Spin Rate Very Low On Launch Monitor. Help!

Recommended Posts

Got an iron fitting today (7 iron only) while using a launch monitor. I am around a 15 handicap. Tried Cobra King Forged TEC with KBS tour 90 stiff shaft and Mizuno MP-20 HMB with stock shaft (i forgot to look at it). Felt like I hit them both fairly well however my spin rate was over 2000 less than recommended with my 7 iron.

Data averages for Cobra King Forged TEC follows: 90.69mph club head speed, 123.33mph ball speed, smash factor 1.36, 16.97 launch angle, -369L side spin, 4398 backspin, 4429 total spin, 31.57 peak height, 44.14 descent angle, 182.57 carry yards, 196.29 total yards.

Data averages for mizuno MP-20 HMB: 89.78mph club head speed, 122.11mph ball speed, 17.85 launch angle, -635L side spin, 4568 backspin, 4646 total spin, 32.18 peak height, 45.09 descent angle, 178.27 carry yards, 191.09 total yards.

I know the general rule of thumb is that my 7 iron should have spin around 7000. So I am way off. However, my smash factor, launch angle, peak height, descent angle, carry yards all appear to be normal ranges for a 7 iron.

Any suggestions? Maybe a different shaft, different brand iron, or do I need to change something in my swing? Or is spin rate not very important as long as my launch angle, peak height, and descent angle are relatively normal? Thanks for the help.

I wouldn’t get hung up on 7,000 spin for 7 iron. That is older data that pertains more to traditional lofts where a 7 iron would be 34-35 degrees. With stronger lofted, low CG irons, you will see higher launch and lower spin. I like the loft x 200 rule for determining optimal spin. So, a 30 degree club should spin around 6,000. I don’t feel like looking up the specs, but I believe the lofts of those clubs are near 30 degrees.

At your speed, sub 5,000 spin in my opinion is too low. You’re going to have unpredictability especially out of rough or wet grass. I’d be trying to get land angles closer to 50 degrees for a 7 iron. You may not be able to get enough spin with the hollow head design. Weakening lofts by a few degrees could be an option if you like everything else about the heads.

A different shaft will probably not help because the KBS 90 is going to be one of the highest launchers that you could control before becoming too light.

What ball were you using for the demo? The ball can have a massive impact on spin rates, over 1,000 RPMs sometimes in my experience.

The loft for the Cobra Forged TEC is 29.5 and Mizuno MP-20 HMB is 32. Even though the average spin for the mizunos was 4646 I did hit a couple over 5300, while I never hit 5000 with the cobra. Half my hits were with a range ball then we switched over to a callaway which seemed to add about 400 spin to each shot. I think the Cobra forged TEC is not going to work, but I wonder if I should try the Cobra Forged CB/MB since it is lofted at 34 for a 7 iron. As for the Mizuno, I am almost certain the stock shaft was a low spin shaft so maybe I'll try a higher spin shaft like the KBS Tour 90. Also would loft x 200 rule be for rpm on grass or on the mat. How does hitting on the mat affect the spin rate?

Some mats make spin go up and some make spin go down, but I wouldn’t expect differences more than +/- 500 revs at the most.

See if you can try a Nippon Modus 105. It’s a mid weight shaft that adds a little lift for most. Pairs well with low spin irons.

If you were hitting hard draws, that would lower spin as well and you could consider a flatter lie angle for more dynamic loft at impact.

OP, Try the Mizuno shaft optimizer for some suggestions where to start?! I am a low spin player and found Ping i210s spun the most for me. In a fitting, head first, then fine tune with a shaft and a more spin ball may help!? BS XS may be the ticket?!

1) Your spin was low because you were hitting off of a mat. IF you want a real idea of on-course spin, you need to be monitored while hitting off grass.

2) There is no rule that your 7i should be around 7000 rpm or that that number is any kind of ideal or target you should shoot for. All it is a a rough generalization of Tour averages, there are plenty of pros that are both higher and lower than that number. Amateur averages are probably much lower. Also whether you get close to that or not is going to be most influenced by your swing. Swing speed and the delivery of the club into impact. Mmostly dynamic loft or shaft lean at impact but also things like the quality of the impact location on the face, face to path, AoA, etc... Your spin will be what your swing lets it be. Equipment is going to play a relatively small part at best compared to the swing influences. You might be able to tweak it a little but don't expect any major fixes IF the problem really is from the swing. Tweaking loft weaker is generally the most effective way to do that.

I've heard great things about the Bridgestone Tour B XS balls I will definitely try them out. I was looking at trying Ping i210s as well because of the 33 loft in addition to mizuno jpx 919 forged, 919 tour, callaway apex pro 19 which are also all weak lofted.

I would rather be fitting on-course but no one around me is doing demos right now due to COVID-19. I guess I should be patient and wait though. Thanks for suggesting mat does not equal grass. I will also make sure that dynamic loft is part of the fitting process once I select a head. Is dynamic loft best measured on grass as well or does the surface not matter as much?

Depends on the individual. Some players may tend to shallow out the swing when hitting off a harder surface like a matt - which can change the delivery - both AoA and dynamic loft. But some do not. More common for higher AoA players, than the shallower hitters.

And while there are exceptions, for the most part mat fittings aren't completely useless. Shaft selection really should be made based on feel and consistency of the results, not based on launch and spin - so you should be able to get that figured out. Length and lie should be pretty good as well. The main influence will be on head lofts. Since the lofts can vary quite a bit between different models means that the final choice of heads could be influenced by the launch and spin. But at a first round of trials just keep in mind that you could potentially gain up to 2k of spin moving to grass. And if you stick to only considering the weaker lofted options than there is not much else you can do as far as head selection so even that can be done off of a mat. Worst case you may just have to tweak the lofts a little bit more once you see numbers from off of grass (with real balls, not range balls).
