Confessions of an Iron Cover User

Recommended Posts

LMAO at the granny panty analogy but completely relate to the other side of argument for protecting the investment in my sticks. For those guys who don't like the clanging and banging, a year or so ago I stumbled across a bag called "Never Looz" where the clubs clip into place. It's an interesting bag concept but not sure how ideal it would be for walkers. I think about that bag every time I hit real rough patch to hard in the riding cart and hear my clubs smashing together. I've never seen one of the bags in person on the course though.

Beautiful set. That is why I am pro-covers too.

Cover, in the garage??? Ok... I have a GT3 and a BMW M sedan (my daily driver), neither are covered but both are kept in the garage. My buddy has twenty collector cars in a large garage, none are covered. To each their own. Have a good day.

I have a McLaren that I keep covered... In the garage. To each their own. Have a good day.

I used them in the beginning of this year, then sold the set and passed them to the new owner...

I missed the silence...

didn-t really lose time putting them on and off, the main hassle after a while was that they became stretched out and prong to fall off, so I had to back track to collect them after falling off...

from that as of now I play without them I like the contrast of covered woods, hybrids and the putter, to the exposed irons...

well if I had expensive pieces like maybe Beres 4stars and above sure i use them... pxg and below I will happily expose !!

Interesting, a college golfer who worked at a local golf shop during summers said he used iron head covers - when his clubs were in transit.

He would put the head cover on his irons before he put his golf bag in the carrier for team airline flights, or before the team equipment manager loaded the bags into the van for road trips.

Then, he would remove the iron covers before they played in their match or tournament. After the event was over, he would give the irons a quick clean and put back on the iron covers before he handed them off for transit. He played forged irons, and wanted a little extra protection for loft and lie.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

Driver:  Tour Edge EXS 10.5° (base loft); weights neutral   ||  FWs:  Calla Rogue 4W + 7W

Ball: 1. Srixon Q-Star Tour / 2. Calla SuperHot (Orange preferred)  ||  Bag: Sun Mountain Three 5 stand bag

    * MD4 54°/10 S-Grind replaced MD3 54°/12 W-Grind.

Maybe he plays on empty courses? I'm lucky if I can finish 9 holes under 2 hours playing behind leagues or slow people who don't let people play through!

Depends when you show up.

I usually play after 6pm and can get 18 in under 2.5 hours walking while playing two balls. When we're a threesome at 7am, just over 3 hours.

interesting article today on Aaron Rai’s win at the Scottish Open:

“That said, it’s impossible to look at Rai’s bag setup and not mention the obvious gear accessory outlier rarely seen in the professional ranks.

The accessory is a set of worn iron covers currently protecting his Tiger Woods-designed TaylorMade P7TW blades. If you’re unfamiliar with the covers, some golfers prefer to use them to keep their sticks from picking up unwanted dents and dings. Forged from a soft 1025 carbon steel, the P7TW is prone to picking up “bag chatter” when the heads bang against each other. Some don’t have a problem with the worn look. Others want to keep them pristine.

What’s interesting about Rai’s cover usage is this isn’t something that started with the special Tiger irons. When Rai won for the first time on the European Tour in 2018, his Tour Preferred MB irons were hidden by a set of red and black TaylorMade covers that had seen better days.”

I don’t use them simply because to me, a set of smaller forged irons sitting in a smaller carry bag is just such a classic look of the game. I just like to be able to see them. I understand it’s a completely weird reason, but it’s just an aesthetic thing. When the college team comes out to play and their bags are sitting around, the small blades in a small bag with basically just a towel draped over them.....it just looks right to me.

That being said, I don’t care if anyone uses them. Although my buddy can get quite annoying with his at times.  Especially when there’re covering his shovels.

I use them just to keep the Mizunos in nice resale shape -- Now that I have the MP-20s the MP-4s may need to go up for sale.. they are like new even tho I played them for several years... here is what they look like today -- I am Pro-Iron Covers - this is why.

Understand that is important to you, that’s why golf is an individual sport for the most part.  I love looking at my irons in the bag.   Each to his own.

Are they ludicrously expensive like most PXG new releases? Do they go Kaboom as you take them off the club?

If the answers no to both I’m disappointed.

Walking up 18 on a late sunny afternoon, the rhythmic clickety-click of the clubs on my back in the bag, a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Nothing beats that.

It is, indeed, a glorious sound and feeling. Like being transported to a parallel universe where all is right in the world.  Other than that effing 3 - jack on the 4th hole.

I just bought clear, see through iron covers on Amazon (forgot the name, but you can search for them)

I put on one every other iron to prevent club chatter (so only on my pw, 8 iron, 6 iron, 4 iron)

They’re see through, so no one can even tell, and when riding or walking, the bag chatter is gone

/end thread. You’re welcome 🙌

@SFloridaGolf954 If these Iron head covers = entirely see-through ... presumably they're not easy to spot, if they fall off your club/bag & onto the golf course!
