The 4 iron spot.....

DNice26

Recommended Posts

Currently have a u500 2i which I absolutely smash off of the tee.  I’m debating between u500 4i or Callaway xforged ut 24.  My concern with u500 is they are designed to have little spin.  Has anyone played or demo’d both of these?  From research it seems like the xforged might carry a little more spin.

I’m specifically looking for a controlled 205-210 yard gap.  Reason I’m looking is I just moved into weaker lofted irons.

I bought Apex/Apex Pro 19 combo irons last year, 4-AW.  I had trouble hitting the 4 off the ground, so it stayed in the garage and I got a 21 deg hybrid.

I have Arccos and Arccos tells me that I'm not very good with my 5i approaches into greens and that the yardage gap between the 5i and 6i isn't as big as I expect it to be.  I'm going to change up my clubs as follows:

- replace the 5i with the 4i, where I intend to use the 4i for 190-210 tee shots where I value "straight" over "long" (I feel like a 4i will be straighter than a 4hybrid) and for punch/recovery shots where I need to keep it low.  My home course has some areas where if you miss, you're punching back under low-hanging tree branches and a 4i will be better than a 5i.

- replace the 21 deg 4h with a 24 deg 5h for the 175-195 yard approach into greens.

- i carry an adjustable 5w that's set at 19.5 that covers the 195-210 yard range

My 4 iron spot is filled with my 4 iron. I love hitting that thing.

Amen. I learned to play golf with 3-PW so it's never been an issue. Only recently moved away from the 3-iron in favor of a gap wedge, and use a hybrid between the 3-wood and 4-iron.

I have a Ping g400 9 wood that fills the 4 iron slot. That thing is money from tight lies or rough goes high and lands soft.

22* hybrid. That exact club has been in my bag for over 15 years, so obviously I trust it. I'm very comfortable feathering it down into my 5i distance range as well as stepping on it to get a bit of extra distance. It probably has the greatest amount of "dynamic range" of any club in my bag.

The club is so old that I went ahead and stripped off all the chipped paint and it's now just plain, unfinished metal.

I still have my set's 4-iron, but am fiddling around with a GAPR Mid in the same length/loft.  I can hit the GAPR just as far, but much higher.  Guess it will depend on course condition/shot requirements that decides which I play.

Using a 24* 4 iron MP-H4 that launches high.  Same shaft as the rest of my irons including 3i. Just more comfortable and accurate with iron over hybrids I've tried for that long approach spot.  Knockdown 4 iron has also been covering the 5 iron spot nicely which has been removed to have a top and bottom heavy setup.  My set 4 iron would probably knockdown too low to be as effective or versatile.

Interesting. How hard is it to hit?  I’ve been gaming MP64’s for many years and want to try the t100-s and get the 3 iron.

I have the 3 iron in my T100 set. It looks kinda chunky behind the ball so it makes you think it'll be easy to hit, and it is. It's not a tough iron to play at all for me. I imagine the T100S would be pretty similar.

I hear the talk and understand reasoning but don't understand what the benefit is replacing 4 iron with a replacement club if it doesn't work.  Shouldn't the buyer know the club he's buying provides better result before he buys it?

From what I see on golf courses, the only one that appears to be benefiting from club switching are OEM's.  Last week I went back to PX except instead of 6.0 to 5.5 and hit 620 4 iron 182yds into a breeze, to front of green, 2 putted for par and finished 1 over.  Dang, I love this game just don't understand some of the confused golf goals of others.

I am using a Titleist U510 4 iron, with the rest of my set being the 714 AP2. I like having the more forgiving 4 iron and it gives me better yardage gapping at the top of the back.
