What Would You Shoot if You Dropped a Ball at 95 Yards COF on Every Hole at Your Home Course?

Love it! Thanks for sharing! Could you estimate how far you were on each shot, like I did, above? Would be really good to know what you average distance to the hole was. :-)

Excellent! Thanks! On the holes where you missed the green, try to estimate how far away you were.

Ok. Did this today, albeit for only nine holes. It’s all I had time for.

54 wedge hit green 33 ft from pin 2 putt 54 wedge hit green 27 ft from pin 2 putt54 wedge hit green 42 ft from pin 2 putt54 wedge hit green 12 ft from pin 2 putt54 wedge hit green 4 ft from pin 1 putt54 wedge hit green 21 ft from pin 2 putt54 wedge hit green 12 ft from pin 2 putt54 wedge hit green 21 ft from pin 2 putt54 wedge hit green 14 feet from pin 2 puttSo, a grand total of 26 strokes with all nine greens hit and an average of 20.7 feet from the hole. 17 total putts.

For background I am currently a 2.9 handicap and have been as low as 0.9. I would classify myself as a good “club” player just a tier under those that qualify for state mid-ams and such

I'll probably try this at some point this season. I don't expect to shoot really well, but I'll set a goal of 5 over for 18. Courses around me are generally pretty packed right now, so not sure when I'll be able to try it.

Thank you for this thread @Obee.

I’ve been out there the past 2 days playing 9 trying to plug it in from 100 yards and this is no joke. I only landed 1 out of 9 the first day and 3 out of 9 yesterday.

I love this practice and would have never guessed how weak I was from 95.

Im trying different clubs as well from PW to 60* since 1 club wasn’t working and It’s opened my eyes.

YES!!!

That is definitely what this thread is about. :-) If you can't consistently wedge the ball with a short, heavy club, how can you possibly expect to be consistent with a longer, lighter club?

Improving your wedge play -- assuming you are able to do it -- will absolutely help you improve your PW - 7i play also

Monterey Park 9 hole was in good condition, but I was playing in some rain(which I do not mind at all)... small greens so up are down's are not as hard as other places.

below is my score:

1) 103 yards 60* full shot missed short + chip on to 8’ + 2 putts= 4

2) 98 yards PW on to 8’ + 2 putts= 3

3) 105 yards 56* missed short + chip on to 4" + 1 put= 3

4) 102 yards PW on to 10’ + 2 putts= 3

5) 103 yards 56 missed left pin high + chipped on to 2’ + 1 putt= 3

6) 94 yards 56* missed right + (steep side hill lie) chipped over the green + chipped to 3’ + 1 putt= 4

7) 92 yards 56* missed short + chipped on to 2’ + 2 putt= 4

8) 111 yards PW missed left + chipped to 20’ + 2 putt= 4

9) 108 yards PW missed over + chip landed on short rough 1 ball distances away from fringe and just stopped! + chip to 6’ + 2 putt= 5

I want to try this once a week.

I just want to make sure I don't need to cry and/or pray for you. Did you mean to use the indicator for feet ( ' ) for all of your putts, or did you properly use the indicator for inches ( " ) to indicate the length of your putts? For example, did you two-putt from 8' (feet) on hole #1 or did you two-putt from 8" (inches) on hole #1? If the former, that makes sense. If the latter, you are deadly with your wedges, but you really need some work on your putting.

been out 4 times this week to play 9- grinding 100 yards. I drive the ball and if there is 170 left, I swing my 60* (70 yards to center of fw) to get the ball 100 yards to the flag and play the game. SM7s are selling for $100 so I purchased a 54* with the highest bounce I could find. 54.14F - I really appreciate this club.

Played 9 today and below is the results:

1) 103 yards- 54* missed right + chipped to 1’ + 1 putt= 3

2) 100 yards- 54* to 10' + 2 putts= 3

3) 94 yards- 54* to 8' + 2 putts= 3

4) 109 yards- 54* missed right + chipped to 2’ + 1 putt= 3

5) 92 yards- 54* missed short + chipped on to 14’ + 2 putts= 4 note: this hole is a 160y par 3.. the fairway starts at 80 yards to the pin, but since i was enjoying the 54* so much, I hit it out of rough with the 54* which cost me. Next time, I will use a PW.. lesson learned.

6) 101 yards- 54* missed right + chipped to 1’ + 1 putt= 3

7) 92 yards- 54* to 2’ + 1 putt= 2

8) 95 yards- 54* missed over + duffed a chipped + chipped to 7' + 2 putt= 5

9) 94 yards 54* to 7’ + 2 putt= 3

I'm changing my wedge set up to the below yardages:

PW 120 - 100

54*14F 110 - 80 (but i will aim for even lower, I want to be able to take this club as low as green side chips)

60.12D 85 down.

my take away: get the easiest club that I can swing to hit a specific yardage... Im replacing my 4i for a hybrid.

I finally got the opportunity to do this today and shot -1 as a 15.8 index. I was down to -3 at one point, but messed up a few holes. My home course was semi-flooded when we showed up for our Sunday game so I went to a course up the hill a few miles away that I've never played and was able to get out. In addition to not knowing the course, the fog was so heavy for the first 6 holes I could only make out the green from 95 yards after I walked up and figured out where it was. Since the fog was so thick I started off taking the total yardage, subtracting 100 yards, and then playing a club that would get me to 100 yards in 2 shots on a par 4 or 3 shots on a par 5, usually a 6i, 7i, or 8i. It was working well enough that I pretty much used that method the entire round and kept myself out of trouble.

Takeaways:

- Absent any forced carries requiring a driver or 4w, there's no reason I (or pretty much anyone for that matter) should ever shoot worse than +18 unless I'm just having a horrible day.

- I have too large a gap between my 44 degree PW and my 48 degree AW (which I really already knew). I may need to get the loft checked/adjusted on my AW.

- I'm pretty decent at 2-putting from ~30', but I need to get better at 1-putting from 5'.

- I need to get my approach shots closer to the pin if I want to score better from 100 yards and in.

- I need to manage my misses better to avoid things like the unplayable on 13 below.

1 aw left bunker, 15', 1'

2 aw front center, 35', 2'

3 aw back right, 12' (-1)

4 aw short front, 3' above (-2)

5 aw front center, 24' below, 1'

6 aw thin hop hit pin, 2' (-3)

7 skipped due to traffic (assume par)

8 aw front center, 37' below, 2'

9 aw front center, 40' below, 6' below, 1 (-2)

10 aw thin bounced over, chip 4' past. 4'

11 pw long left, chip, 4' below

12 pw downhill lie to elevated green bounced off pin high right, 4' (-3)

13 pw left in a bush, drop, aw, 8' below, 1' (-1)

14 aw short, 52 6' past, 6' above

15 pw cog, 8', 1'

16 pw center back, 28', 2'

17 pw front right, 32', 1'

18 pw cog, 4', 0.5'

If we ever play together Obee, it’s definitely going to be on a 7,000+ yard course. Playing against you from 100 and in is essentially just giving money away.

Beautiful wedge swing.

I watched 3. I only needed to watch 1 though to tell that I don’t want to have a 100 yard and in match with you. And I think I’m good from that range.

All these people saying they’re playing 58 and 60’s from 100 yards, I want to play them. 100 yard shots are all about controlling trajectory and spin. Not sure how you do that with a full swing 60 unless you’re downwind or landing the ball past the pin.

When I was younger, my 56 was my 105 to 112 Club. I had much more clubhead speed and I absolutely spun the ball a ton, but I also hit the ball low, so the ball would skip, then dig.

The key was to know what type of green you were dealing with that day. Would the ball skip forward 5 to 15 yards before putting on the brakes? Or would it dig on impact? If it dug on impact, I used to frequently throw the ball behind pins and spin it back to the hole. I just can't do that anymore because a) I lack the clubhead speed; and b) the modern ball spins less. But it was a great shot to have in the bag back in the day. :-)
