Does sculling the ball count as chipping? In that case my 9 iron and 52° wedge are 50/50.

I think the conventional wisdom is to use what works for you. Chipping is largely a matter of practice and comfort, and I think every player will have their own, personal preference. If you practice a

Since taking up the game I only use LW & SW for chipping and pitching around greens. However, since getting my 620MBs, I been looking for ways to use these beauties, so PW & 9i been used more

Great question. Love reading everybody’s thought process. I personally use a 58 if it is a tight pin location but if I have a lot of green to work with I use either my 54* or 48* SM7. Like somebody said, use the lowest club you are confident with dependent on pin location. I used to use solely a 58 but found that I kept hitting the ball very thin or blading it. When I switched to my 54 and 48 I was much more consistent - I’m assuming it’s a mental thing but who knows!

52 deg was perfect for chipping back when I had one. Now I use my 50 degree for most chips with green to work with. Doesn't work as well as the 52 deg and find myself choosing 54/58 often due to the elevated greens I'm playing a lot now.

Chipping is very personal and there are a lot of ways to do it successfully.

Like is the current trend, I chip using the bounce to make it a lot easier. I use my 50* and 58* for just about everything. My 50* is great for letting it run out. My full face 58* is a dart thrower.

I feel like I can hit just about any short game shot with either of these clubs. I tried to use a lower loft club for more of a 'bump and run', but personally I struggle more when I bring different clubs into play.

depends on course & conditions IMO, my local doesnt have that many defended greens so i can use either a 7,8 or 9 iron to bump and run alot of the time, im quite comfortable doing the "b n r".

i used to bag a PM Grind 58* but from the fairway inside the 90 meter mark in the height of summer i was rubbish with it (the club is magic in the right hands no doubt, im just rat sh*t with it) so i swallowed my pride and got a MD5 in 58*.

I use my 54 for most chips. It has a wider, fuller sole than my 58. I will use the 58 if I really have to get up and over something. If I can at all bump and run it more I will use a my hybrid, 6, 8, or set gap wedge (normally the gap or 8 iron) as it is much safer shot. The local course I play most often had small greens but they are always on the slow side so I rarely need to use the 58 to get the ball to land and stop on a dime.

Inside 20 yards, I've decided to go either high or low:

If I need some lift onto the green I go with a 58* LW... generally a slight cut shot, not a lob.If it's a chip and run, I go with a 7i, toed in slightly and hit a modified putting stroke. My new irons have hollow heads, and a square-face hit tends to check up too quickly and not roll out enough.I've adjusted my swing on partial shots to engage the bounce, namely skim the ground with the sole of the club rather than hitting down on the shot with the leading edge. More reliable on distance control.

My current setup (loft/bounce): 51.09° GW 56.14° SW 61.07° LW

56° sees most of the duty, especially out of deep rough or moderate up slope

61° use for fairway/tight lies & light rough to tucked pins, off a down slope, or above the hole

51° primarily level or uphill lies, light rough or fairway, go to below the hole with green to work with, or popping off the bank onto an elevated green

It depends on the type of shot I am trying to execute and the lie I have. If I have a very tight lie I might want to take a less lofted club and execute either a bump and run or a shot that runs a fair bit. I might use a 9 iron or pitching wedge. If I have a bit of green I want the ball to carry 1/3 of the distance and run out the rest of the way. I will probably use a 50-54 degree wedge. If I have short sided myself on a green or have to pitch it over a bunker I will use my lob wedge and open the blade up a smidge and take an accelerating swing at it.

I use anything from 9 iron (40°) to lob wedge (58°) depending on lie, slope, carry distance, landing zone, green speed, pin location, etc. 50° and 54° are used the most.

I recommend using only one wedge for a while and trying to hit different trajectorys. My chipping improved a lot since I figured out how to manipulate dynamic loft.

That’s the way I learned over 30 years ago. My dad taught me to use a sw and then 60 degree as I got older for all green side chips. He was a scratch golfer that used the 60 degree for almost everything. He was great around the greens and I still find myself mimicking His style and holding the face when I need to keep the ball down. I am questioning this approach though now, which is why I started this thread. The answers and different approaches have been really valuable to me

I only use 54 or 60. Which I choose to use depends solely on how much I have to carry the ball to hit my landing spot to run out. If I can use the 54 then I use it. I'm a fan of getting the ball rolling as quickly as possible.

I don't practice regularly with any other club so chipping with anything else is out of my comfort zone. I will chip with a PW if I have a huge run out. But those shots don't happen often.

Will depends on the lie, greens and what I'm working with between me and the pin. I'll use anything from 5i to 60° and not gonna lie I probably do the best work with my 5-8i when it comes to chipping.
