Has anyone had "adjusted differential" kick in?

Recommended Posts

I've posted about 20 rounds already this year and I haven't had a single round where the adjustment was not zero.

Obviously, I don't know what everyone posts each day, but I've been out there on a a few tough days this year (tough pins, tough conditions, people getting back into the game after the plague lay-off) in a group with 12-16 people who I know almost all shot way over their handicaps and it has me wondering just what it takes to get the adjustment to kick in.

Pretty much everyone in the game I play with has seen their handicap go up a couple of points early in the year.

So, anyway. . .has anyone seen the adjustment happen? what was it like out there that day?

Nope and definitely played in some conditions where was expected. Curious to see IF ever do.

We've played in saturated soil, forcing CPO (path only) along with some 30 mph winds, if those don't qualify, no tellin what would.

At our club, they've had enough scores to calculate the PCC on 15 days on the easier course, it has come out as 0 13 times and twice it has been -1. The PCC has been calculated 7 times on our tougher course, 4 times it has been 0, twice +1 and once +2.

With a dry spring, the rough not being fully grown yet and the greens being slower, the easier course has certainly played shorter and easier than it does for most of the summer. As for the tougher course, I'm actually surprised there have been four days of no adjustments as it's one of those courses that don't fit well into the Course Rating system.

Definitely a crapshoot.

It's happened once (PCC: -1) in my 50+ rounds this year. That was a typical Spring day with a bit of breeze, fairways slightly wet but not muddy, course setup absolutely normal and just the usual member play going on. Nothing to suggest it should be an "easy" or "hard" scoring day. Probably just a combination of enough people playing from my tees and posting immediately plus a few outlier scores or something.

"enough people playing from my tees"

As I understand it, its not done on a tee by tee basis, the evaluation includes all scores posted on that course for the day, as long as they're posted on the day of play (with some other minor limitations).

I have 74 scores posted in 2020. No PCC’s. I’ve played in rain, I’ve played in snow. I’ve played in high winds, I’ve played in dead calm. I’ve played in extremely hot, and I’ve played in very cold. No PCC’s

I did shoot more than 7 under my index one round and got the -1 adjustment for all 20 scores on my scoring record though. So that part of the system certainly works.

Handicap administrators (usually the Committee Chair and often the pro shop staff) can look it up for any course within the Regional or State Association. For instance, I can see if any course in Virginia has a PCC applied for a specific date, or range of dates. Or you can check the records of anyone you know who played that day. But I don't think its easily available if you're just curious. But now I'm curious, why would you want to know about a PCC on a day and course you hadn't played?

I had a -1 show up recently and I have no idea why. They day did not seem unlike any other day with no adjustment.

a67b3e42-04ae-4dcd-81f6-7072575f4308.jpegThis is not mine as I did not play that day.

Does the CDGA have this backwards?

In order for that 84 with a -1 PCC to have a differential of 10.9, a score of 85 has to be used in the differential calculation. Is the CDGA using “-“ when they should be using “+”?

ETA

Looks like it is correct. When the PCC is -1 you add 1 to the posted score before differential calculation.

Had a +2 the other day. Perfect, benign conditions. No way the course was playing harder than normal. I wonder how many scores have to be posted for a course on a given day for a score variance to be considered statistically significant.

I have 89 rounds posted this year and had my first PCC adjustment. A -1. I shot 1-over which should have been 2.6 differential, instead it’s 3.6.

And here I thought my first good round in a month was going to sink my climbing cap. Instead, it only went down 0.1. Thanks PCC!

As a follow up...

I now have 200 scores posted this year. I have 3,+1 days and and 3, -1 days.

The 3 plus 1 days were tourneys where a bunch of players from around the area go to a course they don’t usually play and everyone posts their scores.  I imagine the average differential on the course that day is higher than normal.

The -1 days I shot a good score and the PCC basically said, “Conditions were too easy, that’s why you played well.”

In conclusion, the PCC barely adds in. If one wanted to keep their cap at home on a spreadsheet with everything the same except the PCC, they would have close enough to a valid cap to gamble with. It’d be close enough to “identify their ability”.

As I said in December of 2019, the PCC would be much ado about nothing.
