GPS vs Rangefinder in 2020

Recommended Posts

Philomathesq or anyone. What features on the s62 are absent on the fenix 6 other than the touchscreen? I'm a hard core runner and I also coach xc. Ive survived quite well with a basic garmin gps watch for years as far as my running goes. I love my laser but I do like to supplement with gps. The phone apps are nice but sort of a pain to keep grabbing for the phone while playing.

On the fenix, are you entering fairways hit/missed right on the watch while you play?

On the flip side, how is the s62 for running?

Lots of questions-I apologize-but guys have first hand knowledge here and I appreciate your insight greatly.

If you go to the Garmin site you can do a side by side. I ordered the Feneix because really the only thing missing was the virtual caddie and the tempo trainer. The running and swimming features that you get for me far out weigh not having those few golf items. Especially since this is also going to be my everyday watch

I can’t speak to the features of the S62, as I don’t have one. However, on the Fenix 6 Sapphire DLC, fairways and greens in regulation, as well as number of putts, are entered when you enter your score for the hole after you’ve holed the putt. If you miss the fairway, you can enter where your missed (left or right).

Got My Fenix today. I didn't get to the golf course but I messed around with some of the other features. I will say I was a bit concerned about the size when I saw it was 51mm compared to my 42 mm AW. I really like it though, Actually the perfect size

Question for those of you who have used a rangefinder:

I normally wear glasses and also have a difficult time reading without my glasses on. I oftentimes play golf without my glasses on or any vision correction, will this hinder me from using a rangefinder or will I be able to adjust the device to focus for my condition?

Most have an adjustable diopter. The ones I've used do adjust the focus quite dramatically, however I have excellent vision so can't comment on how much it helps to correct things other than focus.

It's not the rangefinder so much, it's my eyes! Because the optics of rangefinders are plain sight instruments and not like binoculars or SLR cameras where you are re-adjusting the focus for varying distances, depending on your eyesight I have always found that you actually do need to readjust the diopter depending on the relative distance you are looking at and your visual acuity.

I see your point and I have used a garmin watch quite a bit but I am really fast with my laser so that does not make any difference. The problem I had with the watch is that just a little to often I would look at it and see the time because it lost sync and did not know where it was. Then it is messing around with for the at least one more shot trying to get it to load the course in again. For me the laser is a simple, quick and accurate.

Did some more testing today. Laser and gps gave same yardages all day (once I was satisfied I was hitting target with laser). Sticking with gps watch, just way easier for me.

Could be the laser I was using, kept having to shoot over and over as gave different distances especially when partially obscured flags, just a pita.

I've been using an S62 watch all season, and while I don't have many full rounds in, it is definitely a good enough replacement for my range finder (which has remained in my garage since I got the watch)... I miss the range finder for our range, as we don't usually have distances up... but that's about it.

Watch is quick and easy to use, and the one time I got to play a round, I liked it's features as a score keeping device... I have not (and likely will not) use it for a virtual caddie. The tempo feature is nice.

More than anything, it seems to consistently pick up WHEN i've swung a club, and will give me the distance the ball actually traveled. Not great for my ego, but good for my golf scores.

screenshot-20200613-221217.pngHere's an app on my phone that I'm beginning to like a lot, I have included three screenshots of the same hole with the curser moved to three different locations. The first one is the distance to the trap, the second one is the distance over the trap, and the third one is the distance to the water. The cursor can be moved anywhere giving you the distance to an object, and to the green. I can shoot anything I want distance wise and know all I need to know about any hole I play. I like the animated landscape over the satellite view because it is easier to see due to its brightness and simplicity. I matched it up with the GPS of my watch and markers on various parts of the golf course and it is very accurate. The reason I what is thinking of getting a rangefinder was to be able to know distances to various objects on the golf course, but this does all that for me. The app is called "Birdie Apps".

I use both the Golf Logix app and a rangefinder during the round...not a slow player I promise.

I like the App to see a map of the hole and just get approximate numbers to landing spots or areas to avoid.....plus the app is great for stat tracking and score keeping. Makes a HUGE difference if you’re playing a new course or somewhere that you don’t know all the best lines for you quite yet....I’m talking to you Echelon.

I use the laser on all the approach shots but again will sometimes reference the app for a min/max carry yardage.

There is definitely pros and cons of both and also if you are an weekender warrior or a single handicap.

With GPS its hard to get the exact yardages with the flag position, but it is very simple to use, you walk to your ball and get an estimated yardage, also if you do travel internationally to play golf, some courses might not be available in your GPS devices so this is where rangefinder comes in handy and also you can get yardages on the range.

Now days you can get a pretty good rangefinder inexpensive such as Nikon

Played with a guy who used a rangefinder two days ago. He’s a decent player and looks thru that thing all the time, which is fine. He became frantic On the 16th when he thought he’d left it somewhere on the course. He borrows a cart and goes flying off. He returns dismayed saying no one has seen it. $450. Then he says it might just be in his cart net. And it is. It fell into it.

when you have something that is not attached you can lose them. No shock or surprise it’s just how stuff is..JP uses a gps watch. He knows the extent of his ball control And front, middle, back is more info than he ever had playing golf Growing up.

Played a course a week ago where the course had made some big changes and it was not reflected in his gps watch. Not having yardage all the time on his wrist, he had to rely on his eyesight. JP left 4-6 Approach shots short where he wouldn’t have with gps or a rangefinder. He found his capacity to gauge distances with his eyes had atrophied it seems. Felt uninformed...uncertain at times.

GPS are great devices. Fast, convenient, and work on a nice clear day in an area with good reception to at least 3 satellites most of the time. They just need to be honest and put before the number the word "about". It's about 125 to the middle, and about 111 to the front, and about 145 to the back. And that fairway bunker is about 250 you'll need to carry. And for 99% of golfers, knowing about the yardage is accurate enough.
