New Titleist Driver in the works?

TS4 kicked my M5 out this month. Been thinking of taking my bag in an all titleist direction for awhile now. Flashy stuff is starting to get old.

@SUPERG I remember you mentioning possibly going all Titleist before and at the moment they are making incredible gear. I was not looking for all of the Titleist gear I currently have, it just happened that way during fittings. I'm a set of irons away from being all Titleist as well. It might just happen soon as I'm very enamored with a set of cb's. The TS line of woods is my favorite to date. Love how square the TS3 driver sets up. As mentioned above, I also really like the fact that they don't have a carbon crown like every other driver OEM. Sometimes, simplicity is best.

I agree the gear is great!!! I’m pretty close as well to an all Titleist bag but with all the custom orders on hold I figure I’ll wait. Irons and fairway are the only 2 spots that need updating. Just could not get along with the Ts 3 woods for some reason! Hoping the next line I can fit into better.

Ian Fraser had some early insight on today's TXG live (see 6:30 mark in link below).

Clearly he couldn't divulge everything he knew, but he did say..."We can tell you there's a new weighting system... it won't be the same composition as the last one..."

Ian also said Titleist have used lockdown to do a lot of initial testing with staff players and "we should see samples in a month".

The comment about composition is interesting, it could mean the lineup of four heads could change, or it could mean actual material changes from an all titanium head to a composite head.

It took it as moving away from Titanium. I personally like a composite head when done correctly. The 2016 M2 is still my favorite feeling driver of all time.

And the Cobra drivers were a STEAL this past weekend with the 45% off coupons that kept popping up. F9 drivers for $137 and Speedzone drivers for $247 straight from the Cobra website! Not to mention irons, wedges, & accessories. That was a killer deal.

 

Cant wait for new releases to start dropping again. I’m not even looking to buy. But it’s a always cool to see what companies come up with.

The TS woods are still as good as anything out there. They are never going to get involved in the gimmicky marketing that Callaway and Taylormade do.

You're joking, right? Pretty much ANYTHING that TaylorMade has ever put in an ad has been gimmick...'ier'. By at least 17 yards...'ier'. Their marketing is a big reason I don't own any TaylorMade clubs. I can't stand it. And Cally has used that as the playbook to build their driver empire. TaylorMade makes great equipment, but their marketing campaigns have bordered on insulting. They're the reason that people were joking a few years ago that - if you listen to TaylorMade, we should all be driving it 400 yards by now.

 

I would have been really sad if Titleist moved their entire driver line to carbon composite before the SIM came out. The SIM is the first driver with comp. construction that sounds amazing and proved you can do it with carbon. So if Titleist does it and retains the sound and feel, I'll be all in on that.

I was simply asking for an example not joking at all... So, the T400 have zero marketing gimmick to them?? The TS standing for Titleist Speed project is no gimmick? The T100S line with stronger lofts than the standard T100? Titleist has their gimmicks as well. They are just more understated than others.

The 17 yards thing was almost 10 years ago now. I have not seen any such claims but any company lately..

I am a bit confused by what you said below. None of it is correct. Unless I am missing something.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but Titleist have used "gimmicky" marketing too. Just the latest was comparing the Tour Soft to TP5, Chrome Soft, and Bridgestone RXS. All of those balls are urethance covered high spining balls. The Tour Soft is not urethane covered, it is a low compression low spin distance ball. They all use gimmicky marketing.

My apologies, that sounded harsh and I didn't mean it to. The point I was trying to articulate is that, actual print literature aside, we all remember the intense release cycle that TaylorMade used and the constant claims that each was so much better than the last. That's the part that I have the hardest time with as I personally believe it's had a fairly negative effect on certain aspects of the industry.

I don't believe I said anything that isn't correct as it's just my opinion, I think I just worded that statement poorly. I was glad that Titleist hadn't continued down the composite driver path because of the way their drivers looked, sounded and felt. Enter the SIM, and there's finally a composite driver in the market that sounds amazing. If Titleist can emulate their sound and feel with composite materials, that's something I'd look at.

Gotcha. Like I said, I was not sure I understood. There is 100% some bad history for TM. They had crazy release cycles and bold claims. I think they have very much gotten away from much of that are in position to make some very good moves. The SIM is currently the hottest selling driver on the market. Callaway held that position for a number of years.

Titleist, just does Titleist. Meaning they very much tend to stay in their lane. As someone else put it in another thread. They are a ball company that makes clubs. I think a composite Titleist driver could be very cool. I would love to see it and see it perform well.

They tried it with the 909 DComp and immediately abandoned ship on the composites. That was 12 years ago and with technology advancing quicker than we can keep up, it's just a whole different ball game in 2020 so it will be interesting for sure.

 

To be sure, my distaste for TaylorMade isn't based on the quality of the product. They make excellent equipment and there is simply no way to argue that. And that is despite my terrible luck with the M2 line breaking when it was released, which was my last foray into the TMag world. I've hit the SIM, and it's pure class as far as performance is concerned.

Awesome. Titleist in many ways is a good gauge of golf. When Titleist puts out some awesome stuff you know it is going to be a good year. I don't they they have released anything that made a splash since the original Ap2 irons. Those were a big deal.

Sounds like Ping will be the last major OEM standing with an all titanium head. At least we are still calling them woods, which is nice.

Keep in mind that the materials used are not as important than the reason they are being used. The purpose of using carbon composites in a club head is to reduce weight in specific lower stress areas for either redistribution elsewhere or total weight reduction. However, it takes a large amount of weight movement to create a noticeable impact on the CG of a club head and that becomes even more true as the boundaries get smaller (hence the reason why composites are used much less in fairways and hybrids). Today titanium can be effectively cast much thinner than 20 years ago to the point that the difference in weight is negligible in most cases vs carbon composite (or at least not enough to make a big enough difference in CG to see any kind of performance gain for most golfers). This along with the added point of failure at the joint (adhering carbon composite to metal < welding two pieces of metal) are likely why we have not seen Titleist or Ping revisit composite crowns since their respective flops over a decade ago (ultimately the material benefit does not outweigh the costs).

That's a very good point. The trouble I referred to with the M2 series were the 3 woods caving in on the face, one cracking toe-side on the carbon seam and another cracking in the centre of that same seam on top. I have trust issues with TaylorMade woods.

That was my inkling as well. The suggestion of a composite head also fits with what Ian said about them going to a new weighting system. Composite materials means redistribution of weight, which seems to go hand-in-hand with them going to a new weighting system.

I talked to a Titleist rep today and he basically confirmed drivers to replace the TS2 and TS3 as well as fairway wood replacements...also another interesting thing he dropped...Titleist May be thinking of moving their hybrid release to go with the woods instead of the irons, which means replacements for the TS hybrids from last year which I think are unreal and I wasn’t a huge hybrid guy before that.

Love TS3 and don't really want the next one to change all that much, but would like a better sound just to be picky. Shape is perfect so hopefully they don't mess with that.

There is an acoustic benefit (to some) as well. Carbon changes the sound of the driver, more thud then ting.

Yeah one thing that a lot of people miss is that you can't simply throw on a carbon crown. There's additional "stuff" to bond it to the titanium body that basically negates the weight savings from the crown itself.
