PXG 0811 X+ Prototype Round 1

Recommended Posts

My PXG 0811 X + Prototype was orders on May 6th, shipped Friday and arrived at my home via Fed X yesterday on Sunday just in time for a 7am tee time today. I chose the Riptide 60 6.0 CB shaft built to 45 inches.

here are my thoughts

1. I hit all but one fairway off the tee and my miss was in the first cut. Accuracy was superb!

2. Sound- similar to PXG Gen 2. Nice solid thwack. Very pleasing to the ear

3. Feel- great feeling. Not hard or harsh and much better feeling than the SIM it’s replacing. Ball jumped off the face like a rocket

4 Forgiveness- excellent. I hit a couple off the toe and they ended up in the center of the fairway

5. Ball flight. - nice mid high piercing flight. No ballooning. Roll out after hitting the ground. Did not mess with settings and played at 10.5 all round

6 Looks- really sexy Similar to Gen 2 but not exactly the same The muted black crown just screams spank me Daddy

7 Distance - I was getting longer and more consistent drives than with my gamer - SiM 10.5 For me at age 63 I’ll take 270 off the tee all day any day

8 Shaft- Really loves the PX Riptide CB I orders it thinking I would not like it and would be using a Tensei White Pro that I have form my Gen 2 but the Riptide CB performed so well with such great feel and consistency I never tried the Tensei White And i May never have to

shot my personal best of the year today 76 I have been struggling with back issues and lack of playing due to the pandemic but it all came together today and in large part because I was keeping it in the center of the fairway

Bottom line! Two thumbs up and bye bye Sim!

Got my Proto X+ w/ Diamana S+ on Tuesday and took it to the range today.  Wow.  Coming from an R7 460 this is a huge leap in performance and feel. Easily 20yds longer carry.   Not to mention the sound

Something showed up today for the Proto...🤤🤤🤤

I did not mess around that much but I thought the entire feel was effected big time with the heavy in the toe.  That was why I want to mess around with fine increments to see what can be done.  I just

I ordered that exact setup and it got here today. I had ordered an 0811X Gen2 and changed to the X+ Proto and it got here pretty quick.

I have only hit it into my net in the back and the thing feels awesome. Super solid and the head shaft combo feels great and is very stable for me.

The one thing of note for me is that this thing sits open. They set mine on the small - for loft down and more open so it is really open, which I love. I am not supposed to play until Sunday but may try to play Saturday as well.

I got the Lamkin Z5 PXG grip and that feels awesome as well with a larger lower hand. I figured this was a no brainer since the price will go back up $200 more on June 1st. The bet paid off and I think this is a real winner.

I'm playing the Gen 2 XF still. I almost bit on the proto but the fitter I work with at PXG told me that for me, a high handicapper who needs more forgiveness (and presumably other things), he still thinks the XF is he better driver for me and told me to hold off on the proto and he'd let me know when he thinks there's a new driver out I should consider (maybe when the final version of the prototype is released? who knows). This is coming from somebody who works at PXG and sells me clubs for commission. I pretty much texted him and said take my money and he said no. So not saying the X+ isn't great (and it obviously looks awesome), but if you can schedule a fitting, I'd go for it and try both.

That’s fair. For me however based on my honeymoon round i don’t think it can get better This is coming from a guy who owned both Gen 2 drivers and the proto is better than both for me It’s also better than the SIM and Mavrik SZ it’s replacing My results and impressions only Fully respect the fact that others may see different results and have different opinions and I should also say that I won’t try the other proto model As long as mine continues to perform I did see a review of that driver on TXG where they compared it to Gen 2 and there was no comparison

There are several reviews on here that say mishits are punished with the Proto. I just sold my Gen2 0811x because it was punishing. For a 10 capper, there is better out there for forgiveness and ball speed. I went to the Sim Max.

I am a PXG guy and support them, but I will wait until they can keep up with TM or Callaway when it comes to drivers.

PXG irons are their thing and love them.

Definitely. Different drivers/shafts work for different swings. Just suggesting for anyone who hasn’t purchased yet to swing both first, I should’ve been more clear. Glad it’s working for you!

I've gotta check out the TXG review. Love their videos and reviews, interested to see what they say.

Thanks for sharing! I hope the honeymoon last forever. The driver looks awesome. I need to try one out against my best driver Sim Max/GD IZ combo. Keep us post on your rounds.

I agree completely with your points and advocate demoing both. I simply knew that due to declining swing speed and other joys of life that come with increased age I would be better off trying the X+ first. Ten years ago I was 112-115 consistently but today the only way I reach 115 is in my car on the freeway. In any event I think these new drivers from PXG will be their best offering to date and deserve consideration if one is in the market

Agree 1000%. I wanted so bad to buy the GEN 2 XF but the numbers were not better than the driver I was hitting ( M6 ) at the time and my fitter ( Edwin Huh ) told me straight up he couldn't do any better. He also fitted my for my Gen 1 irons, Gen 2 and again Gen 3. When I went to get fit for the Gen 3 irons he stated that there was minimal improvement in the numbers over my Gen 2's. But the looks won me over so I had to have them.

I put this in another thread,

Took my new Proto X+ to the range last night. Hard to tell much there except much lower ball flight with the weight in front and different sound. I adjusted the loft to 9.75 before hitting anything. For me, still too high with the weight in back. With the weight in front had an old school Callaway Fusion like sound but a little better. Seems real low spin with weight in front. Forgiveness seemed good but I will know more after a round today. I still don't get why positive attack angle model comes only in 10.5. Not a big deal because it can be lofted down .

How would you compare the 0811X+ to your TS3. I have both of those drivers and would interested to hear your thoughts on how those two compare with the setups you have tried.

Did you hit the same shaft in both the 0811XF and the Proto+? My first round, I’m thinking I hit the Proto+ a bit higher than the 0811XF.

Played 27 holes with the Proto X+. Bottom line is when hit in the sweet spot it is the longest I ever played. Bombs. When missed, it is not very forgiving. TS3 much more forgiving but shorter on the good ones. This Proto X+ is probably analogous to the TS4 (that I have never hit). I am still going to make it work because of the distance.
