Rogue or Mavrik Driver

Currently looking to upgrade my XR16 to either the Rogue or Mavrik

Struggling to find any direct comparison between the two on YouTube

Anyone that has played the Rogue and has moved on to Mavrik and felt it’s been an worthwhile upgrade?

I could obviously save a bit of money going with the Rogue and I actually like the larger head of the Rogue compared to the standard Mavrik.

It is well worth the extra $$$$ to upgrade to the Mavrik over the Rogue. My gamer was the Rogue SZ until earlier this year. The Mavrik sounds better and is longer. Rougue SZ is now my backup driver.

If you wanted to try out the Mavrik GlobalGolf has a "TRY BEFORE YOU BUY" program. For $25 (includes shipping charges) per club you can test out a number of different drivers, hybrids, wedges, and putters for up to 2 weeks. If you don't like the club just send it back and you're done. If you decide to buy the $25 goes towards the payment of the club. Pretty cool program for not much investment to trail clubs to make sure they are the right one for you. The only downside is that they don't always have available all of the stock options. HTH and best of luck!

Didn't Matty @ TXG hit the Rogue and Mavrik sub zero and measure ball speeds within 1 mph? :) He's a high speed player of course, but do not sleep on the Rogue. Its an underrated club and a good value. If you were to compare it, you may want to also look at the Mav Max as its head is a bit larger/longer ala rogue.

Heck, the XR16 is a good good club. IMHO you are getting better ball speeds on misses with the newer faces/designs but if you center it well the XR16 is not going to be shorter by anything meaningful.

Finding comparo's more then 2 generations apart is really rare. Rick Shiels did a 5 years of Cally drivers in 2017, which is close but doesn't give you the last 3 clubs just OG Epic. Your XR did quite well :D

If the goal was: I want a newer jailbreak Cally with more forgiveness but I only have $200 or less to spend, then Rogue is a great value.

For me, middle it and it and I have not seen any real difference to date with a Rogue vs EF (I do have 1 year of time with the Rogue, only a month with EF before shutdown). When I get a chance to demo the Mavrik later this year outdoors with a LM, I expect it to sound great, perform great, but in the end it won't leave a $500 hole in my pocket. 2021 and CPO is a different story as that EF is a juicy piece of trade in meat for me.

Rogue all the way. I've hit both and get after the ball and didn't see much difference. Not to mention I got a mint Rogue SZ in BST with upgraded extra stiff shaft for $150 and it was mint.

Hated the Rogue. Had the driver and 3 wood. Really liked the 3 wood. Hated the driver. I came from GBB Epic and Epic SZ and had Big Bertha Alpha DBD before those. Callaway tried to talk me into a Callaway Epic Flash SZ but decided to go back to Ping.

I would skip the Rogue and go to a Mavrik or Epic Flash

Interested and if people tried both the standard and max in the Mavrik when demoing and which one you went for?

i see a lot of positive reviews on the max but as my bad shot is a pull to the left and the max being draw bias I am thinking it may not suit.

Unable to demo at the moment due to lockdown but will hopefully get a chance soon

I own both the std Mav (10.5*) and the Mav Max (9* and 10.5*), but the 10.5* Max will be gone at some point as the 9* has plenty of launch on its own. I've had limited testing and gaming time with anything due to Covid. I took the 9* Max and 10.5* Mav heads with me on a golf trip right before Covid, and I really enjoyed both. I leaned Max, and played that more often, but I still played well with the std Mav.

To your point about draw bias with the Max, you can really play around with that. You can put a heavy weight in the back, and a light weight in the heel, to reduce any draw bias. You can open the face by lowering the loft. I have tested out a number of settings with my Max, and -1 definitely causes me to hit fades (not my goal).

I played a round this past weekend with the 9* Max in the bag, with a 10g weight in the back, 6g weight in the heel (16g total for D2 SW), and S/D setting. Hit some beautiful drives early on, then started to fade a bit as can happen with me. For my next round, I am going with the 10g weight in the heel, and 6g in the back, at either S/D, +1/N or +1/D. Bottom line, there is a ton of customization available with the Max, to favor certain shot shapes. But do not assume it is crazy draw biased, because I have not found that. Heck of a driver though, as is the standard. YMMV.

As noted, move the weights and you have more of a neutral driver. You are going to have to hit both preferably with some LM to see spin numbers. One may work better for your swing clearly with spin, or if they spin close you may prefer the look of one slightly over the other. On paper, the max should spin a smidge more but everyone is different.

Gamed a standard Rogue a couple years ago. Mavrik SZ for me is better. Both feel great. My miss is high toe and Mavrik SZ is just incredible in that regard. Only 9 rounds in this year so far, but my driving is better than it’s been for 6 years. Very pleased with the Mavrik.

Tried to buy the Mavrik when it came in but couldn't get the same ball speed as my rogue. Brought the rogue in to compare when I was wanting to purchase but was consistently 1-2 mph more with the rogue all through the testing, trying multiple Mavrik heads. Maybe I lucked out and got a bit hotter head in the rogue. Didn't save any money that day though. Bought a couple putters instead lol.

Rogue SZ head shape is amazing to me. Absolutely bombing it. Just don't see how anyone could pay $500 for the Mavrik when they have the same numbers.

Most of the reviews you find out there, even from people trying to sell clubs, is that if you have a properly fit driver, you probably arent going to see much in it release to release. After 4 to 5 years is generally when you cam start to see the additional benefits, and probably time to be re-fit anyway.

Agree. My Ping I20 is still crazy long for a club that released in 2012.

Yeah TXG did a video regarding this topic comparing Rogue sz to Mav sz and his results were very similar. I would have to imagine Mav sub zero would have a little more forgiveness, but I haven’t hit any Maverick head. Rogue sz with the heavier weight in the back is more stable than most would think, I gamed it since it came out and currently giving the flash sz a trial run with a different shaft. Standard Maverick vs standard Rogue seems to go to the Maverick according to most people that I have seen reviews for.

I cracked the head of my Rogue Subzero so I went ahead and upgraded to the Mavrik Subzero. During a demo day (and before the Rogue cracked) I literally had the same carry and rollout numbers. For some reason I could just never find the center of the club face of the Mavrik once I made the change. I ended up lining it up off of the heel to find the center of the club and couldn't do it. Went to CPO and picked up a "like new" Rogue and once it arrived I was back to the old me.

Hard to explain but it just didn't work for me.

If you are looking for a draw biased or closed face, any sub zero club is not going to be for you. Just an fyi. Personally I find the Rogue sub zero to be slightly more fade biased than flash sub zero, again I haven’t hit any Maverick head. I found OG Epic sz to be a bit more neutral/tiny draw bias compared to Rogue sz. The Callaway standard Rogue, standard Maverick would fit more for what it sounds like you want, obviously Maverick max is most draw biased/closed face.

I hear ya, that rogue sz is def a low spin head, and with so little backspin to stabilize the ball flight, tee shots can get away from you real easy.

Saw your comment on the other thread about the SZ not working yet for you. Sure the weight can go forward but the change in forgiveness you must be ready for. Have you tried it with the heavy weight back as well?

If hitting a 7.5 too high, perhaps some LM time as well to look at the numbers and why you are presenting an impact to cause higher spinners (AoA, path/face etc..)

My PING I20 driver sits completely square to almost open a tad. I have a Proforce V2 76 gram extra stiff shaft in it and loved it. Just thought it was time for some new tech. I replied to your post about your Rogue SZ. I would try the D setting and +1/+2 before you give up on it. Mine was on D/+2 when I first received it and the toe was closed significantly.

I went from Rogue SZ to Mavrik SZ. A few important things factored into that.

1.) I got fitted for both. For the most part I was very happy with the Rogue SZ. The only thing I never fully liked was it always appeared to sit open to me. I also had it set at 8*.

2.) I was at the PGA show in January and happened to hit the Mavrik SZ while I was at the Graphite Design booth at demo day, and between their shaft and the new head, I feel in love.

3.) Once finally compared on a trackman here in MN at 2nd Swing, the Mavrik SZ was a much better driver for me. And as many have pointed out, the sound is dramatically better. Although to be fair, the sound of the Rogue never really bothered me. It wasn't as loud as the Epic Flash, but the Mavrik SZ is a much more muted 'thwack' sound at impact.

As always, use other videos for guidance, but it can't be overstated enough - head and shaft combos matter. If you don't get fitted, properly fitted, by in large it doesn't matter what you're playing. You're leaving better results on the table somewhere (Distance, Dispersion, Overall Confidence, etc).
