Equipment setup for 10 year old boy

Wanted you all to chime in on ideas and if I'm going the right direction on this. My son is 10, willing be turning 11 later this summer. He's a lefty, about 4'8" and 105 lbs. Started getting serious about the game last summer and started playing tournaments. Up to this point, he has been using a cheap Tour Edge HL-J (Red) box set (fwy wood, hybrid, 7/8 iron, 9/PW, SW and Putter). He has been scoring in the mid-40's from the Ladies Tees on most courses when he plays decent, could be better if short game improves. Carry on driver is about 180 (usually about 205-210 total) when contact is good. 7/8 iron is around a 120-125 club for him. We did upgrade his driver last fall (Callaway XR16 10.5* set to 11.5* w/stock Speeder 565 Evolution R-Flex cut down to 42"). Recently, we had him fit for the Ping Prodi G' s. We bypassed the driver, because he hits the Callaway really well and I think 15* is way too high for him. He should get the Pings in about a week.

This will be his setup when they come in:

Callaway XR16 10.5* (adjusted to 11.5*)

Ping Prodi G 22* fwy wood, 27* hybrid, 6-PW, 56* and putter (stiff flex for Prodi G shafts)

Srixon Z-Star Ball.

His setup sounds pretty much ideal.

My daughter has the Prodi G fwy and hybrid--really sweet clubs. For whatever reason, she hits the fwy with more consistency, though.

She had the Prodi G driver, and it was also a really nice club but yeah, for that kind of money (read: less) there are better options out there.

Please keep us posted on how the Ping iron set works out.

I brought mine a kids set of pings that lasted him foe a few years until he out grew them. Much better than the USA jr clubs.

The Pings have shipped. Should get them on Friday. Will update after he has a chance to hit them. A little bummed I can't hit them (son is LH).

Early review was good. Played 18 with him today. First time he got to hit them. Hit them ok early. Started getting adjusted to them after about 5-6 holes. Proceeded to shoot his lowest 9 ever on back 9 by 3 shots. Hit them great.

He absolutely loves these Ping Prodi G's. Good trajectory and much better dispersion than his old clubs. First tournament with them today and hit them really well. I would highly recommend them for serious junior golfers.

My daughter's experience has been similar with the 56*. It offers her more consistency in distance, spin and loft. It is also seems much lighter than her old Ping Pal SW.

Thats nice to hear!

I am in the same boat, my son had a 54" USKG tour series set with the lob wedge, then he moved to a 57" Callaway 8 pc set. He misses his lob wedge a lot. Now I have been looking/contemplating at the KBS 580 shafts and some GI iron heads instead of the 63" USKG tour series. I have built him anAdams XTD driver at 13* and a fairway wood with ladies flex. He drives it about the same distance as your son. It launches fairly low and rolls out quite a bit.

I just got my son a set of Ping Prodi Gs and he was moving from a set of Flynn irons and older cobra woods. Some thoughts:

My son turned 8 a month ago and is about 55" tall. Got him 56" length clubs, so perhaps a bit on the longer side. His old clubs were perhaps for ~52-53", so the length is taking a while to get used and he has moved from a thin miss to a fat shot but his good shots are really good. The one thing that I found weird in the ping set is that the 52 and 56* wedges are a bit longer; there is only a 0.75" difference between 8i and 56*, so there is more adjustment period there. I might just take the wedges locally to get them cut a half inch or so

The quality of the clubs is amazing, swing weight is spot on and overall, good value including the bag and putter. the customizations make it a no brainer as you are able to do it 2 times (though you can't really hand down clubs).

We’re going to try to hand a set of ProdiG’s down from my daughter to my son. She got them last spring but has grown four inches. She now has a set of Ping GLe2’s in standard women’s length. Since both my kids are lefties, it’s difficult to find them clubs to demo. So this worked out well. Interestingly, she was two degrees upright when we bought the ProdiG’s but is now two degrees flat. Thankfully my son is two degrees upright...for now. He’s young enough (8) and short enough (54”) that we should still be able to still use the free shaft upgrade before he moves on to adult heads.
