Hats off to you--- Wish I was there beside you playing my stuff--- Did not catch it if you said so but what ball were you using? I know this from experience. The older grooves (providing they are not worn out) react better with a softer modern ball as does a persimmon wood. But hey sounds fun and it is one of those things you never will know unless you try

I use the Vice Pro Plus - 4 piece urethane ala Prov1x. I've tried low compression balls with the old gear and just never got along with them that well.

The sand wedge groves are unfortunately pretty worn. The groves on the other clubs are in surprisedly good shape given the age.

You probably have more swing speed than I do---- On the wedge our esteemed fellow classic HO Dee Jaid is working on re grooving one him self.

If you want to bring the wedge back, figuratively speaking, give the face a bit of blasting with aluminum oxide, or similar media. It's not grooves that impart spin, it's face texture. And, the flatness of the clubface. FWIW, this is a Tom Wishon suggestion.

Original grooveless club tests showed the grooveless clubs provided more spin, provided there was no grass, sand, water or other impediments between clubface and ball.

I’m late in congratulating you baloo but as has already been said above good on you!! I’d say your 84 is impressive no matter what with the vintage gear just knowing how they set up tourney play now a days. Thanks for posting you’re experience and sharing with us!
