OP is still here. Glad to see there are still dudes out there hitting these irons. Great sticks and the FM shafts are awesome!

What's up Big mac!

I love mine with the FMs! I don't know too much about them honestly. Wish I knew what they weighed in at for starters.

Recently picked up another set of heads and going throw some KBS shafts in them. Mix up old school and new school. What do you think?

Surfin Turf I'm doing great. Golf season in Ontario is like a month earlier than normal thanks to the mild winter. You are correct about sand wedges RAM did for Watson. I have one that I have ground myself that I mean to send to the Iron Factory to get rechromed/regrooved. Also, you can check my RAMs out if you check my linked WITB in my sig...

Also, FWIW the FM shafts are Royal Precision not TT.

Just acquired a set of mid 80s Golden Ram Tour Grind forged blades. Can anyone tell me what the stock lofts are supposed to be 2 through SW?
I'm picking up a set of 2-SW this weekend. I'm glad you asked this question.
The guy that was selling the GR Tour Grinds sold the damn clubs to someone else... guess the guy offered him more money. I did find a good set of irons though.

The one thing I liked about the Watson wedges was they could be had in BeCu, Ni and Cobalt. I have about 4-5 sets of 53-55-58 BeCu, 2 or 3 of the Cobalts and one of the Ni. Fantastic wedges.

The old Brunswicks were the best shaft made, too bad they gave them up for rifles. I had 2 sets of NIB one set the 6.5 for when I was young and another set of 5.5 for when I get older. But I gave the latter away.

Your WITB is sweet! I've been there before actually. You've got the earlier heads stamped "Vibration Matched".

Both my sets are stamped "Axial" and "Frequency Matched". Shafts are labeled "Frequency Matched, Dynamic Gold, 265 Cycles". Circa '89 or so I'm told. So they're FM's, huh? Not sure of the differences. Definitely lighter than S300's.

Glad your season is starting early! We have no seasons where I live which ain't too bad either.

NIB c. 1982 TG's and 4 or 5, HaHa, sets of BeCu's!!!

You don't need all that stuff do you really? I'm right here Bro.

BTW, I picked up a bunch of VTLT's partly 'cuase of your old posts. Now I'm hunting for Brunswicks.

I put them at '83 vintage. I've also got a set of late 80s Accuform PTMs (awesome irons), '85 Wilson Staff Tour Blades (my fav irons of all time), and a set of Hogan Apex IIs that I've had refinished. Will post pix when I get them shafted.

Back in the balata days, Tour Grinds could be had with both TT dynamic golds and the Brunswick FMs. IIRC some TT sets had 2 stickers 1 the DG the other a FM # sticker- could be wrong as I've slept since then.

The only difference between old school shafts and new ones is really the better QC seen today. Back in the day the pros would find a set of shafts they liked and they'd just get new heads for them. But as far as technology goes I think the older steel shafts still got it.

I'd rate the old Brunswicks as the best shafts ever made and the Apex 4s as second.

Those are my blades up 4 posts BTW.

Looks like I missed your previous post where you wanted to know what the modern equivalent to the TT FM 6.5's would be. My 5 iron came in at 330cpms which would make it XXStiff, in a TTDG S300, and I'd think 6.5 - 7.0 in a PX.,

 • 8 years later...

Grave diggin here.. Let’s go back in time a little while.. Just picked up a set of Tour Grinds 3-P with Precision 6.5s from my golf coach for $90. Found a matching 2 on eBay for $20. Thru on new golf pride victory grips to keep them original and touched up the paint fill. Seemed like the perfect match with my ballstriking ability and the ball flight. Definitely gonna game them this coming season and eventually make them my backup set when I decide to buy a new set. Even found an old 80’s Ram staff bag to go with em. I never thought I’d be playing irons almost 40 yrs old and almost 10 yrs older than I am myself.

Love seeing Ram Tour Grind posts.  🙂

If you're inclined to use the original standard lofts, the lofts that are mentioned on the first page appear to be those for the Frequency Matched Golden Rams.  They largely match what I was given when I got my first set of Golden Rams, which were Frequency Matched models.

The Vibration Matched and 1980 Tour Grinds may have been slightly weaker.  Possibly the "20-30-50" lofts for 2i/5i/PW that were seen with the FG-17, but they could be a degree weaker.  I'm reshafting my Vibration Matched Golden Rams, will be setting them to 17-20-23.5-27 for 1-4, then 4* from there to a 51* PW.  FWIW

Welcome to Club Ram.  🙂
