Srixon 2020 Irons ZX7, ZX5, ZX Utility

Recommended Posts

I’ve used Srixon irons for ages and finally have a set of ZX5’s inbound (on MMT 105s). They’re due to arrive tomorrow and I can’t wait to have a hit.

The last set of irons that I really loved were z765’s on Modus 120s but steel shafts just beat me up too much anymore. I hated to let that set go but I’m fully committed to graphite iron shafts now.

My current irons are z565’s on Ozik Matrix F15 stiff shafts. I also have a set of I-506’s on NV Pro 105 stiff shafts. I like both sets a lot, though the z565’s feel a tiny bit head-heavy while the I-506’s feel more balanced like a steel shafted iron. I’m hoping the new irons have that same balance.

I went out for nine holes with the 565’s yesterday and naturally I hit them great all day. They must know.

I’ve never hit the ZX5’s or ZX7’s but after years of experience with their lines I feel like I know what to expect. Report to follow, weather permitting.

Does anyone have experience between Steelfiber i95S, MMT 95S, and MMT 105S with the ZX7 heads?

I tried a ZX7 / Steelfiber i95S combo and it's great. Just want to give the MMTs another shot but was hoping someone can shed some light on any comparisons to the MMTs at the 95 and 105 weight.

I have that combo and really like it. I have played it for a year. I did demo the MMT shafts a couple of years ago and the dispersion was better with the Steelfibers for me.

Good to know.

Which weight did you try for the MMT and how did the shaft feel compared to i95 in a swing?

I tried 105 and 95 range. I found MMT a bit more lively. The Steelfibers have a dead kind of feel which I have gotten used to and actually now like. Bottom line is that dispersion was more important to me.

First impressions off the mat in my basement are positive.

The clubs feel balanced, similar to my i-506/NV Pro 105 set. The head size is also the same in almost every respect though the toe on the older irons is a bit rounder. The i-506 didn't feature the V-sole but it does have the "channels" on either end of the sole that had been missing from recent Srixon heads until that feature returned on the ZX series. Holding the two 8 irons in my hands it's hard to believe that these clubs were released 25 years apart. Of course the older clubhead is a one-piece forging...

I'd say the ZX5's feel powerful but vague. There's not the same level of feedback as with the older irons. "Flushed" feels sort of "less clicky" I guess whereas with the older irons it is a bit sweeter.

But then I turned on my SC200 to start getting some numbers. Going back and forth between the two clubs, I immediately noticed the consistency of the data from the ZX5 set. My 8 iron carry distances varied by only a yard in either direction and I literally had three shots in a row that carried the exact same distance. The range from the older club was 2-3 yards either way.

This is the value proposition of the tech built into the new irons. You sacrifice feel for consistency. And the ZX5 was also about 5 yards longer in terms of carry numbers.

My guess is that I'll appreciate this consistency more in the 5-8 irons while the differences will be more subtle in the shorter clubs.

I'll have a chance to use them on the course tomorrow, weather permitting.

great feedback, I just picked up some mint zx7's and can't wait to hit them once I get them shafted properly. Making the switch from the JPX 900 tours and really excited about the forgiveness. Sound is not a huge factor to me because when you flush one I'm more focused on pin watching than complaining about the sound

I got my ZX5/MMT 105S irons out on the course today with just a few swipes from a mat before we went out.

My first several shots were all left going left. It took me a few holes to adjust my setup over an iron shot. With these irons It seems easy for me to get set up with the club face slightly closed, which is something I'll have to guard against. I started putting the ball back in my stance a bit and started making some good shots going into the turn.

Once I made the right adjustments I hit some very good iron shots. The trajectory and flight were high and strong. I still need some time to dial in my aim, but I was easily getting my expected distances and getting them consistently.

I believe those were for heads set aside for the tour, they either say U-L or U-H.  L=Lighter and H=Heavier.  At least that's what I saw in an eBay! description on a few different sets I've looked at.

Does anyone know if this is true? I have a set of ZX7 irons that have the U-H on them as well.
