I remember seeing a question like this on Instagram a few months back and it jogged my memory. In most recent memory I commented:

Driver: 907D1. I don't even need to think about this one. Just junk through and through and on the heels of the 905 product it was a supreme disappointment. The 909 stuff at least went back to the roots of a Titleist driver was but they still sucked big time.

Fairway: As much as it pains me as I still think it is one of the best looking fairway woods out recently, but the Steelhead XR. Callaway basically killed it from release. It had no marketing, they released it in like July or August of 2017 (on the heels of Epic mind you), with not so much as a presser to say it was coming out. I remember seeing it when I was down in Carlsbad and we were getting a tour of the tour fitting facility and seeing it there. I was like "wow, this is going to sell!" and then....nothing. The next release, Rogue, had Jailbreak. Epic Flash was adjustable with Jailbreak. Now we have AI + jailbreak. There was never any attempt to make this thing succeed, when behind the ball it looked amazing. A jailbreak version of this with the Steelhead sole would be amazing and I would be all over it.

Hybrid: Taylormade Tour Preferred. The model before Y.E. Yang with the adjustability. It had the Rombax 85 or 95g graphite in it. The thing was tiny tiny tiny, sat shut, and had a face depth that was small. I think Tiger in 2000 at Pebble Beach wouldn't have been able to hit this thing correctly, it was that bad. Honourable mention to those weird fad hybrids that came out around 2004-2007, those fwy hybrids. Remember those that had the loft of a fairway wood, but the head that was in between a hybrid and fairway, but the shaft length of a hybrid? Nobody could really figure out they were supposed to replace. You hit them too far to replace an iron, but they were woefully short and just as inaccurate as a fairway wood. It made no sense.

Irons: Wilson Staff D-Fy Hybrid set. They had some sort of proprietary bi-matrix fat shaft, IIRC. Horrible design, had a hole in the back so the club whistled when you swung it or waggled it. Fat, chunky, no feel, cheap stock shaft was all you could get. Not a cool idea. I think the store I worked at ended up blowing them out for like $250 when they retailed at $700 new. Honourable mention goes to the Callaway BB06 with the i-Brid long irons and mock bore-thru that liked to melt when you had to reshaft them if you weren't exceptionally careful. Just...no.

Wedges: Sonartec T35 and T45 forged wedges. Beautiful look at, even today some of the nicest wedges I have seen. Outside they had no spin and felt rock hard. I don't know a single person who owned these let alone remembers them but me.

Putter: Toss up between Odyssey Metal X Milled and Nike IC. For Odyssey, about 60% of the ones we sold came back within a year of complaints the wire mesh on the face had come off and needed to be RTV'd. For Nike, it was just an ugly forest green putter with Hi-Vis white paint as the alignment aids. The idea was the putter would blend into the grass and you could focus on the ball. It was an idea from their soccer department that they used on some type of balls to make them easier to see when playing night games. Honourable mention goes to the original Cameron Detour and Ping Doc 17 just for the sheer size of them and strange design (and ugly accident orange or highliter green headcovers and grips).

I'll tell you a story, I was playing in 2018 and had taken the hi bore out of the closet for kicks in a casual round next to my gamer. This buddy I'm playing with is having a miserable day with driver. Duck hooks, cold tops, the works. And we are letting him have it. Finally he says "Hey Mr. 2 drivers" (after I stripe one) can I try that funny-looking Cleveland?" I'm like go ahead, and I kid you not he hits one of those once in a season drives that's a good 20 yards past the rest of the group.

He looks at the thing with amazement and is like "How much you want for it?" - "I dunno $50?"

He pulled a 50 out of his wallet on the spot and that was that. Worked for him the rest of the round and he games it to this day.

So for some people, pretty good club.

Totally agree. The VAS irons has got to be the most ugliest irons ever. They make the Ping Zing 2 look like 2005 TM TP irons.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
Titleist 990 (3-PW) with stock Dynamic Gold in S300
Taylormade V-Steel 5W & 3W with Grafalloy Prolaunch Red shafts (Regular Flex)
2011 Adams Tom Watson signature wedges in 52 and 56 degrees with stock steel shafts (Player's Grind)
Rife Island Series Aruba Blade Putter

"Loft for loft, length for length, and shaft for shaft, the ball will go the same distance when hit on the sweet spot regardless how old the iron."

If I were Pavin I'd take my gold metal for winning the US Open along with a VAS iron and lock them both up inside a trophy case.

  • 5 weeks later...

P790 UDI. It was anything but Ultimate, most times I could hit a 9I further and straighter.

A truly appalling club when matched with a HZRDUS yellow shaft.

It lasted half a bucket of balls at the range, 33 to be precise, of which about 5 were decent and the rest dreadful. Sold it the next day.

I realise that I may be breaking the Trade Descriptions Act by calling it a golf club because it was just junk.

Yeah....no. The sldr was the greatest driver ever. Not only did I hit it crazy good and long, but it started the low spin revolution that still dominates the sub and lst model lines today. Those designs gave us high spin players 30+ instant yards we couldn’t get before. Sorry you didn’t like it, but it was in no way a pos in real playing life, It obviously just didn’t fit you.

and the m5 was one of the best feeling newer drivers. So I think you maybe have some anti-taylormade blood.

for me, a “chipper” for around the greens was the worst club. Took up 1 of the 14 and did nothing well

SLDR Mini Driver. Junk. (But the Original One Mini is great).

Ping G irons. Terrible relative to the marketing hype. They were heavy, got dinged up immediately, and felt like they were made out of scrap metal.

Ping Crossover (original). Ugh.

Every cavity back wedge.

For me, not that they were bad irons, the Mizuno TZoids. I got them in my standard 2° flat only to realize that the standard lie for them was already 2° flatter than what the standard was on other irons so I ended up with a set 4° flat! I could not hit them straight! I didn't realize the discrepancy in lie angle until after I got rid of them.
