Why do people delete the asking price in BST?

clinkinfo

Recommended Posts

Ok, so the official rule is:

DO NOT DELETE THE CONTENT OF YOUR LISTING WHEN YOU SELL AN ITEM OR CLOSE THE LISTING. Closed listings will be moved to the BST Archive Forum for future reference. You may, however, delete the photograph attachments to listings as well as the listed For Sale price if a different price has been mutually agreed to.

why do 80% of the people here delete the asking price (even when I’m SURE they get it at times)? What is that getting you as a seller? It makes it so frustrating to try and figure out the market here when so many of the archived threads have no pricing?!?

It’s helpful for everyone (buyers and sellers) if you’d just leave the pricing listed.

If you want the real "market price" for something your best bet is to check ebay and look at the SOLD listings.

The "market" on this site is a whole other animal these days.

but that’s exactly why eBay forces the auction sold listings to stay around with pricing, so you can see what stuff is going for. We should be insisting on the same thing here IMO.

the market here is easy to understand. Take the eBay price, factor in that you’d be charged in eBay fees, and ask close to what you might get NET after the fees. If you do that, it will sell. If you try to get more, it might not do anything here. But lately SO many sellers here are trying to get eBay prices (or higher at times) and then saving all the fees themselves. That’s not how this BST section EVER worked.

another way to price, look up your trade in value at several sites and ask a little more. If you do, they will sell. If you ask more, maybe, maybe not. I feel like some of the slowness here is in the asking prices. I sell and buy at times here, and I always price like I described above. And everything is pretty much gone in a day or 2. I go through the ads as a buyer and sometimes laugh at the asking prices, and then some people have the *you know what’s* to say “lowballs will be ignored”. I mean, what? First, you’re priced way too high, so anything I send will be a “lowball”to you, AND second, you’re trying to SELL something. You don’t get to be a non-communicating passive person. Put some effort in, get some back and forth going, make some concessions. Close a deal!

I’m not sure the word “cyclic” is what I’d use. Frustrating might be a better choice, especially when the same constructive feedback gets ignored and ignored by those using the services. Plus, the way I read the rule, if you got your asking price, you aren’t ALLOWED to delete the price. But people are.

Agreed. I posted a similar thread a while back and for shot down for many of the same reasons (the main one was that the asking price is not necessarily what the item sold for). Another group said that if they don’t delete the asking price as put the word “sold,” they get questions from other members asking if the item has sold or not. Okay, so instead of changing $250 to $SOLD, just put the word SOLD at the start of the listing. I never understood the logic and I still don’t.

It's cyclic in that there certain posts that come up time and time again. What is the best shaft, 4w or 3w, BST sucks, bst needs to keep price. I just posted one reference and you being here longer that I have, assuming you've been active, have seen this come up before. And Im confident well see it again in a couple months.

Regarding the following of the BST rules, could also add you're not allowed to remove photos, but many do. Members as ruposed to close their own ads.. Many don't. Not supposed to sell brand new shafts..

I get both sides of it. But I mark it sold because I do keep getting is it available if there's a price. Also because in pretty close to 500 transactions, Ive gotten full price less that 95%. Not sure that helps someone unless I put SOLD FOR $XXX. I fact, go read the other cyclic BST sucks posts talking how it's currently trash after the site upgrade and people are over asking for price.

If youre against my thought process, nothing I say will change your mind. Just putting out some alternative logic.

Hey look. Same topic that rolls around several times per year...every year...for the last decade.

Yes, cyclical, and extremely predictable.

Standard answer... I don't want 50 PMs asking if something is still available when I've already sold it. Bold capital letters reading SOLD replaces my price. You want to get a gauge on what things sell for, eBay SOLD listings has plenty of data for you.

This is coming from someone who has >300 Transactions on the BST.

I started a thread exactly like this a while back. I agree, it's nice to be able to see asking price on the BST, it helps me price my items (I also check ebay and Facebook)

After I sell an item, I just add "SOLD" in front of and behind the price like this.... SOLD $100 SOLD. Takes the same amount of effort to do this as it does to remove asking price. Plus it might help other members.

Once or twice a year someone will message about one of my items that has been sold, but it's really not a hassle.....

Simple answer...

The majority of sales in the BST are rarely at the asking price. Given how some prices are inflated and how some are at a good price, people will still bargain. This devalues the posted price and shouldn't be used as an indicator of how much an item sells for.

If I posted an item that retails for $300 but I want $1000 for it, should I leave the price up for some people to think that going price is really $1000? No.

But no one will think that because that’s the asking price, not the selling price, and everyone knows that an item rarely sells at the asking price. It would be helpful to see what people are asking for certain items, just to get a sense of what people are asking, not what they’re getting.

And besides, I thought the reason sellers delete the price is so they don’t get messages asking whether the item is still available?

The listed price is rarely what it sells for. I can list an item for $100 that is under eBay pricing and someone will say “Hate to lowball you but I only have $60 in my PayPal”.

Firesale prices here are expected unless the item is newly released or limited edition or a Cameron putter.

I will throw items up here for a night and then move them to eBay as I set a price and then drop it every few days.

Anything will sell on eBay, not so much here.

How about...

SOLD for $300 SOLD

??? Just replace the asking price for the actual sale price? I’m sure this could be resolved easily, but some people for one reason or another just don’t want to disclose how much they sold items for.

But I’m okay with the seller not disclosing the actual sale price. That’s between him and the buyer. I just don’t understand the rationale for removing the asking price. So far, we’ve heard:

(1) the seller doesn’t want to get emails from buyers asking if the item has sold; and

(2) the asking price is rarely what the item sells for.

I agree with both of these points but I just don’t see how leaving then asking price in the listing with the word SOLD in capital letters doesn’t address both of the above concerns. Sellers shouldn’t get messages from buyers because the item is now marked as SOLD, sellers haven’t disclosed the actual sell price, and forum members can at least see what the original asking price was. It’s a win-win-win for everyone, I think. Maybe not.

You’re selling on a public forum, not in your backyard. So when you say it’s “no ones business” that’s BS. eBay makes the sold price known to manage the marketplace expectations. So in a dispute we can see what you sold it for, and we know what to offer the next seller for the same item. If you want to do things in private get off the internet, this isn’t a private place. This forum needs the same eBay information, and none of the reasons posted explain why the asking price needs to be deleted, you made that PUBLIC already when you posted the ad!!

Correct, it was public when my ad is posted. When it sells, it is between me and the buyer. This is somewhat a public forum, but nothing says you or anyone is privy to my private sales info. Everyone is welcome to doing the same thing I do when trying to sell something, check EBay. If people are unwilling to do a little research, then they shouldn’t be selling here. Most items here now are priced above eBay sales anyway hoping for a quick flip of their latest purchases from Ross or Marshall’s and isn’t in the spirit of what this place used to be. I’d suggest if you care about what my items and 90% of others are priced at prior to selling, take a snapshot. Doesn’t mean a whole lot though. Can’t remember the last time I sold an item for asking price. Kind of like one of the newest BST ads now, Jordan’s priced at double the purchase price because stock x says so. Didn’t think flipping was allowed here but that is the prime definition of it. Don’t try to make $5 off a pair of Nikes from Ross though.

It is absolutely no one's business except between the seller and the buyer. I couldn't care less who bought what, from where.

If there's an issue, there's a PayPal invoice/receipt if prices need to be verified. There is no 'we'

With eBay anything sold on there with the best offer option, the actual sale price is not listed, it shows the original asking price which is crossed out and it states best offer accepted. The actual sale price is not shown. Sort of like every sale here, there’s an asking price but rarely is that the sale price. That’s the business of the buyer and seller.

Im aware of this website and have used it multiple times, but this isn’t common knowledge to most. Most ppl will only see what’s on eBay directly.
