Summer Golf Passes - Phoenix

Obviously, with our crazy summer temperatures, Phoenix golf courses are desperate for customers in the summer months.

I noticed that We-Ko-Pa has a deal that lets you play for $35 a round all summer after buying a $75 summer pass, with no booking fees, etc., and every sixth round is free.

Does anyone know of any other courses in metro Phoenix that offer similar deals?

Totally different caliber of courses than WeKoPa, but Wigwam and Biltmore sell a 6-round pass good any day/time at either facility that's basically works out to $24/round with cart plus some other freebies/discounts. I just received an email about it today, and have purchased it in past years to play Wigwam. That being said, the past couple of summers the Wigwam courses have been in ratty condition.

The complaint I've heard in past years about the We-Ko-Pa summer pass is that by the time you get to the 4-day advance booking window, there are hardly any early weekend morning tee times left, even for a single or twosome. It's still probably worth it if you only use it a few times, but I wouldn't buy it expecting to tee it up on Saguaro every Sat-Sun morning all summer long.

I think Troon still has a summer card as well. No idea what the price is but if you want to play mostly those courses that might be a decent way to go.

There are also a few private clubs that do summer memberships (or at least do them a lot of years). Not sure who will this summer but in the past it been places like Moon Valley and Tatum Ranch.

Thanks for the summer memperships info, az2au.

Good call on the tee time difficulty, Bonneville. I don't have many golfing buddies in the metro Phoenix area, so I was hoping to regularly be added to groups as a single, but I could definitely see that tee sheet utterly swamped in the summer, given the quality of the course, its location near well-off Scottsdale, and the very low prices.

2020 AZ Summer Card | Troon.comTroon Summer card is good through the end of August. $99 for a twosome, $139 for a foursome. Up to 50% off rates, some 2 for 1 deals. 10% off pro shop and restaurant. Some good courses on there. If you play Troon North 2-3 times, my guess would be it pays for itself. I haven't purchased this one before.

Just a point of clarification because I think this is what you meant...

Courses overseed in Sep/Oct. They transition grasses in the summer. Often with a spray kill of the seasonal rye. If I recall correctly (and this is where I could definitely be wrong), last year courses at lower elevations had a terrible set of weather conditions to deal with and that made the transition tough to get right. Again, I could be wrong but last year it was historically cool late into May (look at Memorial Day temps). Seems like we even had some odd rain as well.

Yes, was referring to rye to bermuda. Guess I should have used "transition" instead of "overseed." I'm obviously not a golf course agronomist. Temps were in the 90's last summer well into June. Some nicer courses that are normally in phenomenal shape (Troon North & Ak Chin Southern Dunes) jumped the gun and transitioned to bermuda too early and their tracks were basically ruined for the summer. If I recall correctly, Troon North shut down Monument for a while because it got so bad. I remember playing the Pinnacle course and there were lots of areas that were pretty barren. It feels like we're having similar head fake type weather so far with temps in the 100's for a week and now dipping back into the 90's. We'll see if that extends towards Memorial Day.

Tatum Ranch has a deal that is, well, a screaming’ deal.

$1500 for May through September(until overseed) gets you one of the better conditioned clubs around.

Now is about when courses start to transition to the Bermuda. Here's the problem with overseeding every year, the Bermuda gets weaker over time. Tourists want green though so all public and the vast majority of private courses overseed every year. It makes a huge difference to give the course a rest and make sure you kill all of the rye that somehow survives and the poa that will build up over time. If you keep your Bermuda healthy you'll never have a bad transition but... alas, people somehow think dormant Bermuda doesn't play (it is actually a blast) because it isn't green. I get it but also wish we could have everyone play a few rounds on the brown stuff. If it were up to me we'd never overseed but I can certainly live with the compromise of dormant every 5-6 years as well because it still means summer conditions are great without fail.

I played a course in Tucson which had about 3 holes dormant. Did not know why. Now it makes sense. They probably don’t want the whole course brown, but golfers will not quibble much about 3 holes every year.

What I am curious about is how dormant bermuda fairways would hold up to the packed tee sheets and 90%+ cart use that a lot of the public courses here receive in the winter. I just think of how the dormant rough at the public courses with a lot of play gets matted down and worn to the compacted dirt in many areas by around February. I would think it's easier to maintain reasonable conditions (i. e. not like playing off asphalt, the grass still having a little height) at a private club with fewer rounds and more walkers.

I've played quite a bit on dormant Zoysia fairways in Missouri and they seemed to hold up well to cart traffic while providing a good playing surface...I feel like dormant bermuda might be less "durable"?

Personally I don't care about the color of the grass, I'm fine with firm and fast, just not hitting off hardpan on every shot and constantly jarring my wrists.

I certainly would think you would but acknowledge everyone is different. Condition wise things changed massively a few years back. Simply put...we got a well. The ability to water as needed rather than as budget allows is a massive benefit in the valley.

Call Charly, the young lady membership director and see what is available. I believe summer membership may still be available but they are limited. If you decide to try it for the summer let her know I sent you.
