  • 3 weeks later...

I got my set of 3 on Friday - 50* mid, 54* mid, 58* low - which replaced Vokey SM4s of the same-ish specs (had X100s in the Vokeys, and now S400 TI in Clevelands). Put them in play today and felt they were a significant improvement - something I've never before said comparing wedges. Felt much more stable at, and through, impact.

They look great at address, IMO. Not sure why so many seem so concerned about what the bottom and back look like.

I’ve had a 54 & 58 grind 2.0 es sole, 8* bounce on both in the bag since they came out. Thinking the mid bounce might be better for garbage, sloppy wet Florida fairways...... anybody hit both? Really like the ping wedges but these look good too.

I have tried them. The mid bounce is better for almost everyone. Just more forgiving and more versatile.

Got a lot on my mind these days so I’m asking for help deciphering the grinds.  I’m going to get the 54 & 58.  The 54 I need to be able to open up and play off of tight lies occasionally so I’m thinking mid or possibly low.  The 58 is my bunker and rough club so I was thinking full.  Does this make sense?

Alot of people do it the opposite way. 54 does not come in low. Just the higher lofts 56/58/60/62. But Mid in 54 would be fine, and if you dont hit higher lofts from tight lies and just from fluffy sand and rough, then more bounce in the 58 should be fine. Have to do what works for you at the end of the day.

The coolest thing is cleveland is starting basically a wedge works program. On the raws you can order them with pre-ground leading edges, different sole grinds etc.. But I think it is going to be way more affordable.

Man I don't see pre-order on the website but... I'll keep checking. I'm not really a vokey fan and I'm not that sure the black MIM wedge is as appealing as this. Been dying to get my hands on a stealth wedge ever since I upgraded from my black glide 2.0s.

Yeah give it a few weeks and they will be available. I bought the chromes as I had a golf outing and really needed wedges or I would have waited..

how have they been performing out of the rough and/or wet lies?

I really like them. They are doing everything I and my game could ask for. I do find them a touch shorter in distance but that can be adjusted to and may even out as the grooves break in. Or it may be due to the spinner shaft. I am not sure, but at the moment I do have to adjust for a bit less carry.

Shorter compared to what wedges? I do find the glides are very "long" and when I tested them vs md4 and sm7, glides were significantly longer, due to ball speed.

I was playing the RTX4 wedges before that. With DG AMT Black x100 shafts.

Cleveland had this for RTX2s I believe.  I remember spending an hour or two mocking up different wedges.  Cool that they are bringing it back.

Waiting for the black and raw to become available and then I’ll be going for 50, 54 & 58. Probably all in mid grind, unless someone can convince me that I need a full grind for iffy lies and the sand. If so I’ll probably get the 54 in full grind. Just concerned that it will then be too much bounce for the fairway? Conversely, does the mid grind have enough bounce for the sand?

We probably passed each other on campus a few times - small world! Undergrad ‘10 here, went west for grad at ASU. Good times in Hamden, to say the least!

Where are you located, what are your course conditions, and how do you like to attack the ball?

I’m in Phoenix / firm conditions, and have mid in both the 50 and 54, with low on 58. I use 58 out of the sand (and green side out of Bermuda rough) and generally try to get the leading edge as close to the ball as possible... bounce generally gets in the way.

Just got the Zipcore this weekend. I had RTX-4s and they were good but never really made it into my bag. I finally did a wedge fitting and learned a lot about my short game. I ended up with 50 Mid, 54 and 58 Full. I m just a high bounce player. I always had great luck with Vokey K Grinds so this makes better sense to me now. Bounce is my friend and I can use my hands more to manipulate the shot trajectories around the green.

I’m in Australia.  We can play all year round so my course will swing between wet and soft in winter to hard  and fast in summer.  So unless I want to buy multiple bounce options in each wedge the mid grind seems to be a good compromise. I wouldn’t say I’m overly steep into the ball either and the mid grind is a good option on full swings (it’s pretty similar to the sole of the Srixons which work well for me)
