on long par 3s, especially if the wind was blowing. Titleist balatas would only last 3 holes and they were expensive. I can remember loving Tour Editions, the Top Flite Strata (which had a card suit on them). I bought U-Tri Tour's until I just couldn't find them anymore. Loved the Lethal, Burner TP, and the TP red. Today I think the best value balls are D2 feel, Gamer, Wilson 50 Elite...I'll still purchase premium balls if I can find a good deal, like the 3 dozen ammo boxes on RBG in which I've found TP5 and B330S for $50-60 for 3 dozen. I'm also really liking the Oncore Elixir these days. For price and performance they are my ball of choice these days. They do everything a premium ball does for me and have a more durable cover to boot. Just got 3 doz with a free towel for $75 shipped...

There have been a few as of recent years.  I think the Q-Star Tour has been a sleeper for me and I've been playing it this year.  I bought 10 dozen at the start of this year from a used site for $7 a dozen.  Great performing ball for the money.

However, the Maxfli Tour and Tour X balls at Dick's have been great balls, especially for the money.  I can usually find them at my local store at 2 boxes for $50.  I've been playing the Tour X because I think it is a little higher ball flight.

I came from the Maxfli Revolution era of golf balls and have some really fond memories of the brand.

I really wanted to like the SoftFli as a winter/spring ball, but didn't think that they flew anywhere.

Wilson staff FG Tour X... And let me tell you why!

PGASS had a glitch in their computer. The dozen was ~$39, but if you separate them and buy by the sleeve, they were $2.98 each. I used to go in a separate every single dozen, untill they stopped producing them. Oh, and they were 109 compression. Longest ball I ever hit till the tour preferred x showed up.

Played with some random guys last month and was looking for one of their balls.  Found it in some tall grass.  Molitor?  Yes, that's it.  I didn't know they were still making them.  I remember when they came in triangle sleeves with tissue paper.

They recently started making them again. Who "they" are, I have no idea. My brother is the only person I know who plays them. He bought in bulk years ago as they were being discontinued. I was on the practice green with him recently, the first time we've been together on the golf course in years and I saw he still had Molitors. I was surprised he still had them and he told me he bought the new release, just as he ran out of the old stash. Apparently it's become a "thing" amongst his friends, who have been harassing him to switch to a "real" brand for years.

The Wilson FG Tour was a great ball.  My bag was the version after, or a couple after the "X" came out (black and gold box). Wilson was sending them out as "proto B' before they came to market. I think the only places to buy them since then are the Wilson website and at affiliated pro shops.

Great short game feel and spin and I liked the lower, flatter trajectory. Similar to the Bridgestone "HydroCore" B330, another underrated ball perhaps.
