Damaged Tip Removing Adapter

I was trying to remove a Cobra adapter and apparently applied too much heat and frayed the tip of an Atmos TS Black about 1" up from the tip. Correct me if I'm wrong, but cutting that much off will increase the flex among other things? Once I 'm able to use it again, if I find out it plays too stiff for me, is the only option I have to weaken the shaft applying weight to the driver head? Thanks

If you frayed it an inch up, I would say that shaft is toast and now a cool looking alignment stick.

A picture? An inch up, meaning, you're cutting 1 1/2" -2" off the shaft? Could become a 3 wood or a 5 wood shaft if that's the case. But, won't be a driver shaft anymore

When removing adapters, I find a micro-torch is far easier for keeping the heat application under control. Hot air blows everywhere, but that torch is pin-point accurate. Put that heat gun back on the shelf.

A picture I doubt will show anything. I can grab the tip and when I apply slight pressure, I can see the fibers flex and I only need to cut 1" off to remove the weakened area.

I was going to cut 3/4" off the butt end to get it to my normal playing length, so now no need to do that. Having said all that, you guys still think the shaft is toast? Thanks

I did use a small torch unfortunately. This was only the 2nd time I've removed an adapter, I think I did get a little too much heat, but the killer now that I think more about it was I twisted the tip.

OH CRAP! Yeah, NEVER twist with a graphite shaft. Sure death if you do.

Yes, a proper puller or shaft extractor is always needed for graphite.

But it also means that the actual damage could be a lot worse than just what you can see. So while it may not necessarily be toast, trying to use the shaft even after trimming will certainly be risky.

You can try to tip trim the inch. But, if you twisted the adapter while pulling you might have unseen damage.

Thats already a stout/low shaft. Tipping 1" or more is pretty intense. I would make it a 5w shaft and call it a day, it's donezo.

Removing 1" and keeping it in the driver isnt going to 'move it up a flex' but it will lower the ball flight and that shaft is already the lowest low/low in the Fuji line up.

Also adding headweght does not 'weaken' a shaft.

There are a lot of different ways we can define the stiffness of a shaft and the answer depends on which one you might use. But adding head weight will certainly make the shaft seem softer or less stiff to the person swinging it, and that's all that really matters in the context of how good a fit the shaft might be. That's exactly why one typically tip trims for fairways vs driver, to account for the extra head weight. Of course, how much weight needs to be added before one will feel a change in the shaft is a different question.

Correct. What I meant was adding head weight doesnt move you down a flex, just like tip trimming doesnt move you up a flex - in black and white terms, so to speak. Sure, doing those things will effects aspects of ball flight and feel - but they dont literally change the flex of the shaft as some people quote.

Yeah it's a 5 wood shaft at best, driveway marker at worst. As others have said, never hand pull an adapter without a shaft extractor. For the cost of the shaft that gets ruined you could have bought one. No sense in crying over spilled milk I've made my fair share of mistakes when first working on clubs. Grab yourself a nice bench and mount an extractor on there and have at it.

Figure I would just add on here rather than start a new thread. I have a damaged adapter, I would be looking to remove. Keeping in mind the "don't twist" above, could I just pull the adapter off with a pair of pliers, or is there too much risk there? Would probably look to sell the shaft....

Your question has already been answered. If it's a graphite shaft, always use a proper shaft extractor/puller. Anything else will always be a high risk. Either buy one or search the forum on instruction to build a DIY extractor.

Any time I jack up a tip like that I cut off the damaged area and throw it in the corner as my next fairway wood shaft experiment. Otherwise the wife gets a new expensive garden stick to hold up her plants.
