First round with the Green Book and it was well worth the money. Helped me take 2 skins and win the team event. Already paid for itself. Love it.

I bought one to try on my home course, it is actually very detailed and shows why things break they way they do. I did this cause i wanted to compare to something i know the greens fairly well and like i said it was super nice, they are also USGA/R&A compliant.

I think 40 bucks is high but it gives more then yardages compared to the books you buy at a course for 7 bucks. I didnt like the phone idea so this is a great alternative. I am ordering 2 for my trip coming up to Myrtle and then i can tell you if they are really worth it.

Are we 100% sure these are USGA tournament legal?

I swear it was on the site before, you can always inquire at USGA.com and ask if they are legal.

After several rounds with it, it’s has paid for itself in Skins money. Guys in my large money group are even buying them. They see the benefit.

They are. On the iPhone version, you just have to turn the feature off that tells you where to putt.

I have a vague memory that there was some earlier version of the (printed) green books they had to revise slightly to make it fit the current USGA/R&A Rules. But I'm sure the one I've owned for a couple years is allowed under the Rules.

I've never even considered pulling mine out when playing in my usual individual or partner games. That much information would be too distracting for me in real time, so speak. I pretty much need to stick to my normal take a look, line it up, stroke the putt routine.

But in solo rounds I've really clarified a few places on various greens where I'd had some doubts about where exact the flat spot was on top of a ridge or identifying some subtle inflection points that are not easily visible. After playing my home course a couple thousand times I can be pretty confident over my read about 90% of the time. But practice rounds with the green books has filled a few of those doubtful gaps in my knowledge.

That's true.  The USGA mandated that the maximum allowable scale is 3/8" = 5 yards.  Puttview, GolfLogix, and Strakaline all comply.

After using the GolfMetrics app for a while, I have confirmed what I already knew.  My putting is the worst part of my game and is what is holding me back from achieving my goal of becoming a scratch golfer.  The interesting bit of information that I was able to learn is that my putting is fine in the 0-6ft range and the 22ft+ range.  It is 7-21ft that I am losing all of my strokes.  Since I am making the short ones, my assumption is that I’m starting the ball where I want.  Since I’m fine on lag putts, my assumption is that I’m controlling my speed well.  Armed with this knowledge, I decided that the issue is most likely green reading.  To test my theory, I ordered the PuttView book for my home course.

Since receiving the book, my average score has dropped by ~2 strokes and my index has been going down.  Looking at the stats, I can see that the entirety of the change is coming from putts 7-21ft.  For me, the book has been a true game changer.  I will say that I don’t usually use the book on short putts because the level of detail isn’t fine enough for me to trust it and I already have trust in my ability to use my own senses to read short ones.

As a caveat, I am a data scientist and I love data visualization and find the heat map presents the information in a way that is perfect for my brain to process quickly and accurately.  I’ve shown the book to some playing partners and they find the information confusing and distracting.

Additionally, I have found that a side effect of using GolfMetrics is that I have been pacing off my putts, which has over time helped me to improve my confidence in my speed when combined with reading the slope from the book.  At first I was pacing only to get the data for entry and would do it either before or after the putt depending on what was most convenient.  Now I exclusively pace before the putt because I’m getting a better feel for pace based on the numbers vs eyeballing it.

Finally, I use TheGrint which tracks the pace of my rounds.  I have been at a steady 3:30 walking as a foursome, so pace has not slowed at all.

Attached are my SG putting charts before and after getting the book.  Both of the charts are filtered so that only rounds at my home course are included so the comparison is apples to apples.

After dekez posted his PuttView book I decided to order one just to see how it compares to the Golflogix books that I already owned. Below is a comparison photo:

The first thing I noticed is that the PuttView book is smaller than the GolfLogix book. It's not a huge difference, but it's enough of a difference that the PuttView book fits easily into my smaller scorecard holder while I had to trim the cover of the Golflogix book slightly to make it fit in one of my larger holders (if you have a "tour" sized holder or you don't plan on using one then this may not be an issue). Overall I prefer the slightly smaller size of Puttview.

The next obvious difference is the level of detail, PuttView definitely wins here. It has much more detailed markings for the fairway and tee boxes then Golflogix, which doesn't have much beyond a view of the hole and 100/150/200 lines. The green view for PuttView is also slightly more detailed, although I'm not sure if this is a meaningful difference for reading putts.

The final major difference is the finish of the pages, where PuttView is a matte finish with GolfLogix is glossy. I guess which one you like better is matter of taste, but I definitely find the greens easier to read on the GolfLogix glossy pages (they fact that they are slightly larger doesn't hurt either). The readability may also be influenced somewhat by the colors used for the different slopes of the greens, but regardless, I find GolfLogix easier to read (I'm 42 years old with what I could consider normal vision, if you're older or have bad eyes in general I think you'd definitely prefer GolfLogix for green readability). The break map (not the heat map) on PuttView is very busy and difficult to read in my opinion (the heat map is a bit easier to see).

So to conclude, I think that PuttView is definitely a superior yardage book in terms of details, GolfLogix wins in terms of readability. If you're someone who wants to know as many yardages from as many spots as possible, PuttView is your book. If you'd rather just concentrate on the greens and want something that's a little easier to read, GolfLogix is the winner.

For me personally, I think the jury is still out on which one is better for me, I need to use both more and see what I ultimately like better. Also, I did not have any quality control issues with either book, but PuttView certainly prints information closer to the end of the page than GolfLogix, so I can see how there might be more issues there.

Anyway, I hope this comparison is useful.

Matt

I’ve ordered from puttview strackaline and golf logix for various courses, but never each one for the same course. Thank you for the awesome side by side. Differences are visible here comparing hole 2 and 9.  Would be even more interesting to see the side by side for the same hole in each book!  Hole 2 puttview vs hole 2 GolfLogix, or hole 9 vs hole 9.

Since this is GolfWRX, I can not only show you a comparison of the same course for two books, I can even go one better and do all three!

This is Puttview, Strackaline, and GolfLogix (that order) for the same hole on the same course. I’ve provided two pictures since Puttview and Strackaline have the green on a separate page. Pretty much everything I said before is valid, but I will throw in that Strackaline is also somewhat glossy, similar to GolfLogix (and easier to read in my opinion). There are pros and cons to each type of book in my opinion.

One thing I noticed is that the way the green slopes are displayed is not exactly the same for all three books, you can see the differences below. My guess is that Strackaline is probably the most accurate (as it should be given the price premium), but obviously I don’t know for sure. I’m not good enough to really have any small differences matter, but that may be different for others.

I hope this is useful!

I have Puttview and Strackaline for same the same two courses. As shown above, I think the white on color arrows on the Strackaline are easier to read than the black color arrows.  While they are bigger and there are less of them it makes it easier for those whose eyes arent as good as they used to be.  I dont want to put on my readers to view these.

Strackaline also uses Lidar images for their books just like Puttview and Golflogix, if they tell you otherwise they are lying. They only use the surveying and green scanning lasers for the PGA Tour courses, and use the satellite images for everything else.

If you want a real PGA Tour yardage/green book that had a professional actually show up in person and surveyed and scanned the course with lasers, Mark Long has a website that sells them, expensive but worth it.

There’s no way you can get a professionally surveyed yardage book for your public muni course for less than $75, that’s when they use satellite images to create those books.

For those interested, GolfWRX and Strakaline recently announced an upcoming member testing event, so we should be getting several more detailed reviews of the Strakaline yardage and greens book, as well as the digital content they offer.  Looking forward to seeing the products.
