The 4 iron spot.....

DNice26

Recommended Posts

Whatcha got in this spot? Does it match the rest of your set? I’ve always matched up here, but find that I’m struggling to gain enough height to bother anymore. Considering a utility or perhaps a different, lighter higher launching shaft in thE 4 iron.

Pretty similar setup for me as well. I have the Super 9031 23* with a s300 shaft in it.

Why not T200 4? Is the u500 supposed to be easier to hit than the T200? I suffer the same OCD type tendencies...

Have a U500 4i to go with my 5-6 T-MB and 7-GW AP2 combo, but play a matching set Mizzy HMB 4i with my full set of HMBs.

U500 is a bit hotter and flatter, the HMB flies higher, lands softer, and is a tad more forgiving.

Also have the T-MB in the 4i (716 version); flies as high as the HMB with a tad more spin, a tad more distance, but much less forgiving on the toe side.

T200 irons AW to 5i, u510 4i.

Hated the u510 when I first got it, but forced myself to put it into play as it was the first full retail price () club I bought in quite some time. I'm glad I stuck with it. Took some time to feel it out, but now that I'm confident with how it behaves, it perfectly splits the difference in yardage between my T200 5i and my Cobra 3h, just like it should.

Just switched out the 4 iron for a G410 22 hybrid. It's like a a 205 yard pitching wedge. So easy and forgiving. Played long irons forever until now.

I just ordered the Ping 410 crossover for the 3 and 4 spots, to match the 2 as well.

I barely meet the launch angle and height requirements for the 4 iron range and therefore my stock i210 3 iron at 19* is just too strong for it to be practical. It hides under the wind really well and the only thing I gain is more roll out then the 4 iron.

Plus, the hybrids and UDI replacements are coming with hot faces and added height that you may as well take advantage of the extra ball speed.

Same here, although i'm favoring the X-Forged at the moment.

I am in love with the formula of set 5-iron -> 4 driving iron w/ set steel -> 3-driving iron w/heavy weight graphite. The 4-driving iron with steel from the iron set makes for a wonderful transition club that still gaps well but gives you a little extra pop and forgiveness when needed, and the 3-driving iron serves as an excellent tee club that still has plenty of loft to use from the fairway. Sometimes I may swap in a hybrid in this position however if I feel the desire, but the 4-driving iron club remains constant.

The T200 is going to be significantly more forgiving than the U500 IMO. The U500 is modestly more forgiving than the T-MB, which I actually replaced with HMBs to INCREASE my forgiveness, and I’m playing mid single digit cap these days.

Don’t get me wrong, the U500 is a very solid offering, but the HMB is noticeably easier to get airborne, loses less distance off the toe/thin miss, and is much easier to hit straight. The U500 is more workable, which is great if you want that, but it’s easier to accidentally hit crooked too.

While I’ve only hit the T200 once, it was even easier to hit high/straight than the HMB. It’s for sure more of a game improvement type club than the HMB/U500/TMB.

Had a U510 1-iron for awhile, thing was a cannon and didn’t fit my gaps, but the 16* U510 was only modestly tougher off the deck than the U500 4-iron. They are totally different offerings.

Great thoughts here, thanks! I’m a low single digit but can struggle with launching my 4 iron specifically. If I can make that spot in my bag easier, then I’m all about it. I have yet to see a T200 4 iron, but will check it out for sure. Cheers!

Yeah, look at lofts too, as that is the biggest factor for distance. The T200 4 = 21*, the 5 = 24*; so the T200 5 would actually match up best with the U500 4i

4 irons are dumb. Long live the utility iron! It’s an sgi 4 iron rebranded. It’s like when Alf came back, but in pog form.

I use to look at the lofts but now I go by trajectory and yardage.

Today I

72bc06ba-1e8a-44bd-a2b5-11f10c6d5276.jpeg did a side by side test with my i210 vs 2018 Callaway Apex MB and I was surprised that the i210 were higher trajectory despite 2-4 degrees stronger on the iron spots.

For example, my i210 PW is 45* and Cally is 49* did everything the Cally could do. The i210 3 iron is 19* and the Cally is 20* yet the ping launched higher.

It really is golfer dependant and based on the results but I wouldn’t hold true to the stated loft on the bottom of the sole; this was a new lesson for me today.

I agree... lofts are not the only factor; trajectory, spin, all this plays in. I was more meaning don’t assume that the t200 4i will be the same as the u500...

clearly I was preaching to the choir!
