Rory/DJ vs Fowler/Wolff on TV May 17 (NO POLITICS, COVID-19 POSTS)

Seminole would blow from the air, I’ll probably be proved wrong just from looking at the weather forecast (rain Thursday, Friday, Saturday and match is Sunday) but it’ll be greener than normal most likely. If it was regular conditions, you’d see it on tv and go “ew my local municipal is greener” but that is the beauty of it though, doesn’t look like much but the more you play and see it the better it gets.

Well said Lark.So cute, Jack finished 2nd and 3rd a bunch of times and guess what? Quite a few were blown opportunities, not roaring comebacks. Rory has won four...only 19 in history have more.

I've heard that Lucas Glover (a Tour player whom I have always liked) said after a recent round at Seminole that "It's just pitch and putt."

I cannot find any provenance for that quote; and I do not want to misquote him or wrongfully drag him into a bigger controversy.  As I say, I like Lucas Glover and have nothing against him.  Worst of all, what he says may have some truth to it.  I don't think that he meant to insult Seminole, but if the quote is true, it is a hard lesson in how a truly great course -- Top 10 in the world on basically everybody's list(s) -- has been obsoleted by modern equipment in the hands of Tour players.

Match play disguises some of the problems.  So we see courses like NGLA, Seminole, Chicago GC, and CPC used as match play venues.  All architectural gems.  All basically unfit for a medal play national championship.

Never know. He could pull a VJ and play the KF tour event. He is eligible.

I’m with you on that one. This whole majors are all that matters hype is relatively new. They used to be important but not be all end all. There are outliers but most players tend to have a 5-1 to 10-1 ratio of wins to majors. It’s truly amazing that a Moody, Micheel type ever wins a major with this mythical massive pressure at a major compared to regular events. Then we have posters that will deride a Rory or DJ for a second place finish but celebrate Jack having a slew of seconds and thirds. With the number of Jacks’s seconds and thirds if a modern player had his numbers the media would certainly declare him goat.....but add stories about....just imagine if he was a good closer!

Yes. One of the bad storms from a few years ago left it underwater. They have lost some trees from time to time, etc.

But the old Mizner clubhouse has never been knocked down, and the real essence of Seminole is the routing and shaping (along with fastidious turfgrass management and a membership that includes the highest-level executives in the USGA).

It is nearly as impervious to wind and water damage as is a links course like Ross’ beloved Dornoch.

Mythical as compared to other large events? Yes. I’ll stand by that. Any player that is standing on the tee thinking”omg, its a major and they’re so hard” probably has nothing to play for because he’s way out of contention. Any player thinking about the moment has no chance. And that is true every week. These days with million dollar first place prizes every week a win would be life changing for a struggling pro. And if he thinks about that he’ll lose.

Not thinking about the moment on the 72nd hole with a chance to win a major is the only thing mythical as in it doesn’t happen. That’s what makes them majors, their importance to the history of the game and the record books. Sorry but ask ANYONE if they’d trade winning their players for a PGA and you’re going to get a 100% yes without a doubt. Why is that?

Bermuda’s. Greens are Tifeagle and fairways are celebration. Paspalum would be a little too sticky for Seminole (not a lot of bounce and roll), plus as dry and firm as the members like it Localized Dry Spot (LDS) would be a huge problem with paspalum because it takes a day to happen and 6 months to get rid of (slight exaggeration but you get the point, bermuda holds up a lot better).

You’re probably right, heck I’ll just agree. That said I don’t think the pressure, which I thought we were discussing, is more t the major.

one stroke lead in your hands on the 17th tee. Do you want to be playing Sawgrass or Hazeltine. Based on your comments Hazeltine is a more difficult task?

Just read that the players are going to carry or push cart their own bags, and can use range finders. Heck, I hope they wear shorts as well.

This just got more interesting.

Heck, at this point I'd watch Rory hammer on roof shingles.

Claude Harmon the golf pro at Seminole in the 1940s and 50s still has the course record of 60. My uncle Toney Penna played with Clyde that day (circa 1947) and also had a great round of 63 I believe there was a hurricane within days of their playing. I think the course they played was over 6800 yards.

The locker room is one of the world's best. All the winners of the pro am are emblazoned on the walls. The 1938 event was won by Toney and his partner,Edward F Hutton ,. Hutton had a home in Palm Beach, called Mar Lago. Donald Triump purchased and renovated the property from the town because it cost a million dollars a year and was unoccupied for years.

In my opinion it is the most difficult course that I have seen from 100 yards into the green. Few trees and sparse rough are offset by mega fast greens and shifting winds. The spray of the Atlantic may hit you on a few holes. Even though your tee shot may be in the fairway, you have no chance for a birdie unless you are on the correct side of the fairway.

Charley Penna
