I’m the same way, I really really liked the Proto with the Cb Riptide, but something was just off with it, grabbed a Ventus Blue on a whim and it’s been my new favorite club in the bag and that’s saying a lot as I’ve had issues in the driver Dept over the years. But now I know it’s going to perform everytime out.

Did you happen to try the Ventus in any other driver? Point being, do you think it's more the shaft than the proto? Thanks

Well, being the Ho that I am 😉 I had actually bought a Cobra Pars & Stripes driver that had the Ventus.  Played it side by side vs the Proto and it was noticeable the difference between shafts (Cobra was point and shoot) Proto with Cb I had to swing easy...so that led me to jump at trying the Ventus in the Proto. And kaboom baby it made a HUGE difference. Now the Proto is point and shoot and I can just swing knowing it’s going to perform how it’s supposed to everytime.   Hope that makes sense and helps.

I was fit at PXG HQ for the Proto + and it was the Ventus vs the GD AD TP and the TP won out with lower spin and better feel. I am partial the GD shafts though.

But... the deep faced Proto head is just so forgiving and solid and low spin. It’s a win win for me.

It’s killing me looking at this driver in the bag.  I got this thing had 2 rounds planned and got covid 19.  Then after that long delay had a chance to play last week and needed to pick up a truck I had bought and was holding out picking it up.   It’s been since Nov 28th since I’ve played last.  Every decent day 45° or up, I’ve been tied up.

hoping to get out soon. Hit the driver 1 day at the range but couldn’t really tell much other than it definitely lowered my flight (which I wanted) and it was much better sounding than my old Epic Flash SZ

Hang in there man. I got COVID have not played since Nov 22. First round back today and this thing shined. I was happy to be able to walk 18 holes after 3 weeks of terrible health with COVID. I was actually surprised how well I felt today.

Still not taste or smell, but vision was good. I did see a few birdies today!! Lol

Sucks that you guys had COVID, I’ve heard bad things, my brother and his wife got it, mostly flu like symptoms...but a close friend just lost his mom today from it after being sick like a week. Unfortunately she had bad health issues and COVID didn’t help it. I hope and pray it’s on it’s way out of our country and our lives.

Thank fellas. I am a pretty healthy 50 yr old and it was a very bad flu that kicked my tail. Serious fatigue and headaches were my issue. Could not get out of bed for days.

COVID is real and just take it serious. No fake news here. Appreciate all the thoughts. Was happy to shoot 79 today and win a skin. The Proto driver, 0211’s, and my new PXG Forged wedges were so good today.

Yeah, body aches and flu aches for a day and a half for me. Never lost taste and smell. Just felt like crap for a day and half.  But didn’t feel all better for 6 days. I’m 40 and overweight but in good health.  Glad to be back.

Got to hit it today for 9 finally. Feels solid. Sounds like a baseball bat to me, (a good thing).  Def keeps my flight down with the speeder shaft.  So far after 9 holes, I’m happy.   Need some time to work with it tho.

Glad you finally got out! The thud sound that it gives off makes it feel/sound awesome imo. Prefer it now over the pinging sound of other drivers after playing it for a while

I think I caught whatever is going around, it was mild symptoms for me....easily fatigued but not much else.....rested in bed under quarantine for 10 days and it didn't get any better or worse.  Took the Covid test twice and it came back negative so im definitely happy about that.  I think there is a mild flu going around that just saps your energy and not much else.

As for the Proto X+, I just switched to the X and its a great driver too, if you are willing to give up a slight bit of forgiveness for a bit more roll, this is the driver for u....It might be my imagination, but the X+ feels better and carries a bit further but the X will win distance overall if the fairways are medium or firm.

Got my Proto+ under the tree on Christmas.  Had two range sessions over the weekend and played with all the adjustments then played a round yesterday with the set up as close as possible to my 12 degree G20 driver, weight in back forgiveness position at 12 degrees.  I though that would be a good place to start. Hit it fairly well, didn't notice any more distance but dispersion was much better.  The ball flew much lower with the Proto in 12 over the G20. Getting a lower ball flight was one of my goals.  Had a range session today, all with the Proto, must have hit 125 balls.  The 10.5 standard setting with the weight up front in distance set up appears to be the one for me.   Started slowly but by the end was gaining at least 15 yards, great ball flight and going dead straight. Played with many tee heights too and defiantly had to tee the ball up lower than with my G20.  As always, YMMV.

Can anyone comment on how the Proto X or X+ compare to the old Callaway Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond driver? I know, it's always a mouthful to say.

The BBA 816 DBD driver paired with an Aldila Rogue Black shaft was easily the longest and most consistent driver I have ever gamed.

The Proto X is giving me similar vibes from what I can see, and I'm thinking pairing it with a Tensei Pro Blue could be a really nice combo.

Played (still playing) the 816 DBD for 4 seasons.  Was ordering a Gunboat last week and got suckered into the holiday pricing on the Proto X.   Don't know if I would have switched from the DBD (which I've loved), but this is the first driver that's actually piqued my interest.  We'll see if it makes the bag by Spring.

Got in 18 today.  Still loving the driver.  I have the driver in standard with the heavies weight forward.  I l faded the first 4 drives to the right side of fairway on 3 of them and missed the fairway by about 20’ft on 1 of them.  Decided to play around with the weights ( I know not legal) and moved the heavy weight in the heel or draw setting. Hit dead straight/draw drives the rest of the day and only missed one more fairway.  I didn’t hit center of club face the rest of the day but I was in the middle of the fairway the rest of the day. Need to work on center of club face now.  Love the sound.

Haha - you meant to say that one of the weights was loose and you needed to tighten it up.   Then it fell out and you forgot how they were in there 🙂  No one cares when you are fiddling with a new club's setup.  If you don't do it on the course you will never convince yourself you have it right.

Good stuff - sounds like a great journey so far!

I wanted to follow up on a comment I had made about a ball speed difference for me with both of these drivers.  A few months ago the difference in ball speed was +7mph for the X.  This is from Top Tracer Range.

A week or so ago, I was hitting the two again and wearing a long sleeve baselayer and an Under Armour mid-weight top that restricts my freedom of motion a touch.

In session #2, both drivers were about 1-2 mph slower than the X from a few months ago and were essentially the same.  I think it is an issue with ball strike quality and obviously I was not striking the X+ as well as the X

I also tried the + again on the course and (for me) it is not as consistent.  The X allows me to hit the ball where I want pretty much all the time, where the X+ is a bit more up and down.  The thing that is the issue for me is the open look of the X+.  Originally I loved that, but as soon as I started playing the X, I have struggled with that look.

What were they like in comparison to each other on spin?

This is a hard question to answer.  Let me say that you can dial this in very close to each other.

If they are set up at the same loft, the X+ will launch higher and has a more open face - so I guess depending on how you deliver the club the difference may not be that much - meaning that if you close up the face you will take the dynamic loft down.

For me they are close to each other as I have set them up as follows:

X+ - small minus = 9.5º

X  - Big + = 10.5º

If I set the X+ to 10.5º it has a nice high launch for me - I had originally gone with small minus to get the open look.  The X face is slightly taller and suits me better.  Both of them do not spin that much but you can certainly work the ball with them.

So to answer the question the X+ spins slightly more, but the settings can make both very close.  I would choose based on your preference for face height and an open/rounded face versus a straighter face.

Thanks. Depending on what comes out in the next couple weeks, I may try to find a used X to try. I hit the X+ well but have a tendency to lose it a little right and spinny with it. An X turned down to little minus should work in theory.

Have you tried messing around with the weight and hosel adapter?  As in heavy weight forward or heel and turning down loft?

In all seriousness, they’re both great clubs just depends what you need. For me the X being lower spinning of the 2 made all the difference between them for me. Like 12-15 yds diff.  So just depends what you need.

Lol. When I got fit my fitter would not even let me hit the X. I went with the head and shaft I was fit for and sticking with it.... telling myself that for 2021.

I am happy with my control and distance. This old man keeping up with scratch golfers 15 years younger is good enough for me. Lol.

Lol I hear yeah. My fitter let me try the X+ and after about 5 swings said I told you...LOL.  Can’t deny the difference it made for me. As far as drivers, with this ProtoX and Ventus Blue I’m set until one of the two fails.  It’s that good for me.
