Most Underrated Ball You Ever Played?

BeerPerHole

Recommended Posts

An orange Wilson Chaos that I found and played with for four rounds was without a doubt the most underrated ball I've ever used.  I lost it when it rolled off a baked out fairway on a tight par 5 tee shot and I still can't believe I couldn't find it.  Had Chaos on it like spray paint.  Looking back it was a huge sign that I need a low spin ball.  I can't spin anything anyway.  Not on purpose.

I absolutely used to love the Nike Tour Accuracy TW edition.  Great balls.

Made by Bridgestone. Same ball as the Bridgestone Tour Premium LS

Nike Mojo was the ball I played in high school, and miss the most. Not even close to the spin of a tour ball being a simple two piece, but I still miss the way they felt off an iron.

The Hogan Hawk ball. It was really really good. It just never caught on.. I would say it was the budget premium ball before the budget premium ball..

The longest ball I ever hit was the Titleist Gran Z (GranZ). I think they were only released in Asia - I heard they might have been same as the "NXT Tour" relased in America.

With that said, none of the NXT Tours I hit over the years were as long as that Gran Z I played. I am convinced they were non-conforming I was hitting them so far. Not sure about that though.

Agreed on the GranZ.  No way were those things legal.

I also enjoyed this ball.  The mid compression felt great for my game.  I still am using some Nike PD Long I had stashed.  Perfect feel for me.

A few years back, Callaway released a 3 piece ionomer ball under the Strata brand called Tour Advanced.  I loved that they had a minimalist clean logo and design and they could usually be found for around $15.99/dz on ebay which was often better that what the Top Flite Gamer sold for at GG (unless there was a buy 2 dz for $XX special).  I gamed that ball until the Top Flite Gamer Soft came out and I played that ball exclusively for 2 1/2 full seasons.

It's odd that the Gamer Soft was never replaced.

Agreed.  I can't speak for other GG and DSG but the ones by me were selling more of the Gamer Soft than standard Gamer.  I haven't been a fan of the last couple Gamer releases. With all these direct to consumer ball companies out there I wouldn't be surprised if the Top Flite series is scaled way back in the next couple years.  I think GG/Dicks want to have some presence for the occasional golfer but I think they are losing the value conscious regular golfer to these direct brands like Vice, Snell, Cut, OnCore, etc.

The Top Flite Tour circa 2002.  Ball I was using the first time I ever broke 80.

In many ways the 1980's Titleist DT was underrated for me.  I was playing junior golf at the time and that was my ball of choice because I couldn't afford balatas and everybody else was using balatas.  Looking back the DT was just a far better performing golf ball and it put me at the advantage.

The Snell MTB-X is a big time performer with its distance off the tee and high spin on wedges. I've decided to go away from it though becauseI find it a bit hard to control and my home course is extremely punishing on missed shots.

I also feel that the Srixon Z-Star doesn't get it's due either.

The Wilson Prostaff 360 from 10 or 12 years ago.  So long I had people ask me if it was non-conforming.  A later version, the Wilson SL9000, had the same dimple pattern and was just as good as the Prostaff.

I played in a scramble and got a sleeve of those Strata balls.  Liked them a lot.  Found the RockBottomGolf booth at a golf show and they had 6 dozen left for $7 each.  Have 2 dozen left that I'll use now and then.

I read the new Gamer at Dicks/GG is supposed to be like the OG Gamer we all loved.

Going in a different direction with this, but to me the most under rated ball out now is the new Titleist Tour Soft.  They won't get much love due to being way overpriced, BUT I was given a dozen at a tournament, and can't stop using them.  Shot my personal best in the next round I played them.  I was about to just put them in my shag bag, but thought I would try them 1 round.  3 rounds later, and while they are not as long for me off the tee as a prov1x my iron shots into the green have never been better.  I am so straight with them, and can take dead aim at the flag.  I can't really comment on spin when chipping with them since I like to bump and run most of my short game shots anyway.  But so far if score is any indication its a great ball for my game.

My regular ball is the Q Star Tour but used to play the Gamer Soft in cooler weather.  Picked up a couple boxes of the Top Flite Hammer Control to see if they’d play similar to the GS or D2 Feel (another great cool weather ball) and they’re really good!  I doubt I’ll switch over full time to the Hammer Control but it’s my winter ball for sure.
