Who chips with what?

For chips, ie; bump and runs, I use 46° pw. Mizuno MP4 .

With my vintage set, I use the 7 iron, old school style.

I use my 56° wedge probably 85% of the time, I'll use my 60° for when I'm short sided and would like the ball to stop. I'll also use a 8 or 9 iron for bump and runs, but I need to practice those for distance control. I've also used a 3 and 4 hybrid.

I like putting whenever possible, but I think I went too far last round. I was about 20 feet off the green with an uphill tend to the green and the pin was probably 12 ft onto the green from there. With a bit of apprehension I still chose my putter. I told myself the last thing I want to do is be short of the putting surface , but that was probably the worst thing to tell myself. Putting, I hit the ball way too hard ending up 20 feet past the pin, costing me a bogey. I knew right off I should have used some sort of iron shot to take the 20 feet of approach out of the picture.

I hit every chip the same and use the appropriate club for the distance. From 60degree to 6iron. If Bunker or rough is in the way, I’m pitching / opening up. But the chip is pretty much the same motion regardless of distance.

I recently got a PM19 Wedge as I wanted to try a high toe full face groove wedge, before I would hardly use my 60° and after getting this I'm pulling it often. If I'm in the rough around the green I'm hitting my 60° now, if I'm on the fairway I'll use my PW, 51° or 56° most of the time as I like to keep it low from there.

I understand that choice. Using putter from 20' or so off the green when turf is really short and consistent to green edge is fine. Add a big slope and different length grass and fast green problems will happen. IMO - What club depends on undulations/slope and turf cut and density, leading to green edge and how far the pin is from edge, green speed and undulations.

Similar situation happened the other day with my 12 handi buddy. He's not confident with his 60*. Anyway, about 18' off the green, uphill putt to a tight pin and slightly downhill green right after the pin. He asked me what I thought. I told him the turf was puttable but as the ball crests the slope grass looked a uneven and feeding to the right of the pin. To reach cover the crest he needed to whack it good, but once it reached the longer grass was going to slow up and may do something unexpected. Pin was about 15' on. I thought with putter too much luck was needed. He chose to putt it anyway, whacked it and the ball blew over the top and past the pin about nearly 25' - he was then putting slightly uphill to the pin, came up short and took double-bogey. I would have used open face LW and plopped it on the edge of the green, spin would have quickly slowed it down, ball would have trickled towards the pin leaving maybe 3-4' putt. Have a good holiday weekend.

It's a bit of a discouraging testament of the human nature in situations like this. I could be on a practice green somewhere and put myself in this situation and probably knock it close every time with my putter. Just put a tiny bit of pressure on me and I blow past 20 ft. I know I have the skill set to do it but sometimes it just doesn't work out.

Of course you wouldn't get it close "every time" but hitting that same "putt" from the same position over and over would teach you generally how hard to hit it.

But when you play, you only get the one chance. And higher (fairway) grass and an unprepared surface is much harder to judge than the grass on the green, a shorter, prepared surface. This is why a better player practices chipping and gets it ON the green before having it run out.

Like Trevino told a spectator once when the spectator exclaimed how lucky Trevino was to hole a chip shot "Yeah, the more I practice the luckier I get". LOL

I was taught to use the least lofted club to handle the situation. As such, I will use anything from 7 iron to 58 degree SW plus putter.

One of the guys I play with uses low lofted clubs around the green, and from some significant distances. The problem I see with his short game is unless he is just off the fringe he tries to run everything up and has a problem judging how much the fairway/rough/fringe (whatever he is running the shot through) will affect his shot

I like missing greens because chipping and little pitches demand visualization and concentration to execute. First, I determine green speed and grain direction and other possible influences that may affect the ball, then how much turf must be carried to my landing spot, then how much run and undulations need to be covered to reach the pin. Pace is #1, then one of the following: 58*, 52*, 47* maybe 43* 9i choice. The only time I use 8i or 7i is in TX and Maui on the Plantation where greens are huge.

56* for 90% or more of my chips. I'm confident around the greens right now but I need to get comfortable playing the PW bump and run again. I get no roll out playing on relatively flat, average paced greens. My 56* degree chips land and roll maybe a foot or two. I would prefer better looks at dropping these chips in the hole.

I use my 60* for everything around the green. I grew up playing courses with that either had small undulating elevated greens that didn't set up well for bump and runs or muni courses with very poor maintenance where I felt I had more control flying it closer to the pin with a lot of spin. Old habits die hard. Recently have started using short irons or my PW if I have plenty of green to work with and don't feel like putting from the fringe.

BIG +1 here. This is a very concise description of exactly what I have seen (and now experience). Trust the Kiz....also, if anyone finds what kizner has to say interesting and/or easy to digest, then Shawn Clement and Wisdom in Golf is the teacher to check out. He has been preaching "throwing weights at your target" for 20 years...he lines up with almost everything Kiz is saying here. This is absolutely spot on and will make the game a lot easier. You are chunk-proof when you engage the bounce.

(Also note his info on the full swing)

Good thread with  lots of ideas of how each of us chip different

Of course if the fringe is short and if I can "putt" the ball with a hybrid or putter then I would

Over the years I have changed my chipping style   When I started I felt comfortable chipping with one wedge  54 degree

Then with LW becoming more popular I started using 60 but wasnt very consistent with it   Then I got 64 and become better as I was forced to learn to use the "bounce" Something I wasnt accustomed  as much  around the green as I mainly played in flat courses  without many elevated greens  Certainly had my fair share of bladed, chucks and scull shots but now confident with the "modern" technique of  "bruising the ground with the bounce" I still prefer to "bump and run" if I can

I no longer feel "short sided" any longer and will use 60 /64 when needed

( the reason 64 help me was I could still deloft the 60 and try to  bump it  , with the 64  bump ad run it doesnt work as well , so i had to use the bounce if that makes sense)

When I do mess up its when I can  not decide  if I should engage the bounce  and  "fly :  the ball closer to the hole or use my usual handle forward "bump and run"  with the 54  as it still a versatile club for me

So I dropped the 54

Currently I use PW or a LW  and this will force me to lob/flop with LW  or run ball up with PW there is no between shot with 54

BTW I found that  modern bounce technique also helped develop my green side bunker play

I chip with multiple clubs, but only wedges. My estimated usage percentage:

PW (46): 10 percent

GW (50): 20 percent

SW (54): 50 percent

LW (58): 20 percent

I like to use different clubs even though 54 is my favorite loft. I love the feel and control of the 46 (my set wedge) and appreciate that it DOESN'T spin. I like to have a wedge that I know will roll out with no check for longer chips. In fact, I would love to have a set GW because I really don't need the spin or bulk of a specialty wedge at that loft either. It's only the higher lofts where I want a little more check.

I have experimented with the extreme multi-club approach for chipping, but anything lower-lofted than a PW is overkill, IMO. A PW gets the ball coming out plenty low with little spin. A 7 iron produces bullets for me that I can't control. But I do think you should consider working on chipping with something other than just the 58.
